I would like to retrofit new look and bigger screen to my MIB2 (Golf 7 2016). I have Composition Media, with NO voice control and NO navigation.

I have found these two part numbers with ETKA, they look pretty identical but they have different buttons, as follows:

5G6919605 RADIO MEDIA PHONE MUTE SETUP SOUND CAR MENU
5G6919605A RADIO MEDIA PHONE VOICE APP SOUND CAR MENU

I think the indicated part number based on the car's PR codes would be the A revision, but I would like to install the other one, based on this train of thought:

1) I have the MUTE button now on the older screen style and find myself to use it quite often;
2) I do NOT have voice commands enabled so I couldn't care less about the VOICE button;
3) I almost never use the App Connect feature so I couldn't care less about the APP button.

does anybody know if both screens would work with the head unit?

I am also having a hard time in finding the part number for what would be the new dash trim that surrounds the screen and the central air vents. It needs to be the "shiny/gloss black" finish.

whether or not they fit your composition media I have no idea, but I do know that both of these displays are interchangeable.
5G6919605 comes on non nav units
5G6919605A comes on nav units, but navigation button is in the menu, its not physical, hence interchangeability, tested 100%

I found an advertising online where they sell the 5G6919605 display together with head unit same part number I have, from a wrecked car.

So compatibility is guaranteed now :)

update/bad news :(

the display came in today. took me a while to remove the dash trim, it always looks stupid easy on the Youtube videos, then when I have to do it myself it's always a pain, and I managed to break some clips (of course).

anyway, I put the bigger display in and the screen stays black, it does not show anything. buttons work, even the touch screen works, there is just no image.

a fault code is logged as follows:

Code:
Thursday,25,October,2018,17:31:34:06888

do I maybe just need a trip to the dealer and they have to activate something?

now I put back the stock display, the error code cleared out and everything works just fine.

That error has nothing to do with display not working. There are guides in this forum how to clear that. It's indicative error only when you change something on the MIB unit it triggers that error. Only meaning is that you should take the car to a dealer who "calculates" the necessary clearing code online. Easy enough to calculate yourself with the tools found behind the links on this forum. Just search the forum with that error.

ok let's forget about the SVM thing for a moment, and follow my train of thought.

some people tells me that my 2016 head unit video output can only drive the small display, and not the bigger one.
however, if I go to ETKA and search parts for a 2017 car, it specifies the bigger screen, the one I bought, and the SAME HEAD UNIT.
(I had done the search before, I wouldn't have bought the screen otherwise).

http://www.recsoparts.nl/Webwinkel-...dium=cpc-marktplaats&utm_campaign=marktplaats

this is the link where they sell the same head unit together with the bigger screen.
I just noticed lately that that head unit has SW version 0753 while mine has 0744, while HW versions are both 710.
so I wonder... maybe the head unit just needs SW upgrade (hence why the SVM error)?

Well I think your research is not correct.

I looked at ETKA as well and 5G6 display unit is NOT compatible with your head unit. For your composition media head unit 3Q0035824B, only 3Q0 display's are supported and max size you can go is 6.5". 8" screens are for 5G0 head units. 5G0 units are Discover Pro which support 8" display.

Composition media and discover media which are also know as MIBx std, only support the smaller screen. If you want bigger screen, you also need to upgrade your head unit to MIBx HIGH.

And that same applies across the VAG range on it's brands, so not just Golf.

And I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

With Discover Pro I know this
5G0 035 020 for example working with Old screen (not touch sreen)
3G0 035 020 working with new touch screen (5G6 919 605B - dont mix it with 5G6 919 605A - this one is for basic unit - no NAV button )
5NA 035 020 working with biggest touch screen 5G6 919 606

biggest Touch screen is GEN 2.5 - easy to find that in Etka
5G6 Touch screen is GEN 2
Non touch screen is GEN 1

Some Discovery media with NAV also working with Non Touch screen from Discovery Pro

Don't be sorry, if that's what it is, it is not your fault. anyway, I am getting confused.

my ETKA is not online so I cannot search by VIN, but it is updated constantly so I assumed for a decent accuracy. I usually cross-reference PR codes when I look for a part number.

I am gonna attach two screenshots from a MY2018 Golf, where it says that the 5G6 919 605 display is for Composition Media and where it states 3Q0 035 824 B as one of the possible main units.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0j1hccyeat74dq9/ETKA01.png
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i15w1r6b6mah0hg/ETKA02.png

also, if you buy the car today, with Composition Media it comes standard with 8" display (although it will probably be the 5G6 919 605 A with APP button).

if I need to replace the head unit, I can consider it, but I want to locate the part number for a Composition Media. I am not interested into any Discover with navigation features.

You're right. I took another look and from 2017 onwards 3Q0 035 824 B actually has 5G6 919 605 A so in fact you should be good to go. I eventually looked for 2015 Golf what you have and that had completely different part compatibility list.
