ACC retrofit was completed this morning. when I plugged in the radar, it triggered Component Protection in the Gateway and, of course, in the radar itself. CP was cleared with ODIS online.

I followed the coding/adapt instructions in the famous spanish PDF, everything was pretty much straight forward. one note: it says to code integration for the ACC into the Driving Profile Selection with ODIS. I was able to do it with VCDS, just had to enable EXPERIMENTAL coding. makes sense since that book was written long ago.

the radar NEVER flagged the need for calibration. I made sure the donor car was a Golf to ensure the mounting position is the same. honestly I was surprised that it did not ask for calibration, as the tolerance for the radar position is less than one degree.

I went for two drive tests and it all works fine. now I gotta get used to it, I had never driven with ACC before and it just feels weird sometimes when the car brakes by itself.

below is a current autoscan with no errors at all. I don't like bragging but I am kinda proud, again I did it by myself.

the only note is that the steering wheel buttons are not the right ones, because I didn't know when I bought them, and I got the buttons for the standard steering wheel, while my car has the R/GTI style steering wheel. it all works fine, they just don't fit physically. 5G0 959 442 N would be the correct ones, I have them coming soon.

Get it calibrated. For me it did not trigger a need for calibration either but it was way off when calibrated. I experienced some hair rising automatic braking with ACC enabled on buses on bus stop etc :)

Calibration is not that expensive to do.

it's not about the money. like all retrofits, when I asked the closest dealer for assistance the looked at me like I came down from Mars.

And if the dealer doesn't look at you like an alien, the factory order is to calibrate everything at once. When I asked about calibrating only the lane assist camera, they basically want to do an axle alignment, ACC and lane camera calibration all at once, which was close to 4 hours of work.

Yes, because the calibration needs the mechanic to do alignment check before starting the calibration, but they don't have to do the actual wheel alignment if everything is ok. And 4 hours is bullshit. For me it took less than an hour to do the calibration of both ACC and lane assist camera. And you can do only the other one, no need to do both, ODIS has separate guided functions for them. Of course they both are done at the same trouble as the calibration procedure is almost the same for both and the equipment is the same.

Why are people investing a lot of money to retrofit ACC and lane assist camera but are not able to invest 200 € for official calibration??? C'mon guys, these are SAFETY features. After this people are whining why VAG is preventing these retrofits with codes.

If the dealer however does not know what is the calibration procedure, I would stay far away from them. It does not matter if it's a retrofitted or factory original ACC or camera, just follow the guided functions in ODIS and that's it. It guides them visually how to do it.

Problem is that, as soon as you retrofit a newer module than the ones originally available for your model, ODIS will just refuse to work with your retrofitted module, like in my case where I installed a current camera in my 2015 Alhambra.

Problem is that, as soon as you retrofit a newer module than the ones originally available for your model, ODIS will just refuse to work with your retrofitted module, like in my case where I installed a current camera in my 2015 Alhambra.

I don't understand how this relates to the ACC discussion, and I am not really sure what you mean. if you are talking about the Gateway, I installed the very one ETKA told me to. it was not ODIS who didn't want to talk to the module. dealer lacked the expertise to perform the FeC restoration. why? I have a theory, but cannot make it public :D

when I found somebody who knew what he was doing, I heard ODIS and the Gateway sing a duet.

To clarify a little bit. This means that you cannot code, load software or re-parameterize the unit directly through factory connection using factory code database (or SVM). That it refuses saying the module is not valid for the car. BUT, basic settings, adaptations etc. all work just fine with ODIS as well.

Hmmm.... looks suspicious to me. And he tells you need to have that exact radar he installed so most likely not all flat radars are fine.

I asked for explanations and he says he can activate anything, including Drive Profile Select for example, without the need of a FeC code. of course he won't say how, he needs to keep the secret. I am perplexed.

I don't believe him.

One thing I read that for MIB system FeCs it is apparently possible that if you have online FaZIT access and you know the donor car VIN from where the MIB system is from. It is possible to search the FeCs with the donor car VIN from database and reassign those FeCs to your cars VIN number. This will then return these new FeCs to your MIB by using the appropriate function in ODIS.

Now I don't know how accurate this information is and is it possible to do this all FeCs including ACC and drive profile.

I had exactly the same thought that this is how it must work (if it really works somehow).
I dont see a specific option in ODIS so far to transfer from VIN A to VIN B only from "VIN a Old Module" to "VIN a new module". However, there are ways to ignore the automatic VIN detection in ODIS and specify another VIN.

My theory is that if you have a Virgin Gateway and ACC and use a VIN identification from another car which had the feature, you might be able to restore the FEC via FAZIT to the brand new modules.

I found a virgin ACC module and thinking of buying it. Gateway is not that expensive - maybe worth the shot.

so if this FeC code transfer is possible between VINs, then he must have a database of demolished cars that had this and that feature. it makes sense and it cannot be any way different.

I dont think you would even need a DB of demolished cars. In my theory, you identify the car with another VIN which has ACC (VINs are visible for all cars in the US, so you can just go on Ebay and find a car with this feature) and a virgin gateway and ACC. VW will check their DB and restore FECs for the specific modules with functions of the "wrong" VIN. It will not know that the car is not the car, so VW will not change anything in their DB for your or the donors VIN but just reload the FECs onto the modules.

Again, all total theory but this is the only way it somehow makes sense to me - which doesnt mean I am right :)
I will have to try but need to get the modules first, maybe I "just" start with the Gateway as its cheap and verify the FECs its received afterwards comparing it to the original Gateway.

You guys realize if this theory is correct and you talk about it in an open forum, VW is likely to take steps to close this loophole, right?

You can't do FEC without CP and by this time CP already knows VIN. You also can't put another VIN as Signature will fail.

I guess we are far away from discovering specifics but as we already see 2 examples in different forums from different people, there must be a way and its likely through ODIS. Need to ask my wife to give me some playtime with her Tiguan and my kids to leave me alone ;)

With Ford, the VIN is stored in the ECM and Gateway and can be changed via IDS (which has to be an option in case both modules are damaged and need replacement, the car could not be identified by IDS anymore) - how is the design for Volkswagen?
