2007 Audi S8 Trailer Module fitment

2007 Audi S8

I have swapped over a factory towbar and trailer module from a donor car to mine.

I've changed the coding in level control, parking aid, rear veiw camera, and updated the Gateway Installation list

But the coding for the Auto Distance Control, and engine control modules there was no coding help pop up bubble so wanted to know how to proceed

Ok, thanks, done all that. My charger is struggling to keep up its only 5amp.

I can make all of the trailer lights go with the output tests, but they will not work otherwise.

I suspect it has to do with how I connected the Canbus wires.
The donor car Canbus wires for trailer module go all the way up to the front of the car, but I just solder T joined into the same color Canbus wires that go to the rear conveinience module.
I was reading the Westfalia wiring fitting instructions and they seem to get into the Canbus network at this same point.
Would anyone have the wiring diagram for the westfalia retrofit kit to see exactly how this should be done?

Yeah, a 5A charger is inadequate for a 4E A8. But if that's all you've got, leave ignition off, charge battery fully, then turn ignition on and do what you need to do with charger still connected, and don't dawdle!

The A8 4E used star typology for the CAN bus networks with the wires from each module terminating at the CAN connecting blocks, they are the purple connectors above each fuse bank either side of the dash. That's why the trailer module went all the way up to the front of the donor car. However, it will still work as you've wired it so I don't see a problem.

Yes, just tried that now, still not working. I didn't think you would need to do that every time you connect the trailer. Shouldn't it just recognise the trailer when wiring connected?

Anyway, just had a thought, the trailer is all LED lights which sometimes can cause a warning on dash on other cars, but should still work right?

It should recognise the trailer once it's connected, that's the beauty of the OEM module, but worth a try.

As you said that output tests worked fine. So I don't see LEDs being a problem here or the CAN wiring. Head scratching time!

Where did you pick up the Terminal 15 from for the trailer module? There's not many at the rear of the A8

Probably time to re check the wiring once again. Don't know how much the Westfalia differs from the factory wiring.

Thanks for the wiring diagrams. I took a break from the wiring today and got the towbar fitted up.

The terminal 15 wire from trailer module is Black/yellow and so I had connected it to another wire of the same colour that comes from the relay/fuse box above the battery.

Tomorrow I will try changing that over to the black wire No.21 on the 32 pin connector of the rear convenience control unit above the battery.

B4 (blue)from trailer module is connected to another blue wire No.19 on the 32 pin connector of rear convenience control unit.

I would have assumed the trailer module got its commands via CAN. I guess that's not the case and it could be the wires to B3 and B4 from J104 & J393 that make it work. J393 does control all of the rear lights after all. Interesting stuff.

Haven't had any luck getting the trailer lights to work, apart from with the output tests in the Trailer Control Unit.

The only thing I see is your trailer module is currently coded 0001001, try 0000001 because I think you don't have rear seat entertainment. This bit alters the behaviour of Terminal 30. Worth a try.

Ok, I had tried both, but didn't realise that they meant for the rear seat entertainment. The coding helper said something like MMI display active or not active, which I thought they were talking about the main MMI screen.
Anyway, I was talking to a mate who is an auto electrician and he mentioned that it could just be the LED lights not activating the trailer module, even though the lights will work when doing output tests.
So he gave me his trailer lights test rig to try (with normal bulbs)
All works perfectly, so will be putting some resistors on the trailer in the next few days.
Appreciate the help.

Glad it all works. The trailer module does check the trailer lights function capability, so you would have though it would give a bulb error due to the LEDs. Now we all know it doesn't!
