Thanks for your reply NEtech. I couldn't log in to the vw site though. It looks like you have
to be a VW/Audi tech and have an account to log in.

No, those sites are the official repair info and are available to anyone, for a fee, which I believe is $35/day for https://erwin.vw.com/. There are also longer term subscriptions available, but you should be able to download most everything for your car in a day.

However, you do need to register. My erWin -> Registration..

OK, thanks. I'll check it out. I am a bit perplexed because the car will start and run, then just die and won't start again.

It looks like from the printout that there is communication with the ecm under the first section: engine

but not through the instrument cluster or the brakes. I'm just not sure on what do check next?

Thanks.

The other modules are complaining they can't talk to the ECU. That would be totally expected if the ECU went "off-line" for some reason; and of course the engine would die and refuse to re-start as well. Now, why would an ECU go "off-line"? The first thing that comes to my mind is lack of power. When it dies and won't start again, check voltage supplies to the ECU. You'll need a wiring diagram and a multimeter to do that.

OK, I'll look at the wiring diagrams and see and check voltages. I bought a new battery today and it started right up and ran
for several minutes (idling) and then died all of a sudden. It makes a lot of clicking noises in the throttle body by the front of
the engine and the ECP and check engine lights flash off and on. The car will only start when these 2 lights are on.

We actually had it running for over an hour today and took it for a 5 or 6 mile drive and when we got back it died in the driveway - UGGH!

Very frustrating but the good news is that when it was running it ran GREAT!

Any more help would surely be appreciated - Thanks in advance!

Still won't run today. I have a VW Service Manual from 1999 - 2002, does anyone know if the wiring diagrams for
a 2003 GTI 1.8T would be the same?

Assuming your service manual covers the 2002 GTI 1.8T, I don't think much changed between 2002 and 2003.

OK, I've got intermittent EPC and Check Engine lights on like I mentioned before and the Throttle position sensor keeps clicking on and off.

The car will only start when both EPC and Check Engline lights are ON. It dies shortly afterward.

I checked Pin 5 (Light Purple wire with Black stripe) that plugs into the TPS and it oscillates between 3.5 and 12.1 (battery voltage).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance, we really need HELP! :)

My son thinks it's the ECM - does anybody think that may be it?

I'm not getting much help here except for the DICTATOR (and I want to thank you for replying so at least I don't feel totally helpless!) so maybe I'll try a different forum - any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I think some of us might have ideas, but the fact that your username doesn't show up green isn't the best motivation for other volunteers to help :)

OK, how do I make it green? I've owned the Ross-Tech Software for awhile now (probably a couple of years) and when I registered I gave my serial# for my software so I'm not
sure what else to do?

When you registered for the forum, you provided a serial number that was purchased from a reseller but never registered with RT for support. You can remedy that deficiency by filling out this form. Use the Notes or Special Instructions field to say something like: "Forum username y2motoskier would like full access" and we'll see what we can do. ;)
