I went to a show last weekend - the Auckland VW Owners Club annual Spring Jamboree.

Got second place in "Watercooled - Other" :D

In all honesty, I think there were only about 6 cars in the class, and the winner was an immaculate Passat R36 wagon, clean, shiney, polished and amazing... mine was unwashed, un-vacuumed, kids crap and car seats still inplace etc  I think it got the prize based purely on being weird :D

Not so cool:

I think I broke it...

R32 Towran :D

"Aquired" this caravan that I towed home. It was locked and still full of gear too, so fairly heavy. I like this style - the top pops up to creat headroom, but it's lower wind resistance when towing, although it is 2.3 metres wide (over 7'6").

It's brakes didn't work either, so the R32ran's 4 wheel ventilated discs (312mm/310mm) helped.

The torque of the R32 really shows itself while towing, 320 NM right through the mid rev range... plus you can keep revving if you want to be silly

Found a nice Spanish "Cometa" air rifle in there too!

So this happened recently...

Apparently my wife didn't approve of a "spare" Touran.... when she arrived home after it was delivered, she said she thought I was joking about buying it...

Anyway - I'm going to cut it in half and make the rear into a half-car trailer  It came with a towbar (That I'll have converted to a 2" receiver) AND GENUINE VW towing electrics... I think that means I can fit it to my R32ran, and the trailer stabilisation will work!!!

Always remember: When you ask the wife if it's OK to do some thing, and she says, "Do whatever the fuck you want!", you probably should not do that thing. :D

NOW you tell me!!!

Her actual answer was something like "Get the garage finished first!"... so I bought the Touran, now I'll wait for the garage to be finished, then get started on the trailer conversion.... legit!

The guys still have a little bit to do on the garage though:

It was only there for the day :( I could have "looked after it" overnight for him!

He did do some other work while he was here though.

I updated the R32ran towbar from a fixed unit, to a 2" receiver that my best mate welded up for me (He's a real welder!).

So I can fit the tongue for towing, but I'll make a bumper bar for the other "drivers" at work, trying to park.

I've ordered a hitch mounted spare tyre carrier too, because a spare tyre doesn't fit in a 7 seat Touran.

Fitting the tow hitch DID involve a little sacrifice:

6 stitches, an arterial bleeder; but no tendon damage!

FYI: don't trim the bumper with a knife... dumbass!

A 2" receiver makes it rather tempting to attach and/or try to tow things this vehicle really shouldn't.

FWIW, here in the US, virtually all hitches are receiver-style. VW sells 'em for vehicles that people might want to attach things to or two things with. For a Tiguan, a vehicle that's somewhat comparable to your Touran in terms of construction and heft, the only choice is a 1-1/4" receiver. If you want a 2" receiver, you need a Touareg. ;)

I know what you mean, Uwe!

Weirdly:

The original tow bar is rated for 1650 KG (3600 lbs), with the 75KG (165 lbs) tongue load. I'll stick to that!
Legally, here in NZ, I have to keep the total weight under 6000KG (13200 lbs) :D and the trailer must not exceed 3500KG (7700 lbs) :D

Our caravan is rumoured be be about 1350 KG (3000 lbs) loaded, and it's likely to be the heaviest thing. Anything heavier would be very short distances at very low speed. Honest ;)

Can you IMAGINE the R32 fuel "economy" with a big load on it

The tow bar itself may be rated for such and such but another thing is how much the particular vehicle model is rated to tow? This varies from engine to engine, with the 2.0 TDI usually being rated for a maximum of 1500kg on a Touran.

Yes, I can. A long time ago, we had a 2004 Touareg with the old-school (port-injected) petrol V8.

I just built new front struts in the dining room.

My wife came home and didn't say a single thing, not even an eye roll

I have trained her well!

I'm removing the spring spacers, and fitting Skoda Octavia Scout rear springs, and Tiguan front springs, to give me roughly the same height, but with a better ride and proper spring rates.

I've got the rears in, and the ride is much better, but also firmer somehow - I guess the spring rate combined with the HD shocks (that I already fitted about 6 months ago).

In case someone else wants to lift their R32 Touran :D:

Front Springs: Lesjofors 4095089 (VW 5N0411105AA)
Front Shocks: Sachs 317-575
Rear Springs: Lesjofors 4285730 (VW 1K0511115CT)
Rear Shocks: Sachs 400-019
