Seat Leon high emissions - no codes

Partners 2011 Seat Leon 1.4 FR failed mot on emissions. Mileage 123000.
CO should be < 0.20% actual is 6.24%
HC should be <200 ppm actual is 410
Lambda 0.97 - 1.03 is actually 0.825

But no EML is showing and a scan shows up no fault codes. The only anomoly is the detail below

Im guessing the car was code cleared before purchase last year (with 12 months MOT) it starts and runs/drives sweetly doesnt seem heavy on fuel, I cant find any air leaks or similar issues.

The only pass on the emissions test was the engine speed!!

Any inspiration would be most welcome.

6.24% CO is nuts! I've had old VW's with mechanical (CIS) fuel injection, and we used to set them up to run at ~0.75%.

Please post an Auto-Scan so people can see exactly what ECU this car has.

The next step depends on your abilities and tools. Before you worry about a reflash of the ECU back to standard, you need to determine if there is any cat core left, that means taking it down and looking. I haven't checked but I suspect you have a "manicat" the cat is part of the exhaust manifold and a secondary cat in the exhaust pipe. genuine replacements are expensive but aftermarket ones will give you more problems in a little while.
Do you have any recourse to the seller? A talk to local Trading Standards might be worthwhile as would a chat with the DVLA.

I was dreading it being that. The toolkit is available - until recently I worked for a local breakers yard, although I will miss having a lift to work with :rolleyes:

I think if the cat has been decored (which we didnt used to see much of) I will be having conversations with the DVSA about the test station that provided the new MOT with the car and Trading Standards about the Garage. Im sure they will say that after all this time there isn much they can do about this car, but they might keep an eye on the busiesses concerend for the future. Later this week I expect to make the time to have a poke around ... I'll report back when Ive got my hands dirty.

OK Finally managed to get under it today, after some struggles with the nuts where the flexy joins the Cat I was able to see inside, the Cat appears intact. Both Lambdas are definitely plugged in, there are no obvious signs of anything amiss, and started it for the first time in 14 days no problem.

Still no EML.. and I know it works, it shows up when you switch on.

Im starting to think this could be heading dealerwards... with the associated huge bill.

I suggest to start with ECU flashing to standard and up to date FW. The best way is to do it at dealer. Then drive a couple of days and post scan here.
There definitely something is wrong with this ECU. CO 6.24, such count of failed readiness bits and no DTC's...
One more quick idea - check area behind OBD connector is there something connected to CAN lines that shouldn't be there. Just from my experience - once I had BMW in for diagnostics with lot of complaints and 0 DTC's. And I found a device on CAN that broadcasts "clear all faults" command each minute.

No progress.

Yes this is an old thread, the car has been laid up since the epic MOT fail due to us having bigger issues - refurbing a house to live in which had to take total priority over a second car. Im back to that car now - while we have decent weather and a mid year MOT seems a better idea - hate working on cars in winter. (Also - my Octy being in for body repairs after getting bumper slammed by a little old lady in a Hyundai has reminded me that we really need the second car available) So I hope that you guys didnt think I was being ignorant by not reporting progress... it was just that nothing happened.

So later today im going to have a poke round under the dash and make sure there is no "foreign" wiring in place, then maybe put in a call to the local SEAT dealer. If they want the whole car for an ECU flash then Ill have to get it on cover and drive it over. Thats the frustrating thing... it runs like a watch and is fun to drive, plenty of poke for a 1.4.

I'll rescan it today and see if anything changed while its been laid up... its been run from time to time moving it in and out of the garage, but thats it. of course if anyone has suggestions for a reflash... but not BBA... used them once and had no end of problems.
