The recent dataset update

Just a placeholder for more information about my experience with VCDS Mobile and the latest dataset update.

1. 30 MB, using VCDS Mobile, it takes a while over a slow network (e.g. tethering). When interrupted, verification runs nevertheless and hangs. After successful download, extraction takes a while, too.
2. An ASAM update is required, 990 KB. After successful download and verification, extractions gets stuck at file 32/64 or 36/64. Interface hangs (LEDs stuck at random color) and needs to be power-cycled.
3. ROD update via VCDS Desktop succeeds and getting MVB via VCDS Mobile works fine in general.
4. Values selected in VCDS Mobile HUDs have changed. HUDs have to be rebuilt, but are functional (as before).
5. Some values (e.g. IDE08985,AC line current: actual val and IDE08986,AC line voltage: actual val) are not decoded correctly.
6. Selecting OBDII too quickly after reading from other units causes a car connection timeout. This does not happen when switching more slowly, e.g. until the "Installed" list is fully available in the main Select screen.

With all the retries and hangs and waits I didn't have time to do an AutoScan and get version info and updated channel maps. It's on my list ...

There is little to report as my HN is currently an OBD-II interface only.
I decided to try and resolve my IDE08985 and IDE08986 value decoding issue by clearing Dataset Cache and ROD Files, then downloading any current ASAM files.
1) VCDS Mobile AutoScan reports missing ASAM as expected, but once all (949KB) is downloaded and verified, it stops after extracting some files and complains about the Internet connection.
2) VCDS Mobile Check for Updates reports "Internal server error. Please try again."
3) Selecting individual controller units, ASAM files are looked up, but not found (e.g. 01 - Engine), or, for other units (e.g. C6 - Battery Charger), a download is found but either stalls at 0% or the page does not redirect after the update is shown as finished. ASAM data is not available in any case.
4) Using VCIConfig V2.242 (18.9), ROD updates are downloaded, extracted and written to SD (successfully), but after the update, VCDS "Test" reports "The HEX-NET interface is busy talking to VCDS-Cloud. Please try again in a few seconds". This behavior does not change over time (hours). It is also the same via USB or NET. VCIConfig is able to connect and control the interface anyway and Update reports "You are up to date." Nevertheless, for VCDS Mobile, ASAM data is still not available.

To get the latest ASAM files onto the interface again, is there anything more I could try other than performing a full factory reset?

Your alpha channel access expired, which was probably causing issues. I've added your interface back to the alpha channel for another month. Please try again with VCIConfig.

Finally, I am back in business (actually, pastime, considering the hours I already spent on it) but it was not exactly straightforward.

I didn't know how the various release channels work so I previously didn't see them as a possible problem or try and change them.

Nevertheless, just trying to update again with VCIConfig before and after an VCDS Mobile AutoScan did not resolve the issues. The behavior was almost exactly the same. Only VCDS Self Update report once "You are up to date.". Later, it was back to "Internal Server Error".

There was also no update from VCIConfig after I explicitly switched to the Beta channel. After another VCDS Mobile AutoScan, VCIConfig downloaded 474k of RODs and extracted them, but, again, ASAM data was not available using VCDS Mobile.

I then switched to the "Release" channel, which caused the DS to be updated (down-dated?) with an apparently small download. Nevertheless, VCDS "Test" still reported the "interface busy talking to VCDS Cloud" thing.

I switched back to "Beta" channel, afterwards a whole lot of DS updates was downloaded again and extracted, painfully slow this time.
But I was rewarded with a perfect VCDS Mobile AutoScan and correct reading of all the MVB I am interested in. HUDs had to be recreated, but I've become quite quick at that.

It would be good to know what I have to do once the Alpha access expires. The whole update thing is really time consuming and I would like to plan ahead for that.

I have to say, the big HV-battery in the 8VA e-tron (and being able to easily connect a 3.5 kW charger) is quite a plus for not having to worry about the 12 V system going South and not blowing a gallon of gas or two into the blue sky while running all the autoscans and updates.

Well, you're on the beta channel now, and the beta channel never expires, so there is nothing that you NEED to do. You can stay on the beta channel and receive beta testing updates whenever they are available.

Greetings all, I am having a similar issue, Test/USB, "Hex-Net interface is busy talking to VCDS-cloud...". Just updated to 18.9.0 and firmware "you are up to date". Hex-net via USB (both ports and rebooted) green/orange/flashing green LED. On both '08 R32 and '18 A5.

Then OK:
Port status OK
Interface: Not found!
OK to open firmware
Then it says firmware is latest
Shower-rinse-repeat, over and over.

Please advise. Damn near in limp mode, gotta get cracking on this. Many thanks.

Have you re-booted it after update?

If that doesn't fix it, please go to the Advanced tab, switch it to Beta channel and update again.
