Audi MMI Rebooting

Hi guys

My brother's 2011 Audi A4 has an intermittent problem, the MMI goes blank and then reboots. On a 2 hour journey this might happen half a dozen times. He can't pinpoint any specific occasion when it happens, sometimes during a call, sometimes not, doesn't seem to correlate with any one thing. Once it reboots it just goes back to where it was before it went blank.

Today I ran a scan on VCDS and couldn't find any related faults.

Any ideas? Considering replacing the MMI module in the boot which is 4G0 035 056. But before we do this, I wanted to see if anyone on here could advise differently?

Based on your description, I was expecting to see faults in other modules complaining that they couldn't talk to the offending one. But I don't see anything like that, nor any other clues as to why your MMI is rebooting.

If it was rebooting I wouldn't expect it to go back to the same place, but instead to where it start when you turn the ignition on.

So I wonder if it's just an intermittent connection on the cable between the main unit and the display screen? This would also explain why no other modules complain about not being able to talk to the MMI?

Not all faults produce codes :cool:
That's when you have to use good old-fashioned 5 step fault finding:
- write down the symptoms
- come up with theory(ies) which MIGHT explain the symptoms
- come up with some checks/tests you can do to prove/disprove those theories
- fix anything you find
- test again until fixed

I would start by checking the connectors on the cable between the main unit in the boot and the MMI screen for security and/or damage.

The moving MMI screen would be the first place I would look...
