Hello,
Trying to adapt egr and throttle but appear as not running. Any idea? In the individual tests can be heard that they do operate. When looking into the throttle measurements, they do not change when acceleration pedal is pressed, so i am really getting confused whether there is a problem. Also i do not have access to the measuring blocks in the engine menu, is this expected for CAYC engines ? This is for skoda octavia 2010 tdi cr 1.6L.

Well, it's a diesel, and the primary purpose of the "throttle" is to restrict airflow when it can (and should) be replaced with recirculated exhaust gasses on order to limit the production of NOx that would occur in a diesel that's running the traditional way, purely on un-throttled air. That means there is no real correlation between the motion of your foot on the accelerator and the position of the throttle itself.

Also i do not have access to the measuring blocks in the engine menu, is this expected for CAYC engines ?
Yes. We can see from your screen-shots that this ECU uses the UDS protocol, which simply doesn't support the old-school Measuring Blocks.

In an case it would be appreciated if you would post an Auto-Scan so people can see exactly what ASAM data your ECU is calling for and what (if any) faults are present.

Thank you for your reply, just did the auto scan. I am asking all these questions coz changed the throttle and EGR of the car and it got rough on low rpm and hesitates on acceleration. The egr is a new Chinese generic part, I wonder whether this could be a problem. The throttle is a second hand oem part. Anyway, the thing is i want to remove this unknown as part of the mystery, but cannot execute calibration. Recently ECU entered in a safe mode showing an injector fault when did a hard acceleration, but when cleaned and swapped to the one on the next cylinder to confirm if it was actual injector, looming or controller - the fault never appeared again... Still do not really want to buy an injector if not necessary

Die you at least put the swapped injectors back where they belong? You do know that each injector is individually coded, right? If they are still in the wrong place, then the ECU will be making incorrect assumptions about two of them. Moreover, it is not a good idea to "fix" this by reversing the coding of the injectors because that will make the ECU think you have installed brand-new injectors and and throw away the ~70,000 miles worth of wear compensation it should be using.

First, thank you so much for your replies.

Well... you are probably right. The seller, I bought it from, had sold that particular EGR in large quantities as it fits various VW engines, and there was not any negative feedback really. Apart from the obvious reason -cost, I find quite annoying that the original part worn out at such low mileage. You know I got mk4 golf that has its own original EGR and it's 140k miles and has no issues.
I took off the EGR from the Skoda, just to clean it up, but noticed a small metal wheel engaging the electromechanical valve control – pretty worn. Not a mechanical engineer but come one, that thing does not have a simple bearing to make it last longer. It spins on a metal rod. I really dislike the idea of investing money in expensive part which engineering wise is crap.

Yes, I coded both injectors as per their new placement.

Right, I did not know that. I would not do it otherwise. To determine the root of the problem in this case then I would have sent the injector for a performance test instead. By the way, how long does it take for the ECU to “learn” about the injector’s performance?

Not yet, but the car has not been driven much at all. Do not want cause further damage. In case I already swapped the injectors and updated the addresses, does it make any difference to put them back as originally placed ?

After all, after some googling I cannot find any explanation about this “adaptation not running ” statement. Lets say the Chinese part is crap, but the throttle is ok. So trouble is that if I do not know whether adaptation is needed, it is very difficult to solve this engine performance problem.

I cannot disagree with that.

I don't know. It's possible that this isn't a "learning" effect, but rather a compensation for presumed wear (i.e. the amount of fuel that the ECU thinks has gone through the injector), but I am not sure.

In that case, probably not.

Is it possible you have missed some requisite condition for it? I don't really know what it could be, but it's a possibility to consider.

CRAP EGR is a problem. I don't remember what parameter exactly, but some EGR position measurement value was not plausible. It does not throw fault code immediately but prevents successful adaptation.

Uwe, MartinsX,
Thanks for that.

Hm, I really do not know... I pretty much went through all possible options in the engine module. But I am not confident whether did the right thing. There was a option to clean all learned values, but I guess it might throw the car completely out of balance.
There was an auto test which completed on various rpms and in overall was for at least 10-15min. And then I passed one of the tests for the EGR, but it was not much improvement after all.

Tomorrow I am bring the skoda to a mechanic (a second one),if he cannot find the problem I will just buy OEM EGR. Changing that part is pain in the butt without a car lift..
I think my neighbours started thinking I am mad as I have already spent plenty time under the car. Why on earth would you place EGR valve behind the engine on these TDI engine models… have not got a clue

Hello,
Just a quick update on this. Before changing EGR went to an VW garage to give me assurance whether it is the root of the problem. So they insisted the car needs a new set of injectors. Which is quite pricey repair. Anyway, decided to try with 2 injectors as I already mess around with cyl 3 and 4. Got them replaced. Actually it got worse afterwards, i sounded like a tractor. Bit my tongue and bought another two as it was suggested. The car started significantly better, and it was drivable again. There was still a bit of hesitation but that was nearly disappearing when the car was warm. Then decided to finally check with another approved garage.
On car pick up they said a small component has failed 3C0 129 363. I did not pay to much attention at first to the summary. I though it is an electrical component. Also they said, they updated the SW.
when i was leaving the garage the car stalled hardly and a few miles down the road come up with an engine light.
I am FURIOUS, I do not know what they have done but now the diagnostic comes up with an MAF sensor error, P0101. Never had this problem before. On the phone, they said only did scanning and came up with error of the above mentioned component. That part they said is faulty -does not exist on this car. At least i do not see it anywhere in the specs. Bought it just in case coz it is cheap.
Is it possible updating the engine SW to throw the car in such chaos, or they deliberately touched something to make me come back again. Is there a way to set/offset manually the MAF sensor?
I really do not want to call them back again, will not find out what was done anyway
Seriously pissed off

On what basis did they conclude that? With only 70,000 miles?

