Hello from India.

This is going to be a long post.

I purchased a used 2011 Passat b7 Highline automatic DSG here last year. It had done abt 55k kms when bought and currently it is at 65k kms. I have had quite a lot of problems with it.

Firstly, while on a long road trip the car died on me without any warnings. I did not have access to any VAG COM or any scanner for that matter as I was far away from the city in a remote area with no knowledgeable mechanics. The car used to crank and fire up but die in few seconds with no warnings on the dashboard. I managed to get hold of a mechanic from far who did whatever he knew, towed the car to his garage, got hold of one of his friends who had the launch scanner which did not show any errors either, kept the car for a day. He called me next day saying he removed the injectors and cleaned them and he’s kept the car running all night to see if it is dying but it did not. We thought it could be the fuel as India has a lot of fuel adulteration issues. On my way back the car dies on the highway again without any warning. It cranks but does not start. And sometimes it did but it died immediately a few seconds later. I didn’t know what the problem was so I got it towed to a mechanic I knew. Little did he know anything too which I figured out later.

He said my HPFP gave up along with my injectors etc. I couldn’t believe him as the car worked fine till mid highway before going dead without any warnings. But I had no option as the car wouldn’t even drive back till home. After few days of him experimenting the car started. He said he changed the HPFP and 2 of my injectors now the car starts but during hard acceleration the car goes in limp mode and he thinks it is the other 2 injectors but he didn’t have them in stock. So, after being frustrated I just took the car home and started looking for more reliable garages with proper scanners. VW wanted to charge me a bomb to replace the whole fuel system they asked me for almost 50% of what I bought the car for. I didn’t have that sort of money to pay them. In fact, I didn’t even know if the problem was true and if it’s worth paying so much for it. So, my search for a good garage began and I landed up with a garage having a VAG COM thankfully. They told me that all my 4 injectors are showing low pressure and need to be replaced. Thankfully they had a refurbished set with them. The HPFP according to them was perfectly fine. It may or may not be another one as I don’t trust the other garage anymore. A week later after 2 months of trial and error the car came back home and was back as normal.

I started looking up for VCDS tweaks for the car and came across a page http://www.ukpassats.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=89352 which said the headlight intensity can be increased via VCDS by changing a code in body control module. Before changing the code, we took a picture of the long code and what we were changing it to.

Under 09 Cent. Elect. Byte 9 we changed the digits from 1C to 11 with the help of long coding helper. We got a whole lot of errors related to headlights and DRL on the dash. Most of my electronics inside and outside the car stopped working like it should or stopped working completely. The headlight stopped working automatically, manually it wouldn’t go in high beam, the cigarette socket stopped working etc. So, I reverted back to my original code and restored everything back. Thankfully that was an easy process. Everything started working back again like it should but the light errors on the dash doesn’t seem to go. We cross checked the long code according to the pictures we clicked but its still the same. Please help as we can’t seem to figure out what can be done. The garage guy says it maybe that the Binary was changed when we changed the long code and we should have clicked a picture of all the 30 Bytes before changing anything. The electronics work as they should but there are errors on the dash which refuse to go away. Fuses etc all seem to be normal. I don’t know where to begin.

Heres an auto scan of the car. Apologies if I have made any mistake here.

You should always make and save a complete Auto-Scan from a car before doing anything to it.

But just in case you don't, VCDS does keep a log of changes made.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I had taken a picture of the long code before changing it. So, the long code has been matched and rechecked. The lights started behaving normally only after the old long code was put back. Before that all the electronics were misbehaving. The mechanic also tried swapping the BCM from another car by matching the part number but he said the same errors keep showing up on the dashboard even after BCM swap. I am not sure if this has been done but I am just going by his word. According to him there are Binary uder every Byte which also can be changed. And that may be the issue. He says we may have messed up the binary while changing the long code and we should have taken a picture of all the 30 bytes instead of just the long code. I am not sure if he is correct. He also says that I should go to VW authorised workshop and ask them to reflash the whole car.

I can try and get the log file by tomorrow if it will help. But I am pretty sure the long code is same as before.

