Helllo,
I am having an issue with my wifes 2015 Audi Q7. We purchased it used about a year ago and have had no issues up until about a month ago when the steering column stopped responding to the up command. Now it isn't moving at all. After searching on the internet it seems like this is a common enough issue however the only fix I have found is a dealership reset on the column. Can this reset be done with the vcds? I have scanned the car and found no trouble codes to investigate. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

If you've scanned it, please post the scan so people can see exactly how the vehicle is equipped. Even if you didn't explicitly save the scan, there should be an archival copy of it in your Scans sub-folder.

Yes, VCDS should be able to do that.

[Select]
[09-Cent. Elect.]
[Basic Settings]
Group 001.

The note I have is: Make sure to approach all 4 end positions (up, down, forward, back) before performing the basic setting.

You probably should read the TSB posted two messages above.

The steering column was working in/out but not up/down, was enabled in vcds. Did the vcds basic settings on and now shows as disabled and the steering column does not adjust at all now. First time trying out vcds and i guess i got lots to learn and be careful. Seemed like an easy fix. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks D.

I did the same exact steps as you. My steering column was only working in/out and not up/down. Basic settings initially showed it as “enabled”, but now after setting basic setting ON, is now showing “disabled” every time I open VCDS and doesn’t work.

I think the problem might be we both opened the controller and instructed VCDS to set the basic settings, but we didn’t even use or extend or reach the end points for the 4-way toggle switch (not sure how this would have worked for the up or down anyway since my up/down didn’t work before). Now all adjustment is stopped and disabled.

Is this something that can be reset so the setting displays as enabled or? If so, please advise.

@Uwe - is there an exact procedure to reset the steering column setting so I goes back to enabled?

I'm having the same problem - the up and down on my 2014 Audi Q7 steering column does not function.
Uwe's comment (Make sure to approach all 4 end positions (up, down, forward, back) before performing the basic setting) is helpful in that perhaps if we place a current source into the up / down functions of the column motor, cause it to reach the end points, and cause J519 to realize that the column moves, we can then reset the basic setting?

I found a thread on AudiWorld that references a procedure: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-discussion-112/steering-wheel-column-wont-telescope-2807042/

Summarized here -

[09] - Central Electronics

Basic Setting

Steering Column Adjustment

[Select]
[09 - Central Electronics]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The adjustment should now be learned.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Can we somehow make procedure out of this that involves moving the column with an external current source? There is a connector for the motors that is easily reachable.

Here's another thread where someone used an external current source to move the column, just to get it to a reasonable position https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7...st-steering-column-not-working-2885150/page2/

"I used the TSB wiring schematic and tested the voltage and current on the in/out to test. Normal Volts/Amps. I then tested the up/down and no voltage present to the motor connector. I then shut off the car accessories. I disconnected the wiring adapter to the motors from the control circuit. I used my 12v car battery charger to apply a voltage to the up/down motor. Low and behold.. it adjusted!! I moved it to my normal position (most of the way down) and reconnected everything. I wanted to see what would happen and if it would try and reset it to the top position. Nope... stayed there... still not sending control voltage to the motor. But the in/out worked like normal... so at least it's in the vertical position i wanted."

I wish I could buy the shop manual for my Q7 the same way I did did for my d2 A8 and B6 S4 cabriolet - and Uwe graciously gifted me the A8 d3 manual, which is now well used (thank you!). I would like to know if G357 and G358 are position sensors.

And here is another thread.. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-discussion-112/q-steering-adjustment-issue-2994129/
The author uses relays to substitute one column switch appear to be another - to make J519 to think everything's ok.

"If you attempted to do a Basic setting of the steering column and did not make sure that the column adjustment for both vertical and axial plains were operational as I did, you end up disabling the Voltage supply of terminal 30 left.
To return to only one of the 2 functions being operational you need to make J519 think that both adjustments work without drawing excessive current and position senders return credible feedback.
To do this I temporarily wired in a 4 pole C contact relay and a switch controlling it to sequence both outputs and corresponding position senders so that J519 saw the operational motor and positioning sender twice. In my case the axial adjustment motor is failed open, therefore I disconnected both motors V123 and V124 as well as both position sending units G357 and G358 and wired the 2 individual motors and position senders to a set of 4 NO and NC contacts and wired the common of those contacts to the only functioning motor and position sending unit. Please see drawing below. I then initiated the Basic Settings with VCDS which first moves the steering column all the way up then all the way down and back to center, then I flipped the relay on which connected the axial motor output from J519 to the vertical motor and position sender via the NO contact on the 4 pole relay which moved the Vertical adjustment motor all the way down then all the way up and back to center for a second time, thus simulating a working axial motor and position sender."

