Hi,

After stalking the forums on and off for a while I can't find an issue I have with a 2010 2E 2.5 crafter.

Due to a valve head dropping and destroying the engine, I have fitted a replacement block and head using all the other components except for the injector that was damaged at the time.

Now the problem is it seems the injectors are not operating when trying to start, I made sure they all went back into the cylinder number they came from, programmed in the replacement one as per the code on it.

The fuel rail pressure is okay.

One in every 5 or 6 turns of the key the engine sounds like it is trying to start for a couple of seconds then nothing.

I have checked and checked again the engine timing, I know that is spot on.

I did have a code pop up once saying there was an intermittent fault with the crankshaft sensor, thats now changed and I no longer get that error.

I came to the conclusion that the injectors are not operating because after trying to start it the other day, I pulled the injectors out and they were dry.

Any help on this will be appreciated, I won't see the van until the weekend, so any suggestions of try this, or that, will not happen until Saturday, if I workout out I let you know.

Thanks,
Mark

Looks like the ECU itself has no idea why this van won't start -- no fault codes at all. That means you're likely going to have to trouble-shoot this using more traditional, basic methods.

Hi Uwe,

I was hoping someone would say they had a similar problem and it was....
It's so annoying the way technology has moved on, it was going back to basics that confirmed to me the injectors were not letting fuel through.
I might have to get someone in to have a look at it, I've no idea why the injectors won't operate or how to electrically test/check them in operation as VCDS does not have as many functions available for the crafter as it does for a golf for example.

Uwe, were or are you the electricians forum?

I thought I had posted this before but:
"The fuel rail pressure is okay." What is the actual rail pressure?
Regards HMC

I thought I had a log of it, I'm sure it was around 33000kPa (thats if I was looking at the correct reading)
I will check and do a log of it at the weekend.

Quick update.

I tested the injector wiring with Noid lights, the lights flashes only when the van attempts to start when turning over, otherwise theres no light when its turning over on all injectors.

Is this leading to a failing ECM?
Is there a "known" failure that anyone knows of?

Sounds like some other sensor is telling the ECM that the conditions are wrong so it doesn't energise the injectors.

I have had P0321 engine speed sensor pop up, but not all the time, I can clear the code wind it over a few times without it returning. I replaced the crankshaft sensor thinking that was at fault at one point.
It didn't make a difference though.

Hi mark did you eventually get to the bottom of this? I’m literally having the same issue as you I rebuild my 08 crafter 2.5 BJK after I bought it with an engine problem which turned out to be exactly the same issue you have just described (cylinder 5 valve failure) I’ve rebuilt the engine taking extra care in building everything back up which I know to be fine ie timing etc the van fired up after building oil pressure almost first crack and ran okay. After turning it off to continue building the van back up I left it over night and come back to it the following day and now it will not start. I did have a cam sensor fault which I know to not be a problem after replacing with a new one and doing various checks on wiring etc. just wondered if anyone could help further or if anyone has had any similar issues with the 2.5tdi crafter engines.
