Hi,
My 2000 Eurovan shot me with some misfire codes the day after I had a new water pump installed. Van is about to hit 50,000 miles on the odometer. Prior to these codes it's been throwing a 1582 code off and on. Started replacing the cloth cover vacuum lines to try and cure that code, in addition to cleaning the throttle valve assembly, but the CEL was still on. I'd appreciate any thoughts/input on what direction to head with this.

Code:

Control Module Part Number: 021 906 259 P
  Component and/or Version: MOTRONIC M5.9 AT V03
           Software Coding: 00001
            Work Shop Code: WSC 000000
                      VCID: 2237C814BDD7
8 Faults Found:
17622 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 2 (N31): Short to Plus
        P1214 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
        P0300 - 35-00 - -
16686 - Cylinder 2: Misfire Detected
        P0302 - 35-00 - -
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
        P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16686 - Cylinder 2: Misfire Detected
        P0302 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17623 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 3 (N32): Short to Plus
        P1215 - 35-00 - -
16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected
        P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected
        P0303 - 35-00 - -

I should add that before the misfires there were no drive-ability issues, van idled and ran great, even with the 1582 code.

I think I would focus on the fuel injector fault codes. Got wiring diagrams?

It would be cool if you could post the section showing the fuel injectors. I'm a bit puzzled that the faults are "Short to Plus".

As soon as I can figure them out I will certainly post it, as well in all the endeavors necessary to resolve this.

OK, so on page 72/3, we have fuel injectors 1 to 6. One side of each is connected to the ECU and the other side of each is connected to the G3 "Plus connection in wiring harness. That means the are low-side switched, i.e. the ECU turns the injectors on by providing a path to ground on its side, and it turns them off by removing that path to ground. That's very common, since it's generally easier for DC electronics to switch stuff to GND than it is to switch stuff to Plus.

However, it's pretty unsual to see "Short to Plus" fault codes in such arrangements. It's possible you have a couple of failing fuel injectors with intermittent internal shorts in their coils, but I doubt this; it strikes me as unlikely to happen to two of them at the same time.

Since this started when you were messing with vacuum lines and such, I suggest retracing those steps, especially if they were anywhere near the wiring between the injectors and the ECU.

Thank you Uwe, your input is very much appreciated. I will post the outcome when it all gets squared away.

Just to update: A new ignition coil cleared up the misfiring issues. But now the 1582 code is back, so back to the drawing board on that one.

Correct, P1582 Idle Adaptation. It came back to haunt me, for some reason it went away when the misfires occurred. I've been plagued with this code for years now, but just ignored it because the van ran great. CEL would be off for months and then come back. Now it's overdue for inspection.
