Hello everyone, this is my first post. Fairly new to VCDS, as well.

Car is a 2001 Audi A4 Avant 1.8t w/ 5 speed. Has 227k miles, have owned since 140k.

Location is southeast PA.

Relevant mods include a Borla cat-back exhaust, Carbonio intake (utilizing OEM MAF), Forge 007 diverter valve, Techtonics Tuning OE cat converter. Think that's it. Parts have been on for 60k miles or so except cat has more mileage.

Battery is a few months old and alternator was rebuilt at a local shop at the same time.

Here is the auto-scan:

Car is a few months overdue for inspection because I know it won't pass emissions and I haven't had time to try and address the issue seriously. One month ago I did replace both oxygen sensors with new Bosch units I purchased from ECS. The catalytic converter is from TT and OE. It probably has 100k miles by now.

I cleared the engine codes maybe two weeks ago so the four listed faults are fresh. I can understand that the cat may be getting old but am surprised by the 02 heating element fault and uncertain about the reasons for the fuel trim faults.

Thanks for the help!

Hello OP and welcome to the VCDS forum.

Can you please clear all codes and before even running car, please post a new fresh auto-scan.

I'm suspecting a false air leak at intake gasket or booster line circuit etc. & since Multiplicative but I'm also suspicious of the MAF part number?

Please tell us what MAF is in this?

Were the OXS sensors aforementioned & changed due to heater shorts?

Please see JPPSG and undo any FOD that could run interference for an AECD.

Too rich at idle and too lean under load... Might want to check the fuel pressure, the FPR, and the "vacuum" line to it.

Well if going to check FP Pressure & indeed you should, it would be wise to check volume and change a filter because you can still have all the PSI in the world & with no or inadequate flow of fluids, always check the FP pickup screen for FOD!

Thanks for the responses.

I will clear all codes and run the auto-scan again as soon as I have a chance, hopefully tomorrow evening. I assume you mean the codes for every control module in the car, not just the engine.

Could you tell me what "undo any FOD that could run interference for an AECD" means? I have gathered that FOD is Foreign Object Damage and AECD is Auxiliary Emissions Control Device but I'm not sure what you're implying.

I will also check and post the MAF part number. I believe it is original to the car.

Fuel pressure regulator makes sense to me, that is original to the car. All braided vacuum lines in the engine bay I replaced 3 years ago but I will check the one to the FPR. Fuel filter I changed last year with a new Mann OE part.

Will also check fuel pump pickup screen and try to check fuel pressure. I have a kit for CIS cars, can probably figure out a way to hook it up to the A4.

And yes, IIRC, the wideband 02 sensor had a heating element fault so I replaced it and the downstream sensor I replaced simply because I was "in there" and it had been on the car at least 70k miles.

When we make recommendations or at least me in the repair or OBD support area they will only reflect the purity of the RTFB by the OEM.
Car is required recommended be stock to comport with RTFB specifications and any possible regulation.
I only try to advise or ask questions for qualified repairs or testing procedures to the best of my ability to keep things consistent & hopefully safe.

In order for VCDS to work or the forum a car must be verified to be able to take advantage of testing with the tool & if it is crippled we or you need to know, if a valid stack is present.

Makes sense, I understand.

I have some more of the information requested, but did not have time to check everything.

First, I checked and replaced again, the vacuum line from the manifold to FPR. Appeared fine, but had some of the OEM braided hose handy, so I installed a new length.

Second, the part number on the MAF is 06A 906 461L.

Third, I cleared the codes for every control module and re-ran the Auto Scan before starting the car again. As you may have suspected, a few faults came back immediately after clearing them.

Suspect OXS sensors are non genuine faulty, controller may have damage from prior heater short. I also suspect the intake is leaking or an injector seal.
Crimp off or plug n80 and booster to isolate.
Intake likes to leak at 3&4 zyl.
Install stock controller for trim readings to be observed and to rule out damage from prior service history.
Please engine off ignition on clear codes adapt TV 0x01-04-060, than start engine cold and let run 3 minutes idle only. Key off 1 minute, then key on run for 5 minutes idle only and post a scan.
During these warmups, log ECT, IAT and trims.
Take ecu out and apart and see if visual evidence of any burn damage. Not always apparent but do the inspection.

After a month hiatus, I'm back on this car. Sorry for the timelapse, for the most part, only being able to do this at night, in the dark, in the cold, makes it tough. Anyway, I replaced the FPR with a brand new Bosch unit with the correct part number. Given the age and mileage of the car, I was happy to do that. Also replaced all 8 injector o-rings and I can tell they were leaking because the manifold around each injector was damp and attracted extra dirt.

Do you think ECS Tuning would supply non genuine Bosch 02 sensors? Everything about the packaging seemed legitimate.

I did not get a chance to disassemble the ECU and look for trouble signs, but that is on my list.

