A4 engine temperature problem 8K-AU48

The engine is slow to get warm in the winter and cools down quickly when not under load. I've changed the thermostat which had no effect.


Also "G381 Loc. IDE04637 Engine temperature management actuator 99.74%" this value never changes.

The car is new enough that I'm fairly confident that the ECU monitors the temperatures (and their rate of change) fairly closely. Given that it's not throwing any fault codes, I would suppose that it's all within the expected parameters for this engine?

Did you try to block air dams with quick removable cardboard in front of radiator to increase heat efficiency & does your car support a heater core bifurcated inline thermostat?

Would not take this for granted. Although a different engine, but in my A3 8V 1.8TFSI CJSB I had a leaking thermostat. Could not get engine to normal operating temperature no matter what, but ECU was still happy with it. No fault codes whatsoever.

I've had the thermostat replaced which made no difference. Can anyone shed any light on the Engine temperature management actuator, this is always showing 99.74%. I have recorded the various levels and it looks to be just really poor temperature control. Sometimes after a short journey the cooling fan will switch on. I'm wondering if it could be sensor that's not faulty but just giving the wrong temperature.
The thermostat is a 3 port not the actuated 4 port but there is an actuator on the cabin heater line.

Some info here is puzzling. Oil temp and coolant within 1 c question that. Also 69C is about 156F , no where near 190/195 I would want as a target for heat.

Coolant fans don't normally come on until well above 195/90C but do excite for other various reasons such as AC, defrost ect but them coming on indicative of having hit some target but certainly no enough for stellar heat.

Have a TDI which I seem to have to change stat every year which can make some serious hot heat. Noted last time in small amount of rust deposit, which IMO was the culprit, as unit would do what yours did. Even blocked off all air as JACK said but in 7C e
Weather's should not need.

Who changed the stat? And is it burped or evaced properly?

Also my last STAT I specified OEM, and looked just like the other but would only use OEM that way you can say you did your best.

The heat deliver in system _273, that is beyond my pay grade, maybe UWE could input.

The measuring blocks say the outside air temperature is +7C but is it really?

These are all great posts aforementioned...........

I can tell you if the system doesn't make adequate PSI and a leak at expansion tank or o-ring on filler cap can cause this etc. it will never run enough flow to remove hot air from convection of the heater core.

If this condition exists it can indeed cause hot spots in engine and make radiator come on sooner as a sign of such issues & with no DTC's!, apparently?

If the climate control sees a value of temp being adequate it may never open a blend door for cabin.......indeed should be investigated!

Thanks for all the advice guys, this is a much better place than some of the forums I've been searching. I'll check on the expansion tank cap but it hasn't lost any fluid level. I'm also going to get an IR temperature meter this weekend so I can actually verify the readings from the sensors.
I'm fairly confident with the thermostat replacement as it was carried out by an audi approved independent garage.
