Hi Uwe,

It's KW-1281

Is this reason why I'm not able to do the replacement instrument cluster SKC adaption too?

Now I'm not even able to use the original instrument cluster now in order to keep the car running.

You can remarry the keys in custody to that cluster with VCDS in KW1281 & because the lock bit is set to that cluster!

Would you like me to default that cluster for you with proper documentation & so you can marry a key and do an 050 swap or have me do a real data transfer?

Hi Jack,

I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer me at this point.

Can you tell me what's involved so I can marry a key and do the 050 swap.

And how could you do a real data transfer?

And could you do a real data transfer?

That's what I do......with all components submitted and credentials.

I will need the engine ECU, all keys and the clusters for transfer!

You could also just send me the cluster with proof of purchase to default/credentials and I could leave blank as if bought from a dealer or marry a transponder to it or leave in programming mode awaiting keys.

Lots of options

Now login to yours and remarry a key or keys by setting the key count as per the RTFB.

0x17-11-SKC
0x17-10-00
0x17-21-00 DCY + 0x17-11 for dropped session 0x17-10-21-KEY count flip keys per DCY until keys are all done.

Hi Jack,

All that above highlighted in bold sounds very expensive.

My wife already wants to kill me since she was dead set on me buying this car in the first place. Ive already had to hear her tell me multiple times that "I told you so".

If I can't get this all sorted out in a very reasonable cost factor then I'm afraid that I will have to let the car go much cheaper than what I paid for it and hang my head in shame while cutting my losses. Of course my wife is never going to let me forget about this because she wanted me to get a cheap Toyota Camry.

Okay, now that I got that all out what does all this below mean? Are those specific fields that I need to plug in to the VCDS software somewhere in order to do the re-matching of my primary key. I'm sorry if I'm a bit slow with this since I'm not well versed in this Audi Vw software stuff.

0x17-11-SKC
0x17-10-00
0x17-21-00 DCY + 0x17-11 for dropped session 0x17-10-21-KEY count flip keys per DCY until keys are all done.

Okay talk to me what you call a good deal?

You call it......

And beware and forewarned, at any point if you lie to me, you will regret it, so don't!

OMG Jack, that American Dad video where Stan is afraid that Francine is going to him "I told you so" had me ROFLOL...

A good deal is?

That is going to be where I get this SKC Cluster SNAFU all sorted out without a lot more money being spent going forward, so my wife won't GRIPE anymore that ----> "I told you so" ...:banghead:

Could I follow these steps in the link here ----> http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Immobilizer_III_Key_Matching_(Cluster)
Even though I wasn't able to do the "Immobilizer III Immobilizer Swapping (Instrument Cluster)" successfully?

.........Indeed!

Hi Jack,

I'm going to try the key adaption in VCDS a little while. Could you please explain in simple terms what "DCY" means before I attempt to re-marry my original key back to my original instrument cluster.

I want to thank you Jack and Uwe.

I got the car running again. I just used the original cluster and key and did the steps in VCDS to adapt the OEM key and cluster again.

I'm going to attempt to adapt the new cluster one more time since the same problems exist with the old cluster.

One quick question I noticed that coding is different between the two clusters.

Could someone point in the right direction in coding (how to) the new cluster to the old cluster before I try to adapt the new.

If I've got it all straight, this is the replacement cluster:
Code:
Address 17: Instruments Labels: 8E0-920-9xx-8E2.LBL
   Controller: 8E0 920 950 H
   Component: KOMBI+WEGFAHRS. RB4 D26
   Coding: 03200
   Shop #: WSC 00000
   VCID: 2E2FCA7AF90F
   WAUVC68E92A245311 AUZ6Z0B0021643

While this is the original:
Code:
Address 17: Instruments Labels: 8E0-920-9xx-8E2.LBL
   Controller: 8E0 920 980 KX
   Component: KOMBI+WEGFAHRS. RB4 D30
   Coding: 00201
   Shop #: WSC 00001
   VCID: 8C6BE0F2AF53
   WAULT68E52A099660 AUZ6Z0A0208491

Coding chart from the label file:

C00,Instrument Cluster (J285) Coding
C01,??xxx: Options
C02,+00 = 1st Distance Impulse Number (Standard - Europe/USA/Rest of World)
C03,+01 = All-Wheel-Drive/Quattro (smaller Fuel Tank Volume)
C04,+02 = Seatbelt Warning (North American Region OLD - < CW 44/2004)
C05,+04 = 3rd Distance Impulse Number (Rental Cars)
C06,+08 = 2nd Distance Impulse Number (Australia)
C07,xx?xx: Country
C08,0 = Germany (D)
C09,1 = Rest of World (RoW)
C10,2 = United States of America (US)
C11,3 = Canada (CAN)
C12,4 = Great Britain (GB)
C13,5 = Japan (JP)
C14,6 = Saudi Arabia
C15,7 = Australia (AUS)
C16,xxx?x: Seatbelt Warning
C17,0 = Seatbelt Warning inactive (or North American Region OLD - < CW 44/2004)
C18,3 = Seatbelt Warning active (North American Region NEW - CW 45/2004 >)
C19,xxxx?: Variant
C20,0 = Variant 1
C21,1 = Variant 2 (Standard)
C22,2 = Variant 3

So the difference is that the replacement has AWD and Seatbelt warning option bits on, plus "Variant 1" while the original has "Variant 2".

But I really don't think any of this is at all related to immobilizer functionality.

Now when doing an Immo-3 parts swap, there are three components: The keys, the cluster, and the ECU that all have to be matched to each other to have a working car. Whenever you try to match a new one (any of these three), the other two must already match, and it sounds like on your previous attempts, the keys and the ECU had somehow lost their matching? I'm speculating here because I think you said the car wouldn't start and run even with the original cluster installed?

If original and replacement clusters have the same part numbers, then just copy all coding from original and type in the replacement. It is suggested to go through adaptation channels too, as some options are switched on/off by adaptation, not by coding.
BTW it is possible, that this is the reason why You was not able to adapt replacement cluster. You should code cluster BEFORE adapting it to ECU/immo system.

Edit: Uwe was faster :)
I didn't look at label file like Uwe did. And there are no engine type in coding  Then what I wrote above is not true...

Hi Uwe,

My car is an A4 Quattro and if I understand you correctly the original cluster is not coded for the AWD Quattro, but the replacement one is?

Also I'm posting another controller "auto scan" below with the car running for about 15 minutes with the original cluster.

I keep seeing this reference "Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285) 49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent" for most of the fault codes.

Would you be inclined to agree that the original cluster is SNAFU?

What are block values of each cluster?
0x17-08-002?
0x17-08-081?

Please bifurcate and identify each cluster log for full disclosure!

Will do Jack.

But since we have company arriving shortly I won't be able to do it at the moment, but perhaps a little later this evening.

My wife is here and she said "thank you" for saving my behind last night with your sage advice. Also she's starting to warm up to me a just little bit more regarding this Audi.

It was set to 0 miles with the use of the same software that was able to retrieve the SKC.
