Hi all,

Very new to VCDS use. I purchased last week and started playing with it on my two TDI's. I have some questions regarding my auto scans on my 98 and 02 Jetta's

Here is the 02 scan:

My question is: the 98's scan only shows one scan block. In the second line of this scan it shows 9 blocks. Does this mean for this year there are 9 options, of which I only have one. Or did I do something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help.

BTW--my apologies for posting the scan results incorrectly.

Welcome! Could go either way. You have some repeated issues in your '02 scan...

Code:
No Faults Found
or DTCs not supported by controller
  or a communication error occurred
... that indicates VCDS may be struggling with communication or timing issues. What sort of interface did you buy, and what kind of PC are you running it on? Some of this stuff is very timing-sensitive and can struggle on very old laptops (or laptops with too much junk running).

On the other hand...
Code:
Chassis Type: 1H - VW Golf/Vento III (1992 > 1999)
Scan: 01 02 03 08 12 15 25 41 56

Edit: Actually, what's going on is you picked the wrong chassis type. Use the 9M chassis type just like you did for the '02. There's stuff in there it should have found already, but there's a number of things it didn't even try because of that chassis type selection.

I'm running on a macbook pro, using VMware. the cable is a K11-usb

So I can use the 9M chassis type on the 98?

Well, that solves that. Running VCDS under VMware isn't supported, because you run into exactly this sort of problem. The communications protocol with the car is very, very sensitive to timing, and VMware messes with that. If you can dual-boot into Windows, that will generally work.

So I can use the 9M chassis type on the 98?
Yes. The 9M chassis covers model-year 1998 onward through 2005 in the US, and further elsewhere as the City Jetta or similar.

Edit: Checked based on Uwe's comment below, 1998 is a Mk3 and will have less diagnostic-capable stuff. Using the 9M chassis designation won't hurt anything, but it won't get back any additional results either. Not sure why VCDS shows it 1998 and forward, split should be in 1999... perhaps Mk4 was available overseas first?

That would explain it. ;)

You can, but it would be a pointless waste of time. The only things in a US Mk.3 chassis that "talk" are:
01-Engine
02-Auto-Trans (if equipped)
03-ABS brakes (if equipped)
15-Airbags
56-Radio (only ~98.5 and newer, and only if it's stock and turned on)

Now my guess is that Jetta doesn't have an Auto Trans or ABS. So the only thing that's conspicuously absent on that car is your Airbag module. Looking for other modules that don't exist or simply aren't diagnostic-capable in that car would be an exercise in futility. Installing Boot Camp and booting Windows natively, or borrowing a PC that runs Windows natively might not be.

Yeah--it's a basic car, nothing fancy. I only wanted it for the engine diagnostics anyway. I do have air bags, so curious why it didn't recognize that module.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I was just being lazy, already had VMware installed. I'll install XP in bootcamp and run it natively. Will reinstalling VCDS make me run through the registration process again?

Nope. For KII-USB, the physical interface is the license. You can run the VCDS desktop software on whatever PC you like.

Good morning gents'

Another NUB question if you don't mind. Someone has offered to give me a net-book. Instead of purchasing new windows software, free is always better. Any problems running the software one it? It has the proper requirements and is running XP.

Thanks for you help.

Some of the older netbooks with single-core Atom CPUs are starting to get a bit marginal on CPU power for current versions of VCDS.

Spiderman,

I also have a MacBook. What I have done, and it works well is install Boot Camp and then Windows 7. This allows the software direct access to the USB interface rather than having to depend on the VMWare or VirtualBox software to transfer it, and most of the information doesn't transfer fast enough through a virtual environment.
