Hello,
just wired another test subject with random Audi A6 C6 engine ECU (CAN) + Audi A6 C5 central locks (K2).
Now I can't open basic settings/output tests because it asks to register "wrong VIN number" while I'm in A6 C5 Central locks if I opened engine ECU in the same vcds session before Central locks. Is it intended? Maybe before vin popup there could be a "IF" is module connected through CAN or K.

Obviously, if I disconnect engine ECU, it doesn't offer VIN registration while in Central locks or not open engine ecu in the same session.
Yes, I know, not standart car. :) Just wanted to check is this cable working.

Sounds like it's working as designed. The idea is not whether it's CAN or K, it's whether the car knows its VIN. You could even get a popup on a completely K-line car once VCDS has figured out its VIN through the engine or cluster.

Thanks for clarifying, I thought it's for every control module individually.
Got one K-line engine ECU with VIN number in Extra field, but VCDS doesn't understand it's a VIN number.

Now I had similar situation with real car:

A4 B5 MY2000. Engine is K line, no VIN code in it.
A6 C5 ~MY2004 Instrument cluster (retrofitted, all functions work, no problem, some soldering required to make door indicators work) is K line with a A6 C5 VIN code stored in it.

What functions are not VIN-Restricted?
A VIN-Limited interface can do Auto-Scans, Clear DTCs, and look at Measuring Values on an unlimited number of cars. [..] In addition, you can make channel maps on an unlimited number of cars because sending us those maps helps us improve the product.
I wanted to create channel map for 01 Engine (Applications - Controller Channel Map - Both options checked, Output: Pre-Label file) and while VCDS was creating Adaptations, VIN registering popup showed up when Adaptation channel 010 was opened and then map creation process ended. Last lines in channel map file were about A09. Restarting vcds.exe didn't help, but should have tried to replug cable... that would help which I didn't do in the first place.

VIN popup could check if vcds is currently creating channel map or not.

So, I erased wrong VIN codes out of cluster's dump and made complete adaptation channel map from A01 to A99.
Could have saved myself 1 hour if Channel Maps were truly vin unlimited.
Map files and autoscan sent to support@RT email.

Thanks for reading.

That, on the other hand, sounds like a bug. I will try to gather the necessary control modules to reproduce it, because I haven't seen it happen with recent (UDS) cars.

Fixed in source. It was affecting only the non-UDS adaptation dialog, and as far as I can tell, had been present ever since new generation interfaces were supported. Thanks for reporting the issue!
