Hello everyone,

I recently tried to do a cruise control update on my A4 B6 tdi quattro 2002.
Thanks to plenty of information on this site, and others, I felt reasonably well prepared.
Figured I needed to upgrade my steering control module from revision F to N to support this, and duly obtained a used module 8E0 953 549 N.

As soon as this is fitted, I get some errors flagged for ABS (as expected) and also the VIN mismatch from the steering controller...

uY501Gp.gif

Proceeding to follow the VIN adaptation instructions for steering module 16 (select channel 81, enter 00111 as new value) I am now stumped, as the "new value" field is greyed out, and hitting "read" has no effect...

Avm2s9I.gif

Can anyone throw any light on this?

I actually assumed it was a faulty 8E0 953 549 N module and decided to obtain a second module. In the meantime I replaced my N module with the original F and performed G85 steering calibration, ABS recoding, and ABS/ESR system test (all required to get the ABS back functioning, and achieved all that, though not without a little frustration!).

Now I have refitted the second N module and am back in the same situation, unable to relearn the VIN as "New Value" cannot be entered.

Doubly stumped. Any ideas?

Here is the full autoscan of the car, should this be of interest...

(There are a few "permanent faults" including the engine solenoid valve, the alarm battery is dead causing central convenience issues, and the AC faults 01810 - Actuating Motor for Temperature Flap; Right (V159)
41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent
00716 - Air recirculation Flap Positioning Motor (V113)
41-00 - Blocked or No Voltage
which are presumably associated with the annoying "hunting" noises that come from the flap motors in the AC when the car sits after stopping the engine, and if anyone know how to stop this I would be very happy! All in all the car runs well and does not throw up any other spurious faults, the AC never worked since I got it 4 years ago).

That's puzzling. [Read] should produce a Stored Value and enable the New Value field.

Yes, that IS indeed puzzling. I am a relatively new user to VCDS, but have used it to tweak a few simple things in the past, and I did manage to use it to recode the ABS unit and recalibrate the steering sensor when swapping back to the F version steering control module. But I simply cannot get the VIN adaptation to work (I did attempt to do the process highlighted in the first reply to this thread above). I have tried two different revision 8E0 953 549 N modules, so I dont think its a fault on the steering controller module.

I wonder, are there any built in diagnostics I could enable or examine to see why VCDS is unable to perform this function on the module?

Thanks,
Tim

Yes, let's try the following:

[Options]
Set Debug Level to 1024
[Apply]

Now without exiting VCDS, go straight to:
[Select]
[16-Steering Wheel]
[Adaptation]
Channel 81
[Read]

Give it 30 seconds there.

Then back out of VCDS gracefully and look in the Debug sub-folder. There you should find a file named DEBUG-16.DLM. Please e-mail it to Support@Ross-Tech.com along with a link to this thread.

Hello Tim,

The team received and evaluated the files. They can see Adp channel 81 takes a while to get a response from the 16 module but the cause isn't entirely obvious.

The plan at this point is to wire a handful of those B6 modules on a bench to see if this can't be duplicated in-house. We should have an update for you next week but feel free to bump this back up if you don't hear anything by Tuesday!

Hello,

Wonder if there is any further news on this problem, or any likelihood of a solution?

As the car is rather mature (2002) could it be worth trying older software, though as I have a HEXV2 interface I guess there is a limit to how far back I can go.

If there is realistically no likelihood of a solution I may see if Audi can perform the function with their own tools. I have a long 2000 mile trip coming up soon and I either ideally would like the Cruise working, or at least the ABS restored, which would mean swapping back to my original steering control module.

If there is any way to perform further diagnostics on the problem then I would be keen to work with you to address it!

Many thanks,
Tim

Well, I have an update for you...

Visited an audi independent today who also had a HEXV2 interface and VCDS 18.9.x (didn't get to check the exact subversion).

Using his laptop, windows 7, and HEXV2 interface the VIN adaptation of the steering control module worked straight away: The NEWVALUE field was able to accept an input value in the expected manner.

I was previously attempting to run VCDS on Windows 10 pro on a fairly high end i7 laptop (Asus N580).

This leads me to suspect one of the following...

1. There can be an issue with the version of windows or laptop
2. My HEXV2 interface is defective.
3. There is a significant difference in recent subversions or firmware of the interface that could lead to the problem.

