I am attempting to retrofit a MK3 TTRS steering wheel, with FULL functionality into my Pre Face Lift, S3 8V. This is just the beginning of what will be a full retrofit of the Virtual Cockpit and MIB2 system with CarPlay enabled.

The updated steering wheel is necessary to have access to the "VIEW" button, to change display settings on the VC.

I will pre-face this by saying that I haven't found another thread with a car in the US, that has been capable of retrofitting the VC, or even attempted. I know there are a few guys in EU that have done this, and now MK7 Active Display retrofits are popping up here in the US as well. I have seen a couple of people that have retrofitted the TTRS wheel into the MQB cars with only partial functions. I am hoping that we can have the wheel work 100%.

My first challenge was to find a MIB2 Unit that could have NAR maps installed, and them work correctly, and also have CarPlay. Sirius and DAB (Digital Radio) aren't really a huge concern of mine. I created a list of part numbers of MIB2 units from US MQB cars with Parts Link. Unfortunately with it only being around for a couple of years so far, the cheapest NAR MIB2 unit I could find was still $4k +. This simply is not an option due to the total cost that the project would come to. After speaking with multiple companies over sea, I ended up working with APG in Poland who specializes in retrofitting MIB/Clusters.

They say they are able to source me a MIB2 unit, with NAR maps installed, CarPlay enabled, Sirius, and DAB. For those not familiar, Audi and VW now uses SwaP codes to unlock these features on cars that wish to upgrade. After researching, even though my S3 came with NAV, it is not the Google Maps style of Nav on the new cars. My VIN also isn't eligible for the CarPlay FEC code due to it not being available during my production or MIB1. It seemed as though my only option was to get an unlocked unit.

And here we are, at the beginning of this long road. I will say again, I am not sure that the VC will work 100% but I want to get it as close as possible and have this serve as the guide to help people who wish to do this in the future.

Parts that have been ordered so far:

-TTRS Steering wheel with airbag and harness
-LCD Instrument Cluster: 8V0-920-790-A
-MIB 2 Unit: 8V1-035-035 (There are multiple part numbers for this, depending on features and it is region specific)
-LCD Trim: 8V0-857-115
-HSD and MOST cables to run from the back of the MIB2 to the LCD
-Adapter harness for Cluster (Original is 18 pin, new cluster is 32 pin)
-Bracket for mounting LCD
-USB port for CarPlay and wiring

While we wait for the VC parts to arrive, the steering wheel needs to be installed.

Plug and play does work with the new steering wheel. The airbag connectors are different, but can easily be swapped. Both airbags are however, 1 stage airbags.

Here is where I ask for the first bit of help. The S3/A3 has a clockspring F350, separate from the the Steering Column Control Module J527. The TTRS using a 1 piece design that houses the clockspring, wiper stalk, and cruise control stalk. Here is the wiring layout for the yellow 12 pin connector on the clockspring from both steering wheels.

S3:

Pin 1:
Pin 2:
Pin 3: Black wire, Ground for N95 Igniter
Pin 4: Green wire, Power for N95 Igniter
Pin 5:
Pin 6:
Pin 7: Brown wire, Ground Connection that also goes to the Horn, and pin 3 of T4 connector on steering wheel.
Pin 8: Blue wire, Power for horn function, constant B+
Pin 9: Purple wire, LIN Bus, goes to Pin 1 of T4 on steering wheel.
Pin 10: White wire, constant B+ for steering wheel, goes to Pin 2 of T4 on steering wheel.
Pin 11: (Has pin on Clockspring, but no wire from steering wheel)
Pin 12:

TTRS:

Pin 1: Gray wire, goes to Pin 2 of T4 connector for Start/Stop and Drive Select Buttons (Unknown Function)
Pin 2: Light gray wire, goes to Pin 1 of T4 connector for Start/Stop and Drive Select Buttons (Unknown Function)
Pin 3: Black wire, Ground for N95 Igniter
Pin 4: Green wire, Power for N95 Igniter
Pin 5:
Pin 6:
Pin 7:
Pin 8: Brown wire, Ground Connection that also goes to the Horn, and pin 3 of T6 connector on steering wheel.
Pin 9: Purple wire, LIN Bus, goes to Pin 1 of T6 on steering wheel.
Pin 10: Red wire, constant B+ for steering wheel, goes to Pin 2 of T6 on steering wheel.
Pin 11: Gray w/ Red Stripe wire, goes to Pin 3 of T4 connector for Start/Stop and Drive Select Buttons
Pin 12:

