I finally have all of the parts necessary for this retrofit.
1. Factory heated seats from a totaled out car.
2. Wiring from kufatec.de
3. Heater control panel with heated seats buttons.
4. Highline BCM purchased from VW dealership.

My questions are as follows...
1. Do I need to do any vag com coding first before the dealership installs the BCM?
2. At what point during the BCM install do they need to "burn" the VIN to the BCM?

I don't see any walk throughs anywhere detailing a BCM swap to highline.

first of all install WinMerge on your computer, then take a FULL backup of the car with VCDS, you never know. autoscan + admaps of ALL modules;

Climatronic panel swap:
1) replace Climatronic panel, you can do this on the fly no need to disconnect battery (but switch engine/ignition off...);
2) set old Climatronic panel Long Coding to the new one;
3) dump admap of the new Climatronic panel and use WinMerge to compare it with the old one. change all adaptations as necessary;
4) check if you have any errors left, you might need to run Basic Settings.

I am not gonna give you instructions for the BCM since the dealer will take care of it, and their scan tool is different from VCDS. just remember to bring ALL your keys with you because the new BCM will need to learn every keyfob.

running the Kufatec loom is a big PITA, I found it to be shorter than needed so I had to literally strip down the car to the chassis. I mean remove seats, center console/tunnel/armrest and the whole carpet.

good luck.

I am assuming I have to do a dump of my current BCM now and then upload it to the new BCM when I put it in? I am also assuming I need to either do this in the dealership parking lot or have my car towed there because the keys won't work after I put the new BCM in?

when I said I won't give you instructions for the BCM, it was because I assumed you bought the BCM AND the swap labour from the dealer. isn't that the case?
their scan tool (named ODIS) has a Guided Function to replace a control module. it will take care of all coding + admap so you don't have to do it manually. provided that you bought the specific BCM part number that ETKA (spare parts catalogue software) says.

tell me if you need steps to replace the BCM yourself.

side note: the key(s) would work, to start the engine, because the immobilizer is not in the BCM. what you lose is the keyfob(s) locking and unlocking the doors/trunk.

Never heard of ETKA till now. I ordered the BCM (5Q0 937 087 S) based on the same make model year of my car but high(er)(est) trim level car. Thinking that meant "highline" model BCM that I have heard everyone say.

tell me if you need steps to replace the BCM yourself.
Yes, please! I tried to have the dealership install the BCM and they could not do it, even after calling VW technical because there were "dash lights and keys would not fully function". VW technical told them this "mod" could not be done.

side note: the key(s) would work, to start the engine, because the immobilizer is not in the BCM. what you lose is the keyfob(s) locking and unlocking the doors/trunk.
Good to know!

you don't buy a control module based on MY only, unfortunately. trust me, I learned it the hard way. that's why I have an extra BCM on a shelf, it was not fully compatible with my car. the dealer-level ETKA will evaluate the VIN and tell you THE part number you need, and when we talk about control modules that have different trim levels, it will always suggest the highest.

I have a, well, semi-official version of ETKA, which is offline, so I cannot input the VIN, but I usually nail it with the model year and by cross-referencing PR codes. if you tell me your VIN number, and the BCM you have now from the factory, I can tell you if you got the correct one. feel free to mask the last five digits if you want, I don't need those. actually, just post an autoscan so we see how the car is configured.

if you bought a brand new spare module from the dealer, it will come as VIRGIN. it means it does not contain some parameters that are indeed needed for correct functionality. ODIS will load everything while performing the Guided Function of replacing the module.
now the bad news. you CANNOT perform this so-called PARAMETERIZATION function with VCDS, it simply doesn't do it. besides ODIS, there is another tool to do that. that's why it is generally better, and cheaper, to buy a used control module around.

dealers are usually not skilled for retrofit because the VAG group strongly discourages them, they just want you to get everything when you buy the car. dealers tell you they cannot do it because they probably never did it before, but it's total bullshit, as the Guided Function in ODIS is not really complicated, usually just a matter of following the on-screen instructions and press NEXT a bunch of times.

so let's understand first if you got the right module part number. then you will need the dealer anyway, or anybody with ODIS ONLINE who knows what he's doing.

oh, and I totally forgot about COMPONENT PROTECTION. this is gonna blow your mind.

some modules in the car have this CP thing, which was created to control theft and the black market. basically you replace such module, the car network detects that you did, and CP kicks in. the module will enter a SAFE condition: it will still allow the car to be driven but some features will be disabled. talking about the BCM, it could be something like internal lights won't work, maybe wipers won't work. things like that.

depending on the module, the module replacement can cause CP to kick in for other modules as well. when I replaced the BCM in my car, CP was triggered for the BCM only. when I replaced the Gateway, it triggered CP in the Gateway itself, the BCM, the instruments cluster and the radio. so the car acted really funny.

the ONLY way to disable CP is to use ODIS with the online connection to Germany VAG servers. basically it matches the module to your VIN and unlocks it.

long story short, you will need ODIS anyway.

yes, it's THAT crazy.

That's because the Gateway is the CP "master" in your car.

I'm going to be pedantic here: That doesn't really "disable" it, it just re-matches the components. If it were "disabled", then you would have no further troubles with it when doing future component swaps.

This is not just a matter of having ODIS, but also having the proper credentials to access to the mothership's servers. If a stand-alone ODIS could "fix" component protection, then most likely VCDS could too. ;)

of course. I am trying to keep things simple for the OP who is for sure a newbie about this.

why did I see this last part of your post only after clicking on "reply with quote"?