I will attempt when I get a chance to install latest software on a windows 7 or 8 laptop and check to see whether the component VIN adaptation screen is available with my interface.

If I still cannot get this function to work then I would probably like to get my HEXV2 interface replaced.

My cruise control is now up and running properly anyway: The remaining steps, ABS reset and coding, G85 calibration, ABS/ESR system test went smoothly.

Food for thought anyway.

Thanks,
Tim Knights

I've not been able to get our 8E MFSW control module to talk on the bench here. It's a shame because I have the same part numbers as you for 0x17 and 0x16. 0x17 talks and sees 0x16 on Comfort CAN, but 0x16 doesn't respond to the scan tool :-(

Hey Eric did you go through a gateway or simulated direct and or try a 100 Ohm resistor bridged on the CAN high/low to see if K line wakes up?

Well as far as my cruise control is concerned, I am sorted. But it is curious (not to mention annoying, as that is what I really got VCDS for!) I had to use another VCDS unit and computer to achieve the adaptation. As I said above, when I get a chance I will find another computer/windows version to see if I can access the adaptation field with my own VCDS HEXV2.

Knowing exactly what version he used vs. what version you used would be rather useful, no?

1. There can be an issue with the version of windows or laptop
2. My HEXV2 interface is defective.
3. There is a significant difference in recent subversions or firmware of the interface that could lead to the problem.
Process of elimination: Your interface on his laptop or vice-versa.

It's also easy enough to check firmware versions in the interfaces: [Options] -> [Test] will show 'em.

Apologies! It would indeed be good to know which version of software proved successful! I will try to get that information, though it may now be after Easter. There was some pressure of time this morning.

Meantime, I did get out another older laptop with Windows 7 and very little else installed, I then installed 18.9.1 software and checked out my own interface on the car again, trying to access the VIN adaptation function of the steering module 16. Once again I got the same result as before, IE "New Value" greyed out, so its not something as simple as my W10 laptop configuration being a source of incompatibility. (The VIN is now learnt as of this morning, but I assume the function would still normally be available).

I know the firmware on my HEXV2 is the latest, I had updated it just a couple of weeks ago through the application.
Details:

Interface: H11-005081
CB: 0.4437
Firmware: 0251

Is it possible to download an older version of the application than 18.9.1 to test that out?

Yes, that's the latest Release. But not the latest Beta. ;)

However, it strikes me as doubtful that the shop you visited was using Beta firmware. Can you PM me their name so I can look them up?

That's certainly possible, but trying random older versions would be rather tedious. Let's find out what the shop had.

I'm having the same issue with [Read] not loading a Stored Value and not being able to enter a New Value. My autoscan is below. Can I share any other information to help debug?
Let's start with the basics:
Go to Options, put 1024 in the field labeled 'Debug Level', then click [Apply].
Without exiting VCDS, try to read the channel in your steering wheel module.
Exit the module (and VCDS) gracefully.
Go to your Debug sub-folder and look for the file named DEBUG16.DLM.
Send it to Support@Ross-Tech.com along with a link to this thread.

Thanks. I sent the DEBUG16.DLM file, but I wanted to let you know that I was eventually able to do the VIN adaptation. I opened Measuring Blocks for the steering wheel and noticed that it was alternating between showing the readings successfully and displaying "Data for Group 001 Not Available" (screenshots below). Thinking that there was some intermittent problem, maybe with communications getting stuck, I went back to Adaptation and just clicked Read repeatedly until it worked. I think it took something like 6-8 tries before a Stored value appeared. After entering 00111 as the New value, I needed to click Test several times before it was accepted and the Save button enabled. I'm happy to assist with debugging if you'd like, but I'm no longer stuck :)

I looked at the debug and saw that it takes the module too long to come back for VCDS to handle it properly, which matches your description. I'm guessing at some point you get lucky and the module isn't too busy to reply within 2 seconds (which is an eternity in car diagnostics). We've been aware of this issue, but it's not something Shaun and I can tackle without having it on-site. My various attempts at wiring 8E modules on the bench, and our various attempts at getting an 8E that exhibits this problem locally have been unsuccessful so far. Let us know if you ever make it up to the Philly area ;)
