I'm looking for assurance on my suspicion from here :)

I have retrofitted a 5QA 919 298C park assist module and the extra 4 side sensors. Everything was working fine until yesterday evening all of a sudden the park assist was disabled and an error was raised about faulty left side park assist sensor.
I've tried swapping the sensor with normal rear pdc sensor, no change. I've also measured the wiring, no problems there either.

I'm suspecting that the module has gone faulty, that is basically the only option coming to my mind :) I have extra PLA2.0 module available but I don't want to swap that in yet as I need to recode some modules for that to work.

Here's the most recent full autoscan. Sorry that does not have the error visible but it shows all the relevant information. After that I've pasted the error I have on the park steer assist module.

I would first try recoding it without a zero WSC.
Then try swapping the left and right sensors around and see if you still have the same fault. Mine is working fine without any issues so far.

What actual error do you get on the mfd?

PL24 didn't help much because that #10 module isn't listed however ETKA shows the rear outer rear quantity of 2 when I search 5QA-919-298-C and choose a random chassis. The 4 inner rear bumper sensors are the same part number.

Random examples:
5Q0-919-275-C Rear outer (2)
5Q0-919-275-B Rear inner (4)

I would swap the outer sensors to see if that moves to the right side before you replace #10.

Edit, I didn't see myounus's post when I replied we have the same idea.

Ok, thanks for the advice. However I already tried that. Like I mentioned in my opening post, I swapped the PLA sensor with regular PDC rear sensor as they are the same, and still the same error for the same spot. So that eliminates the sensor failure in my opinion. Also like mentioned, wiring I've measured and that does not have short to ground on +12v and sensor lines and also ground is having continuity throughout the wiring in all the right places.

I would first try recoding it without a zero WSC.
Then try swapping the left and right sensors around and see if you still have the same fault. Mine is working fine without any issues so far.

What actual error do you get on the mfd?

No error on MFD. When I press PLA button, it gives park assist failure, workshop on mfd. When I press PDC button or the park pilot engages with reverse, it shows exclamation mark on the left side of the car on MIB screen.

And I'll try to recode the module with something else set as WSC etc. than zeroes. The module was brand new when I bought it so it needed parameterization before taking it into use. I could try and re-parameterize it as well.

Funny thing is that this was working flawlessly for a few weeks until now. I did a re-orientation of the sensor holders on all four corners on saturday as they were incorrectly positioned (the sensor faces were pointing down more than straight). Only sensor I disconnected was the front left one as that holder position needed some more work. Others I did not.

I'm still pretty sure that the issue is with the PLA module. This might be a software glitch of course so could be that no actual hw fault.

Glad to hear you already confirmed sensor compatibility. My only other suggestion would be to check Adv Measuring Value [*IDE01166*] Supply voltage for park assist sensor with various rear sensors unplugged. If the voltage would change significantly when plugging in any rear sensor that may indicate a sensor, perhaps an entirely different one, dropping the voltage to all rear sensors resulting in that fault code. If the entire rear harness can be easily disconnected via a large connector in the back I would start by doing that first.

If all of that checks out I agree. That makes it look like the module. I searched TSBs and TPIs for that DTC and didn't locate anything. I didn't locate any flash updates either and just checked this site today to make sure:

https://vag-flashinfo.de/index.php?partno=5QA+919+298+C&as=

SWL 0045 appears to be up to date.

Do let us know how this works out.

Thanks Dana for the suggestions. That's exactly what I'm going to try out tomorrow.

Today i measured the sensor line up to PLA module and that is fine. Also swapped out to PLA2 module to rule out module failure. That checked out as well, same problem so module has not failed.
PLA2 module does not seem to be that sensitive as it shows the graphics correctly from all the sensors for a short while until it beeps and the exclamation mark shows up.

So my only investigation line now is rear sensors. You are probably right that it is not the side rear left PLA sensor that is causing this failure, most likely it is another sensor but the PLA just reports the problem like this.
Luckily I have some cheap Chinese sensors as spare :) Those are confirmed working as normal PDC sensors (but not as PLA, they are just crap) so I can do some swapping and try out various configurations.

So I'll report back when I've done the swapping exercise. Swap in, swap out, Karate Kid style :D

Little update.

Today I finally had some "quality" time with the car. I looked at measurement values for the individual park assist sensors. None of the rears show a distance. All of them display ERROR in the value field which I find a little odd. Front's show variable distances for all the sensors having something in front of them and if no object visible then reads infinite.

However, MIB display works fine and logically. I went and blocked each sensor one by one and no problems in the display.

Then I went and checked ALL the wires from the park assist module connector and no problems there either. I also swapped all the rear sensors between each other and the problem still stays at the rear left side park assist sensor.

Next step I'm going to do is to strip the wire for that individual sensor giving the error up to the connection point and see if there's a break or a short somewhere. There has to be, it's the only logical reason for the fault.

Investigation continues.

At first, when retrofitting PLA, did you retrofit whole new or used wiring harnesses for the front and rear bumpers? If the rear ones are used or self-made then perhaps there's a continuity issue somewhere in the harness?

Self made wiring to front and to back. I tried to use as few connection points as possible.

There are only 2 connection points in the rear wiring so those are easy to check. I checked yesterday the other one that is on the module side and that was fine. Today I’ll check the one close to the problematic sensor.
Although multimeter did not show any incorrect continuity in any of the wires it still could be that there is a bad connection.

Well I checked through the complete rear wiring. There are no issues there. Everything is as it should be.

Now this is getting really interesting. I’m starting to suspect that the problem is not with the rear sensor but the front one. I had front left PLA sensor disconnected for a while due to re attachment of the sensor holder. Problems started immediately when I reconnected the sensor.

I’m wondering why is the car saying it’s rear left?

Anyway, I’ll swap the front sensors and see if the error moves to the other side.

Sounds like your module is 'stuck' on an error messsge. Maybe reflashing will help??

Solved!

myounus, you're closer than you think :)

I swapped the front park assist sensors and no change. So I took one more closer look at the left side rear sensor. I put measuring value blocks visible for Oscillating time for left rear park assist sensor and same for right one. Right one showed correctly ms value, left one showed ERROR. I kept ignition on and started measuring the voltages between +12v and gnd, and +12 and sensor line. And BAM! all of a sudden the left sensor started showing ms values in the measurement field.

Put everything back together and voila, all works again.

My conclusion was as well after all this that the module was somehow stuck on error and shorting the supply and gnd and sensor line with multimeter woke it up.