Regards,
Abhijeet

The "Binary" is just a bit-wise representation of the selected byte. If you change it, the selected byte in the long coding changes. If you change the byte itself, then the binary changes. They are just different ways of looking at the same thing.

Sorry for the late reply. It took me a while to search for my car’s codes in the mechanic's machine.

Understood. So, the binary is just a 1 or 0 representation of the long code if I’m correct?
But then another question arises. I have reverted the long code to what it was before changing anything but still, I have errors on the dashboard whereas everything works. What could this point out to? Anybody?

abhijeetveer" Hi - I have to preface my reply by admitting from the outset that I know absolutely nothing about 7N0 platform vehicles!

However, I do have a fondness for base 16 (Hexadecimal) and base 2 (Binary) number-sets (IMHO, they are much more efficient ways for counting than the more usual decimal system) and I am strangely attracted to number patterns. Yes, I know that it's a weird obsession, but I'm in therapy and my psychologist says that I'm doing well! ;). So - it's entirely these two attributes that compels my response.

Anyhow- again with the caveat that I'm ignorant about Passat B7s - I notice that there appears to have been a shift in the Byte pattern for the records that you included in your post #5. Unfortunately, your records are missing their time stamp, but usually these type of VCDS reports are sequential - which means that the 2 x important numbers are the first "from" entry and the last "to" entry. If I re-phrase the format of these two numbers from your records and I compare them on a Byte-to-Byte basis , I find the following:

Code:
Name	last "from" entry	first "to" entry
Byte	Hex	Binary Hex	Binary
0	08	00001000	00	00000000

29	00	00000000	41	01000001
30 00000000 00000000

I also note that your auto-scan has adopted the code-string from the first "to" entry in your history records

Notice the difference in the Byte pattern - despite the fact that both code-strings are 30 Bytes in length, there appears to have been a "right-shift" between the two.

As I have said - I know nothing about what effect this might have to a Passat, but generally this ain't a good thing to do to control modules - I think!

Something to consider in your search for an answer - perhaps?

Don

I also note that your auto-scan has adopted the code-string from the first "to" entry in your history records

Notice the difference in the Byte pattern - despite the fact that both code-strings are 30 Bytes in length, there appears to have been a "right-shift" between the two.

As I have said - I know nothing about what effect this might have to a Passat, but generally this ain't a good thing to do to control modules - I think!

Something to consider in your search for an answer - perhaps?

Thank you for your reply.

I can try and get you the timestamp if its really required but the changes mentioned above were one after the other immediately. What exactly had happened was the person changed the headlight dimming by using a drop-down arrow in byte 9, which changed the long code from 1C to 11 as mentioned in the first post but after applying it, instead of changing it from 1C to 11, it was changed to something completely different as can be seen in my last post. So, we thought we probably messed it up and wanted to change it back as there were a lot of errors thrown on the MID. I noticed the shift of codes every time we changed the long code back to original, but every time the long code was changed to original it was changing to something else completely different. The person said there could be something wrong with his machine so I went to a different guy having a VCDS that is when he put the original code and the lights were restored. But the errors have stayed. I just need to get rid of the errors.

Here’s what I understood: I will have to buy a new CECM/BCM? Am I correct?

If yes then will it be a plug and play affair or will is there a way to go around it?

Regards

abhijeetveer:Without intending any offense and again from the perspective of someone (i.e.,me) sans Passat B7 expertise - I wonder if this exercise might have a problem of distinguishing between the forest and the trees!

Let's get back to basics - seems like the first question to answer is - what was the original code string for your BCM. Or, said another way: is the last "from" entry in your history records which you posted truly the factory code-string for your the hex09 module? Once you have answered this question - then (and only then) should you contemplate the correct process for winding back the Byte 9 value (I reckon).

Because I'm intrigued why applying a right-shifted code-string to a BCM hasn't rendered the car unworkable - I'd like to help with the first question. So, purely to satiate my intellectual curiosity - can you post-up a complete (i.e. unabridged, unedited, uncut, full-text) set of records from the VCDS sub-directory of the computer on which the changes were made -please?