I did my best to follow your most recent instructions, but not sure I got it all right because I'm still learning VCDS. I cleared all codes with the engine off, ignition ON. Went to 0x01-04-060 to adapt the TV, which takes me to the Basic Settings, but I wasn't sure how to adapt it there. Taking my chances and moving on, I started the engine cold and let it run 3 minutes. Then off 1 minute. Then on again for 5 minutes and then off again and did an Auto Scan. I also attempted to log the ECT, IAT, and trims as you said, and I did get an Excel file but not sure how to share that here and not sure I selected the right group for the trims. I'm certain you meant fuel trims, but don't know what best represented them. I chose Injection Timing in m/s.

Ok, I followed the directions in the readiness script. Cool little process. I noted the script was labeled for an 2000 model year car with an ATW engine and my car is a 2001 with an AWM, but I'm guessing it makes no difference. Seemed to work correctly.

Either way, the car did not seem to pass a few of the tests assuming I waited long enough which was between 2-3 minutes for a few. Car was well up to temp, certainly above 80*C.

Step 13 Heated Oxygen Sensor Diagnostic: Never got a resistance value in Field 1 for Sensor 1. Sensor 2 checked out.

Step 17 Response Time for Front Heated Oxygen Sensor: Field 4 (Result) never read anything except Test Off and Field 3 (Periodic Time) steadily read 1.250. Field 2 indicated cat temp
at 615*C.

Step 19 Oxygen Sensor Control System: Fields 1-3 displayed values within the acceptable ranges but Field 4 (Result) never changed from Test On after waiting a few minutes.

Step 23 Three Way Catalytic Converter Diagnostic: Field 4 (Cat Conversion) read Test Off despite engine speed and cat temp being in range.

Step 25 Secondary Air System Diagnostic: Field 4 went from Test On to Test Off (could hear pump run while Test On) but never to System OK. Values in Fields 1-3 seemed okay.

As always, I appreciate the help!

Sometimes I wonder! But not because I doubt you know what you're talking about, just my ability to interpret it.

Are you referring your last post when you told me: "Please engine off ignition on clear codes adapt TV 0x01-04-060, than start engine cold and let run 3 minutes idle only. Key off 1 minute, then key on run for 5 minutes idle only and post a scan."

I can try again tomorrow, I must have missed a button for the TV adaptation in Basic Settings.

I also attempted to log the ECT, IAT, and trims as you said, and I did get an Excel file but not sure how to share that here and not sure I selected the right group for the trims. I'm certain you meant fuel trims, but don't know what best represented them. I chose Injection Timing in m/s.
Sooo, where are the logs? Don't clear faults just before doing this if you are just logging them for couple of seconds.
Make a logfile of 030, 032 and 099 group at idle from cold engine to at least warm.

Most likely my "ASS_BuRGERS" & due to eating to many Burger King Whoppers!

I love Inverse racist hamburger advertisements.

Now if I could only get any of the sandwich's that are in that picture below, things would be grand!

What is the best way to post the logs here? I can post a file for 030,032,099 and also the ones Jack requested.

Copy the contents and paste 'em in here, preferably between [CODE] and [/CODE] tags.

Ok, I will do that once I get a successful log.

Side question: sometimes when I perform an auto scan and save it :C/Ross Tech/VCDS/Scans, when I open up the saved scan, it only shows 3 or 4 control modules. For example, tonight's scan shows me 01 Engine, 35 Central Locks, 45 Interior Monitor but nothing else. I visually saw the auto scan go through more control modules than that while it was performing the scan. Also, I definitely selected the correct chassis code (8D) for my '01 A4. Again, this is not an issue every time, but if it's something I'm doing wrong, I can't figure out what.

Another question; tonight I was trying to perform the routine Jack requested: "Please engine off ignition on clear codes adapt TV 0x01-04-060, than start engine cold and let run 3 minutes idle only. Key off 1 minute, then key on run for 5 minutes idle only and post a scan", but when I turned the key from RUN for the 1 minute segment, the VCDS said it lost signal from the controller and thus it closed out the measuring blocks I had open and the log I was creating. And since the engine was no longer cold, I felt like I was done for the night. However, I didn't turn the key to the OFF position. Maybe this is a dumb question, but how many key positions does this car have? OFF, ON, RUN, START? I'm thinking VCDS should only lose communication if I go to OFF, correct?

Final question: Jack, you requested I do this sequence at idle only but I always have to rev the engine to get the alternator to begin charging. I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but will revving the engine to start charging throw off what you need to see in the log?

Thanks.

You don't need to make a logfile while doing throttle body adaptation.

BTW, add these lines in new line of c:\Ross-tech\VCDS\MyAutoScan.txt
That will do Autoscan a lot faster without connecting to not existing modules.
Then select "My A4 B5 ATW" from Chassis select dropdown in Autoscan window.
Code:
00,My A4 B5 ATW,01,03,08,15,17,35,45,56
