Fault codes (MK.5 Steering)

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing a few fault codes on my car 2008 VW Golf R32. I'll give a bit of background first.

About two months ago I had the steering rack replaced with a new one by a VW dealer.

Then about 3 weeks ago, I installed the MK6 reverse camera and installed a new Bluetooth unit and the MDI kit and disconnected the battery to do the installation & wiring/fuse. Upon reconnecting the battery, all the warning lights were lit up and did not go out. I freaked out, did a scan and saw all these error codes. I started doing research and apparently its normal for this to happen when disconnecting the battery and a simple drive would eliminate them. The steering felt quite heavy but then went back to normal as soon as the lights went out. I haven't had any issues while driving it.

Today I thought I'd give it a scan while I was activating voice control for the bluetooth unit. I'm getting the below:

Would this be because of the new steering rack, or have I fried the power steering module while reconnecting the battery? The steering feels fine.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'll try resetting it again tonight.

If there was a problem with the power steering control module, would it appear in the Steering Assist (Address 44) or Cent. Elect. (Address 09)? Because I'm not getting any fault codes there.

I took the car for a quick drive and cleared the fault, but it came back straight away.

I guess I have to take it back to the dealership.

Unless anyone else has any ideas.

You could get a repair manual and read the WD.

Use it to trace the CAN High/Low twisted pair to the gateway.

Verify relays for supply and ground connections to the module.

Observe advanced blocks for Module COM in VCDS...........

Didn't the steering rack have some sort of coding for determining ABS type?

It would be best if you posted a complete auto-scan when not knowing what you are doing........... for seeing such conflicts that others might see within the scan.

Yeah, there is an adaption for j500 when replacing the steering rack, but I think this may also have ha something to do with the switchover from gen2 to gen3 steering racks!

Might be a connectivity issue or improperly coded gateway.

If it makes any difference, I quickly connected to the CAN gateway and into the Measuring Blocks, earlier. I found J500 in one of the groups and it did have Steering 1 in green. I'll post the log later.

Its booked with the dealership who did the work on the steering rack for next Tuesday.

Yup In gateway but is it in ABS............?

Hello,
if you've changed the steering, there is no Kl reported. Adress 44 idicated 0, like Component: EPS_ZFLS Kl.0 1301.
This must be done by the dealerschip, online.
Address 19: CAN Gateway, Incorrectly Coded, Byte 8 > that's for Skoda? and Byte 6 Bit 4, 2E Media Player 3 is missing

I will go through the ABS when I go home. Is there a way to find out which group J500 is in? If not, then I will go through it one by one.

If you mean going into Address 03 - ABS and clearing the fault code, then yes. But it re-appears straightaway.

Yes but did you check advanced measuring blocks for COM with steering in ABS controller.

Maybe a bad wire or corrosion........bent pins at steering module or ABS unit......must verify before condemning modules.

I wonder if ABS is correct part # or coded correctly .......this must also be investigated in addition to steering module.

If it was a bad wire or corrosion, would the fault not appear under the CAN Gateway and Steering Assist modules? Or the steering warning light on the dash?

The current ABS module part number is the same as the old scan I performed. I'm assuming its still the original module.

Just ran the advanced measuring blocks on Address 3 - ABS. I cannot see J500. The closest thing I can see is this:
