Any idea what brought on this error?

Does the sunroof work? If so, the first thing I would try is running it to each stop, holding the control for a a second or two once it reaches the stop, releasing it, and pressing it again -- much like one fixes this kind of error in a window or seat position module.

There are also several Basic Settings in the module that look like they might be applicable, but I would be reluctant to try them blindly.

I had the active info display fitted yesterday at the dealers and when he checked after everything was coded on the cluster it showed a fault in the sunroof,so he attempted basic settings 3 times and it had lost the one touch function and during the basic settings it would only open around half way then hang for a few mins.
but when i had the car out the workshop i tried to do the window thing like you said and i have got it opening fully and the one touch working and it closes fine...but it still shows the error straight after you clear the fault.

Well if the dealer (presumably using ODIS) couldn't square that away, I don't have high hopes for doing it with VCDS in the near future. Part of the problem is a Polo like that is not something we can get our hands on to develop a procedure.