Is it possible updating the engine SW to throw the car in such chaos
Please post a fresh scan so people can see what changed in the engine SW.

Pfff I was not given the reason behind it, I just told them that had an encounter with an injector fault. They might wanted to make easy money... I do not know. Anyway, I did it on my own and replaced them with OEM new parts and as result the car got notably better compared to before i touched the injectors...

I got the autoscan, it looks TERRIBLE, as if the ECU got fried or something... I do not understand everything, but did they update the SW?
What is this big mess? The scan i posted before is nothing like this...

I got the autoscan, it looks TERRIBLE, as if the ECU got fried or something...
I do not understand everything, but did they update the SW?
What is this big mess? The scan i posted before is nothing like this...

Yes, they did.

Original scan:
Code:
Address 01: Engine (J623-CAYC) Labels:. 03L-906-023-CAY.clb

New Scan:
Code:
Address 01: Engine (J623-CAYC) Labels:. 03L-906-023-CAY.clb

Now as for the mess: The ECU itself has no faults. But a bunch of other modules do, including "No Communications with ECU" sort of faults. That's essentially normal after an ECU update because the ECU can't do its normal job of communicating while it's being updated.

What amazes me is that some shops will let a car out the door with all those faults in it. If they have a tool than can update the ECU, they certainly have a tool that can clear the feckin' fault codes that a flash update inevitably causes.

{Apologies for the rant.}

Of course, you also have a tool that can clear fault codes, so please use it and do so.

Then see what comes back.

Thank you very much sir!

The car came back to what it was. That fault with the MAF sensor remained though. But it lighted up after driving like 20 miles.
Logically, I could consider that the accepted impedance range of the sensor might have been reevaluated and readjusted in the newer SW.
So if in the older SW version the range was wider, then it simply it has not been caught.
Question now, whether this is really a sensor, harness, or other component/sensor improper work.
The thing i did not mentioned the whole time is, also i got a notably rattling dual mass flywheel/ clutch. I will do the work it next month. Wonder if that bringing unstable operation to the engine and causing the MAF sensor error. I suppose, the autoscan gives a hint of the sensor performance. But how do i know the expected range without having a spec ?

Thanks again

Btw, the two garages were convinced that the generic EGR is ok, but who knows for sure... It is still in my suspect list.
I think, i may try with a second hand OEM MAF, they are not expensive.
After all this ordeal with "approved" garages it seems cheaper using the inefficient "trial and error" method to get a problem sorted

Logically, I could consider that the accepted impedance range of the sensor might have been reevaluated and readjusted in the newer SW.
Interestingly enough, there is a Basic Setting:
IDE00887 -- Test of the plausibility of the air mass meter
However, I do not have any instructions or procedure for it.

But how do i know the expected range without having a spec ?
The ECU itself supplies a spec dynamically in this Measuring Value:
IDE00350-ENG99082 -- Air mass: specified value -- (mg/stroke)

You may wish to compare (log) it along with the actual measured value and look for discrepancies.
IDE03949-ENG102262 -- Air mass: actual value -- (mg/stroke)

Keep in mind however that a discrepancy could be caused by issues other than a malfunctioning MAF, for example a misbehaving EGR could cause more or less air in than the ECU is expecting.

Are there any CAYC engines that have no EGR issues in the determined useful life by design?

If this car was here in the USA it indeed would be under warranty for MAF or EGR , have you checked with your government to see if yours is too by reading the regions regulations?

Yeah, I saw those two and there was a discrepancy. Purchased a cheap second hand MAF just to see if there is any difference. If that really is the problem, which i doubt, then will buy a new one OEM.

Yes exactly, but first i want to fix the clutch before doing anything else.
Actually, first time yesterday, apart from the usual now MAF error it appeared an implacable signal error from EGR. That is after this SW update. I did some driving before that and there was not any issue.

This particular EGR is used in vast number of vehicles with VW engines. I have read read some feedback from other people. So generally, the design is complex and at the same time not that robust. In my opinion, one of the distinguishable mechanical design imperfections is a small metal wheel aiding the electromechanical valve that gets easily worn. Which actually can be easily eliminated. Then, the metal flap directing the airflow gets easily blocked etc. I believe it is all made intentional, as it is a very costly repair that most people would not be able to do it on their own. Simply, it requires reasonable amount of time and various tools to replace.

It is a 9 years old car, i do not think any warranty applies... Anyway I picked it as a project so there are history unknowns... I think just too many problems for the mileage . It was probably tortured

Solved!

I have to acknowledge despite that the last garage, I visited, forgot to reset the ECU after the SW update they were most accurate.
It turned out that the cheap plastic bit that they said was missing it is from the air intake, and part of the airbox. I have never thought that there is a missing part despite opening and cleaning/inspecting the airbox several times. See the airbox has a long exit pipe before attaching to the MAF. That missing part narrows slightly the airflow and ends with a snow screen in front of the MAF. At first I was quite skeptical coz the plastic bit is actually large but it glides in tightly within the airbox.

2ro6cmw.jpg

So as a result:

EGR fault cleared and have not reoccurred
MAF fault cleared and have not reoccurred
Hesitation further reduced to minimum

Drove for a bit then thought about that second hand MAF, and decided to give it ago as already put the money for it.
Then BAAM! Now car drives as it should.
After all the 70£ generic EGR seem to be doing its job. But really, if I need to do another EGR job in future I would not get a generic part as I do not know how to do a proper performance check on that part and also at the end of the day it requires a great effort to change and therefore it is not worth the risk.

Thanks for all comments
