Hi guys

I´m a newbi here, and have just purchased a very nice S6 from 2000 (C5 4B). I have purchased the Hex enthusiast from Ross-tech and have started to play with it. I have no knowledge about this tool, but will hopefully learn by reading and practice. The tool lists a number of faults which I will try to look into one by one, but today the car works almost perfect.

Originally this car was installed with a RNS-D, but a previous owner has ripped this out and put in a Android unit which I didn´t like at all. I have now retrofitted a RNS-E, and after some challenges, everything is now working fine. Info from the unit to the DIS, illumination in the buttons, turns on and off with the ignition. All seem to work fine. However the VDCS log lists a number of faults, but I don´t know if I can live with these or not. Any ideas from you will highly appreciated.

The issue I am struggling with now is the buttons on the original steering wheel. The previous owner may have changed the code when the Android was installe, but I am not able to change the existing code (00100). Even if I don´t get any error messages when trying, it just jumps back to the current code. I don´t have any security access code (if this is needed), but VCDS suggests 12345. Do I need a different code, or do you have any other ideas.

I have attached the last log. Is it possible to read the date / time when the different faults are logged? Any ideas how to move on here? Any special fault that shows up as more serious than other ?

save the autoscan as a reference, clear errors and let's see what stays. when posting the scan, please post it full and between CODE tags.

the errors about "Terminal 30 voltage too low" are sympthoms of a battery about to die.

Thanks. So the "Terminal 30 voltage too low" could be some days old, from before I replaced the battery ?

hopefully somebody will chime in for the correct coding but the "internal malfunction" is not good...

Which steering wheel exactly you've got?
C17,0xxx?: Steering Wheel Type
C18,1 = Radio and Telephone Operation
C19,2 = Radio Operation (6-Buttons)
C20,5 = Radio/Telephone and Voice Control

You have rnse fitted from B6/B7 by looking at it's part number.
I have B7 rnse retrofit into B5 in progress, but don't have time to finish it yet.

We don't know about other multimedia extras your car has:
tv tuner, satellite radio, aux, ami, etc. It's all needed for correct coding if that's what you want.

Thanks. I will try to do the change you suggest tomorrow. I am not sure what the steering wheel is called, but it has 6 buttons with 3 buttons on each side: Volume up / down and phone answer button on right, and search up, search down and a third button on left. There is an old Nokia in the arm-rest, but I don´t intend to connect this.

The car has BOSE, and I have connected a bluetooth-device to the cd shifter plug and configured this as AUX-input which works fine. No multimedia extras.

I'm quite sure those old phone interfaces doesn't speak with diagnostics. Once i opened car interface box 4B0862335B. It had K wire connected to it, but on PCB there were no traces. Looked like incomplete sh#t made my it's manufacturer.

What coding for mfsw you were trying to save? Do you see balloon popups when opening it for coding?

As far as I remember there is a balloon popping up yes. I have tried both 00101 and 00102 without any success. It just goes back to 00100 without any message.

There are lot of versions of that mfsw relay
4B0907487,
4B0907487A,
4B0907487F,
4B0907487D,
4B0907487E,
4B0907487G,
4B0907487H,
4B0907487L.

You may need another version (487F probably), depending what you have now (487m or 487A). Read this guide carefully.

Cancel that change. I looked that up again, and 9 could be for "Bose", so that could be correct.

Thanks for all advice guys!

I have tried to find the Security Access Code to be able to change the code for MFSW, but without any luck. I have looked in the Factory repair Manual, but can´t find it there either. Can anyone tell me where exactly to find this code? Is it an unique code for each module per individual car, or per car model ?

Are you 100% sure that you need Security Access Code?

In the past I used to help many owners with mainly RNS-E retrofits and only ever needed a SAC when retrofitting cruise control, never when recoding MFSW or RNS-E.

No, I am not 100% sure, but thought this perhaps was the reason why the value always jumps back to 00100 after having tried to changed it. No message. Just ignoring my input.

Hi guys.

I´m still struggling with the situation described in the start of this tread as I´m not able to re-code the control module for MFSW. Do anyone have any idea why VCDS and this module doesn´t accept any change and just return back to the current value ? The phone buttons on the steering wheel work fine, but the volume buttons do not. The car was initially delivered with an RNS-D, and the steering wheel buttons worked fine at that time.

VCDS reports that the module won't accept the coding change, VCDS isn't itself not accepting the change.

IIRC the RNS-D "spoke" an unusual dialect of CAN which required converting - this conversion was done by an extra "black box" (it's many years ago, but I think it was also used for the TMC tuner?) that has to be removed when swapping to the RNS-E.

Hi PetrolDave

I did remove the TMC and ran the CAN wires to the RNS-E. This works fine, and data from the unit is displayed in the DIS. Must be something else that I haven´t found out yet.