I was able to get basic functions working on the wheel. 80% of the buttons, the lights, and the horn.
Using the harness from the TTRS wheel:

Move the brown wire from Pin 8 to Pin 7. Its that simple.

This gives you Purple, Red, and Brown on the T6 Connector at the top of the wheel. This provides all the basic functions.

The wheel has a T4 connector with 3 wires for the Start/ Stop and Drive select Buttons. Only 3 wires. The S3 clockspring only has 2 remaining pins though.
Pin 8, and Pin 11. Both of which have B+ when the key is on, and again, I am left with 3 wires for those two buttons.

Are these wires Power, Ground, and LIN?
Signal, signal, and ground?

The wiring diagram is very vague and only has the wires listed as black. No colors are listed. Another fun fact, is the Start/Stop button currently also activates the horn

Here is the new harness once adjusted. Note, there is 1 gray Power wire going to the T4 connector at this time. I am unsure of the purpose of this wire at this time.

And here is a photo of the wheel installed with no airbag. You can see the clockspring with 2 pins on the top row, and 5 on the bottom, as well as the T6 connector above it.

And here is the T4 connector that is simply for the Start / Stop and Drive Select Buttons.

And for reference, here is the wiring diagram for the S3 followed by the diagram for the TTRS. If anyone would like to chime in and help solve this, that would be great. You can see all the black wires that are built within the TTRS wheel in the 3rd and 4th photo.

There will be more updates as this progresses, and as parts arrive for the MIB and Virtual Cockpit! Any info, help, tips, etc, are greatly appreciated! I look forward to seeing this progress!

Nice retrofit!

Did you have drive select on your car before you started the retrofit? Reason I'm asking is that it's a SWAP function in MQB cars and requires you to buy the kit from Audi aftersales, or get someone with tools and skills to hack the FeC into your car. And I'm not exactly sure if it's available for Audi as aftersale part. For VW it is, but not for Skoda or Seat. Audi, don't know for sure.

I do have Drive Select as well as Kessy and Push Button Start. I feel that it has to be possible to get both of these buttons working properly.

Unfortunately the wiring diagram isn't very specific as to what the 3 wires are, that control those two buttons on the wheel.

If someone could attempt to help me figure out what these 3 wires could be, that would be excellent.

They say they are all black, but in fact we have a Gray, White, and Gray/Red Stripe wire. All 3 of them go to the Push Start/Drive Select Buttons.

IMG_3837_zpsnujqurrk.jpg

On the S3, the Push Button start goes via 2 wires straight to J764 Steering Column Electronics, and then it is sent via CAN to the J518 Access Start Module.

IMG_3838_zpsqhso41k2.jpg

IMG_3839_zpsgphoh3ot.jpg

On the TTRS, which the wheel is from, there are 2 wires, same color as the Push Button on the S3, that go from the J527 Steering Colum Module/Clockspring, right to the J518 Access Start Module.

Another thing:
Are you certain that TT SWCM supports DriveSelect input?

One thing i noticed from a TTRS scan is that Byte 1 Bit 6 is enabled on this car. This would set Your coding to: A258

I have reached out to that company to see if they make the adapter harness for a MQB based car.

The TTRS SWCM does support DriveSelect from the steering wheel as this is the car the wheel came from, and there is no other button in the vehicle to toggle this other than the MMI. If I am understanding your question correctly.

I also know that my SWCM in the S3 can support DriveSelect through the steering wheel. You can adjust what you want the * button to do, and I currently have that button set to adjust DriveSelect. Seems silly that one button on the wheel will send the signal, but the dedicated button will not.

