Mickey Mouse loves Audi too (Intermittent electrical and engine issues)!

    Hey everyone,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I've got a weird one here regarding our 2010, completely stock, AUDI A6 Avant quatro wagon. There have been no recent repairs or service with this car. After driving for several hours with no issues, all of a sudden while sitting idle in a parking lot, the engine starts running really rough, the EPC and ESC lights turn on and the car basically limps home. I ran a scan on the car (log file below with only the faults) and there are all of these "intermittent" issues going on with the engine, ABS, HVAC, etc. The most interesting faults are "Sunlight photo sensor - Open or short to ground - Intermittent" and the backup light bulb with the same intermittent faults. I have no issues starting the car as the starter seems to have plenty of power from the battery, but the engine does run terribly rough and there are all sorts of warning beeps about the EPC.

Is it possible that a mouse or some critter has chewed through a wiring harness somewhere? We have had mice in the engine compartment (they used the foam firewall to make a nest) but I have not found any wiring damage in the engine area. Is there a place in the wiring where the engine, ABS and HVAC are all bundled together? And if so, where might that be so I can take a look? Or, a neighbor told me to disconnect the battery, touch both leads together for 30 seconds and then reconnect and try again. Honestly, I'm a bit concerned about doing that, does that sound like a logical step in troubleshooting?

It definitely is an odd sight to see mouse traps sitting on top of the intake manifolds though.

I'm still a newbie at this so I hope I put enough detail, but if not, let me know and I'll post what I can. Thanks so much for your help and suggestions!

"Suddenly" they vacated the vin number?

Fuel system or false air leak.....doesn't appear to be rodent speculation as aforementioned.

Thanks for your suggestion, Jack! Oh, and as for the VIN, I misread the JPPSG and thought I was supposed to remove the last 6 digits of the VIN. Sorry about that and I can add the VIN if you need it.

Hello again, Jack. No problem with privacy. The VIN is:

    VIN: WAU8GCFB8AN065799

I checked the gas cap and it's on tight. We haven't filled the tank in some time (probably mid-October) and it is 3/4 tank on the gauge. The car is parked outside (no garage/carport) and we're recovering from a 1' of snow and freezing temperatures. Is it possible that perhaps there is water from condensation in the gas? I'm afraid to drive the car as I don't want to break anything but it does seem to rev smoothly above 2000 RPM. Thank you again for your help and expertise!

Put some fuel injection cleaner in tank and a shot glass of Marvel mystery oil to see if it helps.
Check oil sump for fuel contamination.

As mentioned by Jack, maybe a fuel trim issue, so study up on this:

With engine up to temp, see what MVB 032 and 033 show.

Auto-Scan, learn it, love it, live it... then check the fuses.

Runs smooth above 2,000, would suspect intake leak as now small leak is overcome by open manifold.

Always this time of year with all the ethanol things go to crap, as JACK stated maybe fuel pump giving up the ghost but does not align with running good above 2000, but is this 2,000 with no load just sitting in neutral, is a difference.

FWIW, and can't prove it but have been told moth balls in various areas deters rodents, again no personal experience, and also bounce laundry fabric, just a thought.

**UPDATE** Hello everyone, thanks so much for your input. I don't know what to say but yesterday morning, I took the A6 into town and it started up like a champ. There were no POST beeps or warnings on the console, just the MIL light was on. Before I left the house I had some seafoam that I added to the tank. I drove it about 30 miles, parked and restarted the car several times while running errands and the car had zero complaints. I purchased some MMO and added about 200ml to the tank then drove it for another 20 miles. When I got home, I cleared the MIL and then ran another autoscan which returned no codes. And after reviewing the original log, I'm embarrassed to admit that the electrical codes that showed the "open or direct to ground" messages were from August, when I changed the reverse lamps. I obviously got over excited then I initially took the logs and didn't check the date stamps. My bad. So thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.

I'm going to chalk this one up to bad fuel seeing that the gas station here has a bad track record. Not long ago, the station here "accidentally" filled the 87 regular tank with diesel and they basically broke 200+ cars so I don't doubt that they may have had condensation in the fuel 91 I use or something.

    Thanks again!
