Hello all, new VCDS owner here.
I have the "Check AdBlue, no engine start in 450 miles" message on my Alhambra 7N. The story so far:
-I've had car about 6 months. In the first week of ownership the same happened and it went to dealer for software updates and came back happy and clear of that problem.
-Last week I had same countdown start again. "Check" not "Top Up" and starting much lower. I only had a cheap scanner at the time and noted codes P20EE and P229F. Stupidly I cleared them.
-AdBlue tank is full.
-I pulled Nox Sensor off as per code above, cleaned it (it didn't look bad) and put it back.
-I've worked out I stand no chance without VCDS so purchased!

As per other forum posts, I have tried:
Basic Settings IDE04567 Resetting of SCR tank level detection - completed OK
Basic Settings IDE04730 Reset SCR lock - completed OK
Read the UDS block for tank and it reports "Full".
Then tried:
Engine > Basic Settings >
[Reset learned values quant. meter. unit and press. contr. Valve], press [Go!] - completed OK
[Check of SCR efficiency], went through process, eventually reported "Aborted for Safety Reasons" about about 12 minutes.

I'd be very grateful for any thoughts on what I might try next, why it might be failing for safety reasons, and specifically some Advanced Measurement Blocks that can help prove that the sensor I cleaned is actually working or shed any more light on what might be causing the issues.
Another question is that I haven't found the front Nox sensor (if there is one!), I had assumed it was on top of the engine but now think that's the Lambda probe.

Ouch. With no fault codes under 01-Engine, combined with the fact that you've done all the Basic Settings, I'm scratching my head how/why this car is producing the "countdown to doom".

I haven't yet got [Check of SCR Efficiency] to complete. I tried again and during the test took the following screenshot

The efficiency reaches 0.80 at one point then tails off, and finishes off much lower than this. Can someone confirm that I should be getting some kind of reading from sensor 1, as I can't work out how it can compute efficiency if sensor 1 is coming back as zero! Still haven't found sensor 1 on the car too....!

Isn't this under warranty?

Sharan from 2011ish. Even goodwill is about to end on this car(7year).

We don't get extended warranties on emission systems or get free replacements of intake manifolds.

Sucks, but this is the way it is

Either faulty injector, faulty scr converter or nox sensor that doesn't measure Correctly.
Thank you. As original fault code (cleared) was for P229F for Nox Sensor that feels like most likely at this point. Anyone know any rough values for any given conditions that I can compare?
I guess I can also pull injector off and get car up to temperature and see what happens. Thanks again for help.

Usually the head of the urea injector where it usually explodes and atomizes needs a long good soaked kiss of lubricant and cleaners to loosen things up to get it to pump out of the tank.

I agree with the above suggestions and wouldn't want to overlook that sensor code but wanted to add, advanced measuring value [*IDE03386*] Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage may be helpful.

1.00 = Baseline (center)
Range = 0.90 to 1.10
> 1.00 = adding more reducing agent (example 1.02 = clogged injector, High DPF content, etc...)
< 1.00 = taking away reducing agent (example 0.95 = leaking injector, etc. . )

I believe Basic Settings [*IDE02636*] SCR metering quantity test would run the self-test so the measurement of adblue can be evaluated (with the injector removed) but our text doesn't match the new IDE scheme. In the event that it helps I'll post it:

- Read and understand information/warnings/safety instruction in the Factory Repair manual about working with and testing the DPF system. 

Using VCDS:
In [01-Engine]
- Select [Basic Settings-04]
- From the 'pull-down' menu
- Select [SCR metering quantity test]

Next select the following Advanced Measuring Values:
[Pressure sensor for reducing agent; measured pressure] = loc 429

Start the Basic Settings, watch the pressure reading in the measuring values, DPF system pressure range is [4.8bar to 5.2bar]

- Let the test run for 10 minutes
- Look for DPF leaks
- It maybe necessary to remove the N474-Reducing Agent Injector (use VAS6532/2) if the pressure is not reached or there is a suspicion the N474 is leaking.
- Use the VS6532 pressure gauge and adapters to check for pressure if the Measuring Value Block shows no or incorrect pressure.

I don't think the locations will be accurate but the text should be similar enough.

Thanks Dana will look at that shortly. Earlier I went for a drive with the following AMV's logged to CSV:
IDE00196:Engine oil temperature
IDE00406:Camshaft speed (RPM)
IDE03129:Reducing agent pump: activation
IDE03131:Reducing agent injector: activation
IDE04098:NOX Sensor
IDE05353:Measured NOx conversion

I was trying to determine whether it is sensor or injector causing me issues. The test ran with the the oil temp between 84 and 100.
So - Until Oil Temp reached 88.7 degrees, Nox sensor read 65535ppm then it sprang into life and read values between 0 and 1573 ppm average being in the 200's.
It did revert to 65535ppm for periods with no logical reason. I'm still suspicious about the sensor for this reason.
The Pump Activation read between 12 and 15% the whole time.
THe Injector Activation was zero most of the time, occasionally reading a value. Sometimes this correlated with a high ppm reading, sometimes not, sometimes when the sensor was reading 65535 it still activated.
The "Measured Nox Conversion" stayed at zero the entire time.
I don't know if this tells us anything more, but the Nox Sensor readings during the course of a drive seem odd to me. Ideally I'd test another similar car to compare and see if 65535 is reported at all.
I'll have a go at the suggestions from Dana later. Thanks again.

So, Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage: 1.00

Tried the SCR Metering test, with the following AMV's:
IDE03129 Reducing agent pump
IDE03130-ENG57549 Reducing agent purge valve
IDE03132 Pressure sensor for reducing agent

Purge valve starts at 1, reducing agent pump at 40%, with pressure at 6hPa
At a certain point in the test, the purge valve changes to 0, pump increases to 80%, pressure increases to 5018 hPa then dips back down to 6hPa again, with purge valve and pump returning to original settings.
This test seems to do one cycle of this then stop, reporting System OK. (I don't seem to have the option to run it for 10 minutes)
Should the pressure increase that much? Otherwise there don't seem to be many clues here.

Final observations of the evening!
Remembering that the fault has:
Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage: 1.00
Measured NOx conversion: 0.000
Calculated efficiency of NOx conversion: 0.849
Efficiency threshold of NOx conversion: 0.000

I have also noticed the following values:
IDE05356 Calculated NOx concentration behind turbocharger 0 ppm
IDE07526 Efficiency threshold of NOx conversion during short trips 0.597
IDE07527 Measured NOx conversion during short trips 0.493


Thoughts are
1) to achieve 0.849 efficiency most things must be basically working, confirming theories already suggested that sensors and/or injector have strong chance of being the issue. I wonder what this number has to reach to "pass".
2) I'm starting to think that "Measured Nox Conversion 0" is a red herring as a few reference scans in this forum have that too. I would also reason that "Measured Nox Conversion for short trips" shouldn't be higher than "Measured nox conversion".
3) The short trip conversion is not quite up to scratch either (0.493 when aiming at 0.597) which is consistent with it all slightly under performing.
4) "Calculated NOx concentration behind turbocharger 0 ppm" - this is either red herring, or quite concerning as this should surely be higher than Nox Sensor!

I think I've seen enough now to take a punt on the Nox Sensor so I'm ordering 2nd hand Nox Sensor with 1 yr guarantee, and will fit that and inspect injector while about it. I'll report back how it goes.
Final thing, I'm down to 400 miles now. Has anyone reached zero, and what happens, as it appears you need to be able to start car to run efficiency test once it all works?

-Last week I had same countdown start again. "Check" not "Top Up" and starting much lower. I only had a cheap scanner at the time and noted codes P20EE and P229F. Stupidly I cleared them.

That's likely where your issues come from. SCR codes MUST NOT be cleared and instead be properly investigated while those codes are present. Otherwise they do require a special test procedure which you may need to trigger now...

EA189 (Gen. 2):

- Make sure the Engine is HOT (not just warm, but HOT)
- Perform TWO 15 second throttle cut-off runs (i.e. drive 100 kph, get off the gas and let the engine brake the car for 15 seconds)
- Drive for 10 km at around 80-100 kph
- Perform ONE 15 seconds full throttle run and ONE 10 second throttle cut-off run directly after that
- Drive for 10 km at around 80-100 kph
- Perform ONE 15 seconds full throttle run and ONE 10 second throttle cut-off run directly after that

Do not connect a diagnostic tool during this process, make sure all NOx/AdBlue components are working just fine beforehand. Make sure the ECM has the latest SW/FW.


Ouch. With no fault codes under 01-Engine, combined with the fact that you've done all the Basic Settings, I'm scratching my head how/why this car is producing the "countdown to doom".

The counter is unrelated to any codes, it is the standard message if the tank is empty. Restarting is prohibited, once the measurement/calculation reaches zero and the AdBlue/DEF is actually refilled. With most VAG models, the warnings start at 2500 km remaining distance and are getting more excessive (100 km intervals, 50 km intervals, 10 km intervals, 5 km intervals) the lower you get. The actual measurement is done via an ultrasonic sensor in the tank, however once it has detected the tank has been filled up, it is primarily a calculated remaining distance based on the previous filling cycle. For example, if I drive my T6 heavily I get 5000 km for the next cycle, when I drive that cycle calmer I get up to 9000 km for the following cycle.

I suspect at that point the Basic Setting for "Reset SCR Lock" will get it started again, but I'm not 100% certain.

Correct, however don't count on it working (seen some where this failed) and there is no guarantee that it will be usable more than once. Personally, while testing the whole process, I have used 3 times in row and each "Reset SCR Lock" gives you 50 km remaining distance, in which you can restart the engine as much as you want. Once it hits zero again, you're back to a no-start.

I mioght be misunderstanding you here. Doesn't this message "CHECK" not "TOP UP" AdBlue appear with a much lower start mileage if the efficiency of the system falls below a given threshold? My AdBlue tank is full, and measuring blocks are reporting it as full, so don't think this message only appears if tank is empty. I had been under the assumption that once I get the Check SCR Efficiency Test to pass (it currently fails) this countdown message issue will be resolved.

That is still the stage I am at. As above it's failing the "Check SCR Efficiency" test and I'm still trying to work out for sure why, as I'm getting readings from Nox Sensor and seeing injector actuation. I've ordered a backup sensor and next plan is to remove/clean injector and run "SCR Metering Test" to check the injector is working. Any other thoughts to diagnose sensor or injector are most welcome. I really appreciate all the help.
