Dual climate control - temperature not moving

Hi all

I have a 2014 A3, UK so right hand drive. The passenger side is cold. No fault codes. Coolant is a solid 91 degrees according to VCDS value.

I checked values with both sides set at 22:

Left front temperature = 15
Right front temperature = 22
Last customer setting - left specified temperature = 22
Last customer setting - right specified temperature = 15

Two questions:

How is it that the left vent corresponds to the right dial and vice versa?

Why is the right specified temperature stuck at 15 - do these dials have potentiometers?

If you turn the dials, values must go up or down... check also the value of the flaps (they should change also)... When heater is set to max. and coolant is at 90 degrees, there should be coming hot air from the vents and values must go up... if not, and flaps work prefect, the heater radiator is full of stuff that shouldn't be there!

Hi Mari

The left/right dial/vent issue seems to have sorted itself out, but I’m still left with the problem of the passenger side giving cold air even when it’s set to 28. The driver side works normal hot and cold. I guess as the driver side can go hot then the heater matrix is ok.

I will check again the flap values for the passenger side and report back.

I did some more diagnostics today. With the engine running I logged the below info. Looks a bit messy but you can see right vent got upto 34 and left vent upto 17. The right hand side is quite warm no?

With the engine off the left side could get warmer - upto 24 but no further when the right side carried onto 36 with climate on HI. I did notice the flaps were delayed on the left side.

I did the adapation thing and with glovebox out I could see the mixer arm moving back and forth.

The heater matrix was hot, I measured the in and out pipe with an infrared thermometer and with coolant at 70 degrees, the top hose was 65 and bottom hose was 55. 10 degrees cooler coming out than going in, but hot enough to provide hot air into the cabin.

I am unsure of the make-up of the heater matrix/ core - is it possible something has partially blocked passenger side feed without affecting driver side?

I also wondered about the mixer flap inside the heater system not being tight on the motor, but it does switch between cold and warm air with engine off so it must be moving. I don't know how flap values are measured - at the flap or the motor?

The third alternative is an air lock. I sometimes get coolant leaking out of the hole under the expansion tank. It's minimal and random, though I suspect it happens under heavy load. System has been pressure tested - twice - and no leaks, so no air getting in.

Air lock, mixer flap, blocked core..... what is most likely?