So G 357 and G358 are position sensors...

A question - During basic settings -04, group 1, does the module attempt to move the wheel up, down, in out? Can we just try that? Or do I need to move the wheel / fool the module before attempting basic settings?

I had a similar problem on an A6 2010 model. Customer stated up/down worked, but not in out. i tried resetting basic settings and disabled terminal 30 in the process. Since we knew the motor was likely the issue I got a used and tested column assembly and swapped over the steering lock from the original and put it in. Terminal 30 was alive and I misread/misunderstood the procedure and tried basic settings again to initialize the column. It disabled Terminal 30, but before that it pushed the column out to its fully extended position so I knew the motor worked at least.

I was able to restore terminal 30 by pulling the fuse for the steering column control control module and walking away for a couple hours to do other things. When i put the fuse back in after giving it a rest the terminal was alive again. I had since read many accounts of successful basic settings adventures. From my digesting the info the procedure I interpreted is to go to 09, basic settings with the memory switch on the door off, cycle the switch to extend and compress the column to the ends and do the same with the up/down. Then activate basic settings and the module repeats the performance and all works.

I had terminal 30 enabled but no response from the switch to move the column. I tried unsuccessfully again to enable the column with basic settings and disabled terminal 30 again. So after reawakening the terminal 30 I then moved the switch to column extend with no response from the column, but I held the switch the amount of time I figured it would have taken to extend. I then did the same with retract, no response but held the switch one cycle time. Repeated the same with up, then down, still no response but held them a while.

I then initiated basic setting and the controller took off and did its sequence of cycles. Afterwards the column switch worked too. I think there is a serious bug in the column software that allows this problem and I was glad to have worked around it in my clumsy way and illogical thinking.

And no I did not disable it and retry again to test my results, rather release the car to service and not know for sure.

I just picked up a 2013 Q7 with the issue of no vertical movement. @davek181 so you had a similar issue? Are the 'basic settings' operations straight-forward? I'm not sure I've seen anything aside from:

[09] - Central Electronics
Basic Setting
Steering Column Adjustment
[Select]
[09 - Central Electronics]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]

The adjustment should now be learned.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Does the bolded section step through instruction on-screen for resetting basic settings? I ask because I've read various random things about moving the control knob to a position, etc..
Any assistance is appreciated. I'm not new to using VCDS for basic diag, but not really falimiar with basic settings, adaptation, etc.

I had same problem as many of you on 2015 Audi Q7 TDI. Up/down worked, In/out didn't. Did the adaptation above and Terminal 30 Disabled!!!! I tried everything mentioned on the internet, ie...pull fuses, unplug battery (overnight even), unplugged battery and shorted postive and neg cables together for 5min (10min actually), and entered the security code on 09 Central Elect module. But still disabled!!!

Then read about the little button next to the steering column 4-way switch. Button??? Low and behold, there it is!!! Pushed it. Did a little dance, said a prayer, asked for forgiveness of all my sins, and tried this YET AGAIN and didn't do any prerequisites of trying to go down/up/in/out......AND THE STEERING COLUMN STARTED MOVING THRU ALL 4 DIRECTIONS. That's the first success I've heard! The button on the steering column in question is called the easy entry button - pressing it toggles the steering column easy entry feature on or off. Should the column easy entry feature be turned off, or turned on? How can you tell if it is on or off? And then you performed the procedure teaching the basic setting? Was the driver's seat memory switch in the on position or in the off position? (on=seat memory switch in depressed position).
How sure are we that we can wake up terminal 30 - by depressing and releasing the easy entry button on the steering column? Or by removing the control module fuse for a few hours?
I cannot see the images you posted - I'm not sure why. Do those two images posted show up for anyone else / what do I need to learn here?
Thanks!! First hopeful procedure I've seen.

Memory Seat "Off" per what others have said
ZFdR3Zr.jpg

Easy Entry/Exit Button ON ("out" position) - this is what fixed the "Terminal 30 Disabled" status when coding. And now my steering column manually moves with the up/down buttons and moves to the saved seat memory locations. However, I've realized the Easy Entry/Exit function does not work. I've tried the button in and out. The steering wheel does not move up out of the way and the seat doesn't go back when I turn the car off, nor when I open the door. Not a big deal really, but would be nice to know "why" it doesn't work.

Here's another link...trying to track down the success stories. The door memory switch in question has an on / off indication, so you can tell it is off.
