The battery definitely shuts things down as it loses power, but if those things are functioning properly, they come back up with the battery manager decided the battery has sufficient power again.

It's supposed to close the circle if one device isn't able to carry optics.

I am confused as I thought that if I unplugged the optical cable out of say the radio as an example and replaced it with the optical loop test cable and carried out an optical test, if the radio was what caused a break, the results would mean that the optical test would show that it is ok. I may have made this sound confusing but could someone give me a step by step guide on how to test the amp?
You would get an optic error on the device you have it looped out, the loop cable is there to bypass a dead / faulty module. The fault on your MMI system is the dead AMP, it's not showing up in your VCDS scan and it's showing electric & optic error in your bus scan. Check the fuse for the AMP and see if you getting power at the harness, if you are getting power and then your AMP will most likely need replacing. You should be able to find a used one on ebay for a lot less than the dealer prices, but you will need to have component protection removed which can only be done at dealers or garages that have a licensed version of VAS.
Thanks B5NUT for your reply, please excuse the fact that I am not very tech savy but a quick learner. I was previously advised to check the sound system module fuse which was in the right hand compartment of the boot and that was fine. Is this the same fuse for the amp or is it somewhere else?

If you just want to test volatage to amp pins, multimeter does also work, or any pen light tester.
But for correct testing you would want to put a load on the wire to see the wire integrity.
