Hello,

Two issues I'm stuck on with on my Touareg:

1: I don't know the coding table for the ABS/ESP stability control to disable the electronic power retardation feature in the ESP ALLRAD MK25E1 module. It's still originally coded 0008450.

Even with ESP disabled and centre lock locked, I'm still getting power delivery intervention in times of high power requirements. Pulling a trailer though sand I need wheel spin and power to the ground, electronic lateral differential lock intervention is manageable, but the power retardation isn't, all momentum is suddenly lost in this instance. I can crudely disable ABS with the fuse removal, but this also disables the centre lock.

2: The RNS510 is sticking on System Starting on the Media page, and is failing to boot the navigation map. After an hour or so or runtime, a three key < > * reboot has everything return to normal operation.

Do I have anything miscoded that isn't showing? There's no fault codes, also swapping the bluetooth modules and reinstalling the firmware 5238 has not improved this situation. I have a 3C8 035 730E bluetooth module installed, it works perfectly and is also wired for stereo music streaming, the Touareg Can Gateway just cannot communicate with it, so I use my Golf's gateway to communicate, but this bluetooth module was installed and used before this System Starting issue. It's also coded with the wifi off.

Thanks for any help, also the door malfunctions below were just because I'd removed and reinstalled the doors.

KIMIMIKE, loss of intermittent power.

Read a case study one time and noted you pulling a trailer in sand. Just a thought here, and off the cuff for 2019, but sometimes noise transmitted through a trailer hitch will cause knock sensors to intervene, anyway, just a thought as can really kick your butt.

The 7L6 hitch receiver is annoyingly noisy...oversized.. even with a clamp on it.

Thanks for the replies guys. In my case it’s ESP kicking in and reducing wheelspin by reducing engine power after it gives up dancing with the brakes for electronic differential control. On a straight face with all wheels spinning equally, it’s normally ok, but go up something obliquely, or in a curve and it thinks itself to death, perhaps the yaw sensor vs wheels speed vs ground speed and steering angle all come into play. It happens without pulling anything too. ESP off seems to just have a longer time delay before intervention, but it reduces the yaw sensor sensitivity.

On the RNS510 issue, it might just be the hard drive spindle seizing up in the cold? Once things are warmed up the Media page and GPS maps all come back. I’m still testing that theory before buying, cloning and installing a new 2.5” IDE drive.

Mines just a manually removable Westfalia, it’s been sublime. https://goo.gl/images/L5d6Rg
Didn’t feel like being lazy and installing the more expensive electrically retractable one.

I'm skeptical that it's the hitch that's causing the behavior in question.

For laughs, you could take a look at Adaptation Channel 90 in the ABS. I would suppose that the value there is a 1. If so, try changing it to 0. That should turn ESP off. However, I would also guess that this setting will not survive an ignition cycle. I'm also not sure whether this will kill the power reduction.

I'm not aware of any other way to accomplish what you're looking to do.

Thanks Uwe, I'll investigate that and see how I get on.

I can now confirm the HD in my RNS510 is packing in and why the Media page is waiting on System Starting... and Navigation maps are timing out and not loading.
Here's when it warmed up and running properly.

I think I've heard of people replacing then with SSDs...?

Yes. Impressive build quality in the RNS510, love the precision in the metalwork. I think anything will be faster than the 30GB 4200 Hitachi that’s currenty in it.
SSD should be quite vibration resilient, China has a few IDE SSD options. Will probably need IDE to SATA converter as well to format in FAT32 and clone.

Can You fit a adapter in there? I know people used SSD-s there with old PATA connector. No need for anything more then 40GB. Or do You store music on RNS-HDD? I found that rather annoying how slow copying was.

the first link shows the opposite of what you need. that is to use an old IDE hard drive on a SATA host. you want to use a SATA drive on a IDE host (RNS510).

the second is a boxed solution of the same thing I linked, except that you will get 32 GB instead of 128 GB for the same money. your choice :)

darkchina811 can you please tell me how you got the M.2 to IDE converter case to work in your RNS510? I’ve bought two of them on your recommendation.

In the RNS510, the IDE hard drive has a master/slave pairing with the DVD drive, if I install an old IDE hard drive, even a completely failed one, the DVD drive works. With the converter cases installed, the DVD drive isn’t detected by the RNS510’s operating system at all.
The issue will be how the jumper pins are wired within the converter, as these pins are an integral part of the RNS510’s connection.

Both converter cases do work with a computer, independent of the four jumper pins. I’ve tested them both via the IDE-SATA converter I’d also bought for cloning the drives.
Thanks

ehm... I don't have a RNS510, never seen one for real. honestly I just assumed it would work, sorry if I mislead you, it was not intentional.

so you are saying that it does not work even if you put the jumper the way it should be? that's odd.

No problem, I have solved the issue.

All 44 IDE pins including the jumper pins plug directly into the main logic board of the RNS510, so any jumpers on the drive need to be removed first. I’m presuming from all the faults I was getting, the Hard Drive IDE controller runs both the hard drive and the DVD drive. My guess is the DVD is the slave?
I bought a secondhand 60GB platter drive tonight from a shop for 30 dhms/£6, formatted it FAT32 Masterboot and just used a 5238 Firmware CD to reinstall the partitions. It’s sitting on the battery charger now with music installing via SD, I will load maps back on tomorrow, the dealer here has a DVD I can borrow.

I will think of some project that I can use two 128GB M.2 cards for. They could make for quite quick USB external drives.

glad you sorted it out. the hard drive is master and the DVD drive slave indeed, I can bet even without knowing the unit.

the 60 GB drive works fine if you're happy with it, I just believe going to solid state would be better in a moving car.

the M.2 drives will be amazing USB sticks :)

Correct, SSD would be more reliable than platter, but for the price and availability here, and for a known IDE controller, I’m not complaining.
A car is a suspended box and is designed for our squidgy mush, so the vibration will be there, but the shock loads will be far lower G than those received in a laptop being knocked around, well, depending on ones driving manners. I predict thermal stress will be the biggest issue in a car, the bearing was the failure point in mine.
The last platter lived for 10 years, maybe this new platter will live another 10? We’ll see.
