If you get a message of "Can't Open Codes File: CODES.DAT", the issue can happen for different reasons:

  • security settings on your computer is not giving the VCDS software read/write permission
  • hyperactive virus scanner
  • CIA mind control penetrating the foil cap

Delete the default install of VCDS which is found on here on your hard drive:

C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS

Deleting the Ross-Tech folder will remove the software. Now run the VCDS installer again, when you get to the Choose Install Location screen, click on the [Browse] button:

Browse to your Documents type folder, select the folder and then click [OK]:

You will now see the new install location of VCDS:

Click on [Install] to continue.

Yes, I had this problem too. The solution that worked for me was to right-click the VCDS program shortcut and select "Run as Administrator". (I have the VCDS software installed in the "Program Files" folder.) To make the setting permanent, right-click the program shortcut, select "Properties", open the "Compatibility" tab, and check-mark "Run as Administrator".

Despite the Download page stating quite clearly that you shouldn't do that? Why?

It should not be necessary to run VCDS "as administrator".

It's so that all users can use the program with just one installation.

The VCDS setup/installer doesn't differentiate between individual and all user installations at this point, however - this should only effect the start menu shortcuts at this point. The installation folder should have no effect on multi or single-user installations.
