    Re-fit a lockable rear diff to my 2008 T5 4motion

    Hi.

I bought a second hand T5 multivan 4motion from 2008 a year ago. I wanted it with rear diff lock, but to my surprise the day I was to lock the diff, it did not work, and I found out the rear diff had been replaced by a non-lockable rear diff.

So I plan to re-fit an original lockable rear diff. This work could be like a retrofit, maybe, but I suspect it should be way easier since I know my van will easily accept the modifications as it accepted them when she went out of the factory.

So I am posting here a AWD scan and a complete autoscan. In the AWD section, I'd appreciate if someone with a 4motion from 2008 with rear diff lock can compare the codes below against theirs, and give me some clues on what I should be doing / considering / taking care of before starting the job --- even before buying a lockable differential.

While I wait, I'd also appreciate a little help in interpreting the AWD section -- Since I could not find a "Autoscan interpretation guide" section or similar:

    What is "Shop #" ??
    What is "WSC" ??
    What is "VCID" ??
What are the essential codes I should be looking at? The "Coding" section? Is it really just these few codes, or should I improve this scan with some deeper scan?

    Thanks from a newbie!

"Shop #" consists of WSC (Work Shop Code), Importer number, and Equipment Number. This stuff is explained on a bit more than half-way down the following page of the VCDS product manual:
    http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/option_screen.php

Our FAQ entry 2.9 also has some discussion of it:
    http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_2.php#2.9

VCID is is something proprietary to VCDS; it contains VCDS version info, control module protocol info, and so on.

The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

I am having no feedback on this. Le me try again see if I can wake this thread up...

I have a T5 4-motion from 2008. It is originally with diff lock (differential lock). However, the previous owner changed the diff to a non lockable one. So now I have no diff lock. However, I have all the valves and the dash button and the vacuum tubes and everything needed to re-fit a diff-lock unit.

I wish to have the diff lock back in. My mechanic tried 3 units already, and says he's having trouble with the ECU rejecting them. I do not trust my mechanic a lot (he could not replace a shaft boot properly last week) and am trying to take this job in my own hands.

I am ebaying for a rear differential with diff lock. I can find some things in the 500 euro range, which I think it's pretty fair. I found one diff from 2006 with diff lock. The downside, it comes with no Haldex unit.

So my intention is to use the mechanical gearings part, which has the diff lock, and fit my working haldex into it. Since my ECU is really communicating with my Haldex, I think I should be able to complete the job this way without communication issues.

The job would be: 1) Take my working haldex out of my non-lockable diff, 2) put it in the new ebay lockable diff, 3) put the whole thing under my van.

Any wise opinions for / against this approach??

Hey I still use it and FYI it doesn't need a net connection or PC.

Thanks Jack for this input. I did not know what PR codes were until now!

I am posting this for reference. Also if anyone is willing to clarify some doubts I will be of course thankful!

The diff lock option has PR code 1Y4. This involves the differential housing and parts, including all the commands for the lock, and the signals from the log, which come from 3 reed switches located at the lock lever.

The Haldex unit, however, is common to both lockable and non-lockable versions.

I do not see any other difference in parts. Even across the years of production, all parts of the differential itself (which differ on the last letter of the OEM code depending on year) seem to be compatible. The Haldex however seems to have changed sometime in 2007, so beware of this part code. I am keeping my Haldex so no problem here.

Regarding ECUs and codes, the reed switches in the diff lock mechanism communicate with the AWD computer which is located in the Haldex.

Additionally, and to allow for engaging the diff lock, the system first reads vehicle wheel speeds from the ABS computer. It seems to only read this info, so I assume the ABS computer will need no recoding after re-fitting the diff lock.

So the situation seems as follows:

    - If I keep the Haldex I currently have, I should have no mechanical problems in assembling it into a lockable differential.

    - If I re-fit the lockable differential, I may have to see whether I have to recode the AWD computer or not to account for the info read from the reed switches. Actually here I do not know: how can I know what is necessary?

    - It does not seem I have to take care of codings in the ABS computer.

The current code of the AWD computer in the Haldex I have is:

    Code:
    Address 22: AWD Labels: None
       Part No: 7H0 907 554 F
       Component: HALDEX 4Motion 2110
       Coding: 0000002
       Shop #: WSC 49856 001 1048576
       VCID: 33331D04772445EF53F-5160
    2 Faults Found:
    00003 - Control Module
                014 - Defective - Intermittent
02248 - Valve for Controlling Clutch Operating Angle (N373)
                014 - Defective - Intermittent
Most of the parts in my van have #Shop code WSC 02756. So my Haldex seems to be not the original, or perhaps it has been recoded at #Shop 49856. How to know which shop is this? I might be interested in contacting them.

    Thanks

    Joan