Probably because I added it as an afterthought. I posted first part, then thought about what I had posted for a moment, and clicked Edit Post and added it. Then if you read my reply before I clicked Save, and clicked Reply With Quote after I clicked Save, that's exactly what would happen. :)

I definitely forgot about this, please forgive me. here's a screenshot from ETKA:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xnb1wjpwedm9joh/ETKA0003.PNG

as you can see, the S BCM is "also to be used for" Q and R.
variant Z0S is for PR code QQ0 "without add. lights (interior lighting)"
variant Z0T is for PR code QQ3 "interior ambient lighting and surround lighting"

both variants were superseded in 2016 by variant Z0W, so long story short, you need 5Q0 937 087 S Z0W. don't worry, I believe Z00 is ok too, maybe my ETKA is not 100% accurate because it doesn't have online access.

I also checked the AC panel, even if we didn't talk about it. you need 5GM 907 426 A WZU, hope you got that. here's a screenshot.

let me know if you need anything else.

No worries at all! Thank you for your help!

I think based on what the dealer told me that Z00 superseded the other model numbers so it does sound like I have the correct part luckily. Now I just need help figuring out the steps needed to swap the BCM modules with VAG-COM and or dealer tools.

I have that exact part.

let me know if you need anything else.

Right now it seems as if I have all of the correct parts, just not the knowledge on how to code them to my car. Do you have any guidance on that?

full car backup and AC panel swap was discussed at the beginning. do that first, it's easy.

go on youtube and find a video to understand how to remove the level that opens the hood. you'll never figure it out by yourself but once you see (and you do it once), it's easy. then you need to gain physical access to the BCM, it won't be very easy if you never did it before, and I don't really know how to detail it, try googling it, there might be videos on youtube. it's tight as hell, that is for sure.

1) disconnect the battery. if that was not clear, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY;
2) unplug the three BCM connectors. they all have a lever that needs to go top to bottom, but it won't move before pushing a small latch. the center connector has to travel outside and then down in the white plastic rails;
3) BCM can come out now, you need to swivel the bottom out of its holder, then BCM comes down vertically. yes, it's tight.
CHECK IF YOU HAVE WIRES IN THESE POSITIONS: 1, 2, 5 of connector A and 40, 43, 56 of connector C.
4) basically reverse the procedure and put in the new BCM. you are allowed to swear :)
5) re-connect the three plugs, do not swap A with C. I don't think the wires are long enough anyway.
6) connect battery. as soon as you switch the ignition on, CP will kick in.
7) set Long Coding of old BCM to the new one.
8) dump admap of new BCM and use WinMerge to compare to the old one. you need to manually set all adaptations to the old values, it will be A LOT, like hundreds. took me more than two hours. it's easier if you have a second computer with WinMerge, and another person that dictates you the adaptation and the value.
9) when you're finished, cycle ignition (wait a minute) and clear all errors. if you are left with CP errors only (in BCM, and maybe other modules), you're good.
10) drive to dealer, have CP removed and keyfobs taught. bring them all.

if you don't have the wires in those six positions, you need to buy the loom and install it. that will be another PITA. do the modules first. do not put back all the dash trims you removed, especially DO NOT PUT BACK the hood level, leave it in the door pocket and use it on the fly if you need to open the hood.

I am good all the way through step 6, but before I do any of it, how do I dump the admap of the old BCM? Is there a video somewhere on that?

A little confused on what is involved to finish step 8 too. Any walk throughs on this? I have searched but haven't found much.

Step 10, what do I specifically ask the dealer? Should I know the name of the system they need to use and what steps they need to complete?

step 6) as Uwe said, do that for EVERY module listed in the autoscan, then save the autoscan as well. that's your car's stock backup. you should already have done that. set all files as read only and make two copies, you never know. ah, security access is not needed when reading admaps.

step 8) I don't know how to say it easier. WinMerge is a program that will take both admaps and show you the differences. so load the NEW admap on the left and the OLD one on the right. you want to input values on the right.

something I forgot, it goes between steps 7) and 8). before you set all adaptations to your old values, your lights will all be misconfigured. I mean, when I did it, high beams were on all the time. that can drain the battery fast, so if you notice something similar, pull the light fuse or pull the connector from the headlight. it will trigger faults that will be easily cleared at the end.

step 10) tell the dealer "I replaced the BCM, I need Component Protection removed and all my keyfobs re-matched, please". if he doesn't know, acknowledge politely and exit. call VW USA and report the dealer for incompetence. go to another dealer. yo buddy, I really don't know what to say :P

I knew going into the whole project that I am in over my head, but I do learn fast. So, thank you so much for your help! I will post back when I find time to start the swap.

Also, One more question. When I first got the car I changed some settings using VAG-COM regarding door open chimes set to off versus on, seat belt chime disabled by switching some setting to something other than USA. When you mentioned I should do a full backup, I am concerned that I messed up by not doing one before I made those changes. Am I all good since everything is functioning as I would like now before I start the swap?

yes you're fine, that's every newbie's mistake. you just won't have a backup 100% as stock, but if you changed little things there is nothing to worry about.

for example, I also don't have a full stock backup, but I'll tell you what: any backup I make which has zero errors I consider as safe. actually the last backup is the best for me, it's not like I am gonna remove all the things I retrofitted if I sold the car.

[Applications]
[Controller Channel Map]
Controller Address = 09
Login or security access code: [Hopefully someone will recommend one]
Function: Adaptations
Output: CSV file
[Go]

Have yet to find the security code for the BCM which is 09? <<<EDIT>>> Wait... Found that 20103 seems to work on that BCM. <<<EDIT AGAIN>>> No, 20103 does not see to work. Still looking for something that grants access.

20103 did not work
11966 did not work
