Checked the battery terminal voltage when engine running?

Checked the connections to the alternator?

Sounds like the alternator voltage regulator isn't working, yet the Auto-Scan shows a sensible battery voltage of 13.7/13.8V - was this with engine running or just ignition on?

battery was giving off steam and in almost a state of thermal runaway, I'm exhausted from trying to diagnose the issues that keep popping up... cn anyone provide me with some guidance.
Do you have evidence of actual overcharging, as in a sustained >= ~15V measurement at the battery with a multimeter?

Sometimes batteries die of natural causes, and sometimes they do it ungracefully.

+1 on all of the above. Voltage looks normal for a car that's either running, or on a charger. Which is it?

I was driving, i noticed that the Rpms were at about 1.000 like it was charging the battery if I had low voltage. Next I noticed the smell from the battery acid and then my dash beeped 3 times and the speedometer dropped to 0 and then jumped back up to my actual speed. Plugged in The cable and laptop while still driving and this is the result. Right after I pulled this Cable gave me a red light immediatly unplugged it and parked. From the time the smell started to park is about 3 minutes.

As soon as I got home I pulled the battery because it was leaking and swelling.

I’m going to check all my wiring and connections today to verify I don’t have a shirt to ground etc. I’m more than likely going to get a new battery and I’d like to verify the coding for the cent elec last 8-10 bytes with a good reference scan. This car was borrowed for about 7 months while I was deployed and since I’ve had so many gremlins since I’m concerned he tweaked shit he shouldn’t have since I know he messed with some of the comfort features.

And just prior to this the vehicle was torn apart for about 2 weeks and the battery was low when I installed it. Could the age combined with the abuse of charging it back up and manintenance on the vehicle have just killed it? I’m sure I didn’t follow VW procedures when I removed and reinstalled it.

With the current evidence of a sensible battery voltage, and the chequered history of the car I would go for a new battery.

AFAIK the only component on a car that can cause overvoltage is the alternator, and there's no evidence of that.

Has the car ever been jump started? If so was a normal car jump starter used or a truck one? I've seen BIG problems caused in ports when cars have been jump started with a truck (28V!) jump starter...

Hello,

And just prior to this the vehicle was torn apart for about 2 weeks and the battery was low when I installed it. Could the age combined with the abuse of charging it back up and manintenance on the vehicle have just killed it? I’m sure I didn’t follow VW procedures when I removed and reinstalled it.

You do have a fault code in the [03-ABS Brakes] that would indicate there was at one point in time an 'over voltage' condition.

00668 - Supply Voltage Terminal 30
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

To answer the question about the battery, was it "killed"?, maybe?

Based on the VIN number, the build date is 11/2014, so if this is the original battery, it 4+ years old, I have seen less than 4 year old batteries fail.
Any abnormal stress on a battery can cause it have a shortened life, just really depends on the battery, type and life it has lived.
As per the parts catalog, the original battery was rated at [280 A (60 Ah)] part number: [000-915-105-DE]

You can take the battery to an auto-parts store to have it tested, many store use modern test equipment to help verify the overall battery condition.

After you figured out the battery condition, I would suggest to verify actual voltage at the battery, with the vehicle running, using a decent volt meter. If that is okay, then check the voltage drop from the alternator (+) terminal to the battery's (+) terminal while loading the charging system by turning on large electrical consumers.
You should no more than a 0.5 volt voltage drop volts and charging voltage should not exceed 14.4 volts.

By the way, I have replaced failed voltage regulators in alternators for over charging problems before with success. PartsLink24.com shows the regulator is available separately [04C 903 803].

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Thank you for the outstanding info I really appreciate it. Between the oil pressure issue which I finally solved and now this I’m about done. I’ll follow your reccomendations and see where I’m at. My instinct is pushing me to the voltage regulator also based on recent data I don’t have available right now. Could you tell me, the reference scan for a 2015 Passat 1.8T s/5M such as the one in the ref scan forum it should be about identical with a few exception(lighting) to the 2015 wolfsburg based on standard features etc right?

Bad cell, hoping that’s all that was wrong. I shot every wire I could today to verify I didn’t have any shorts to ground and breaks and all is good. Hopefully it stays that way.

Yes but were any tracks poor in the ability to carry a load such as a poor ground?