Nope, what i meant was does Your S3 SWCM support dedicated button for Drive Select and Start/Stop.

Programming * buttons do do whatever function is most likely stored in BCM/CAN/CLUSTER or MIB. A 2018 TT Coupe also has * button and can be programmed. But this is universal button and it just sends out canbus signal that this button was pressed. Defining function for button is stored somewhere else.

I would suggest trying out the coding.

Best,

My current SWCM does not. I have 7 pins in total. 2 for the airbag, 30, 31, and Lin for the SW, 1 pin for the horn, and 1 unused pin that has constant 15 power.

I was interested if some how I could trigger the * button, by pressing the Drive Select button. Wiring them together somehow.

I do know that I am going to have to run another wire in my clockspring, or have some sort of module that can interpret the signal in the wheel and send it through.

I will adjust my coding to to A258 though and see if we have any changes.

Thanks!

Still waiting on the my cluster and MIB2 to arrive, so I am getting all of the wiring and additional parts sorted out.

I have created a chart for the wiring changes needed to go to the virtual cluster, and a full parts list that is needed.

Updates on the project:

MIB2, Virtual Cluster, CarPlay kit, and all associated wiring has arrived.

The MIB2 was simply plug and play. It was properly coded and prepared for my vehicle, with USA Maps installed, thanks to APG in Poland. This has been one of the most amazing companies I've ever worked with. They have an incredible amount of knowledge, email back within 24 hours or less, and provided updates every step of the process.

The next thing was to install the cluster. There was quite a bit of dash material to remove. You can cut the mounting tabs off the dash where the old cluster mounts if you wish, to make more room. The new cluster bezel will attach directly to the new cluster. The metal bracket that was ordered is attached to the bottom of the new cluster, and the second part is mounted to the dash behind it. It then has 2 screws that go in it backwards, with little rubber caps. This is what the cluster leans up against, while being attached to the top of the steering column.

Here is a photo before any cutting was performed

IMG_6279_zpstabvr6km.jpg

And here is after the cutting was completed.

IMG_8160_zpsigmssuow.jpg

This is the metal mounting bracket that goes behind the cluster.

IMG_4617_zps3lvyo8gj.jpg

With all of this, I ran the Optic cable and the Infotainment cable from the MIB2 in the glove box, to the back of the cluster. I then connected the adapter to take the instrument cluster harness from an 18 pin to 32 pin, as pictured in previous posts.

The cluster fired up in SAFE mode obviously. You have to use ODIS to remove Component Protection and adapt the vehicle keys.

IMG_4481_zpsyskvfv4f.jpg

Everything was then in German and KM.

IMG_4482_zpsu30302es.jpg

After going in with VCDS, the mileage has to be set and the Variant Selection has to be set all before the cluster reaches 100km. Once you past that point, the cluster can not be changed. So all of you that want the 1 center dial like on the S3, RS3, S4, etc, it has to be done when the cluster is new.

I coded it to MPH, 12 hour clock, S3 displays, no seat belt warning, etc. I also was able to set it to function with the indirect TPMS. I was worried about this as I believe most of the newer cars with the VC have direct TPMS. All of the basic settings have to be set for the ABS module again after install as well, otherwise the traction control, ABS, Parking Brake, and TPMS lights will remain on.

Another thing to note, is the upper steering column trim is also different between the clusters. You have to cut the two apart and combine the back part of the new one, with the front part of the old one. The new trim, that attaches behind the steering wheel, is curved where it meets the back of the steering wheel. I just reused the old part for this.

I have to say it's quite impressive retrofit. The digital speedo looks absolutely amazing!

Thanks man!

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Also surprised that it all worked 100%.

What a retrofit very nice! I have also retrofit a lot of this, but never get the dials in middle working. The "variant selection 1" needs to be set to active right when the cluster is new?

To get the 1 center dial like the S3, S4, etc, yes it has to be set when the cluster has less than 100km on it.

Also, if you set the mileage to your cluster to what the vehicle has on it first, then you also can’t change the dials. Even if you haven’t driven anywhere yet.

Ok so first you have to set the dials and then mileage etc?
