Audi A8 4E - Wiper distance to A-pillar

Over the weekend I replaced the wiper mechanism as it had seized and couldn't move the wipers any more. The motor / ECU (J400) was fine so no fault codes were logged when it couldn't move. Replacement mechanism installed and aligned as per Elsa and wipers move once again. I was reading there's a procedure to set the distance to the A-pillar when using VAS. I had an attempt using VCDS but couldn't do it. The wiper motor ECU (J400) is a slave off 0x09 Central Electric I (J519) in the A8 4E. The coding of J400 is 00000030 and I didn't know if this was the measurement. It refused any coding changes.

Is it possible to use VCDS for this procedure? The wiper alignment is good and I'm more curious than anything. Thanks.

Here is the VAS procedure:

Setting distance to A-pillar

Notes:

The distance to the A-pillar can only be successfully set if:

the wiper motor has been brought to a reference position after fitting by pressing the windscreen wiper switch -E22 (e.g. single wipe) and the wiper arms are fitted correctly as per the Workshop Manual A Workshop Manual, Audi A8 2003> Electrical System; Rep.Gr. 92 if the windscreen wiper switch is in its basic setting (-0-).

Procedure for coding distance to A-pillar:

1. If no test program was entered in the test plan, on the VAS 5051 select the following path:

Go to/Function and component selection/Body (Rep.Gr. 01; 27; 50 - 97)/Electrical system (Rep.Gr. 01; 27; 90 - 97)/01 - Self-diagnosis compatible systems/09 - Electronic central electrics (Rep.Gr. 97)/J400 - Wiper motor control unit, Functions/J400 - Replacing (Rep.Gr.-92)

2. In the test program the control unit version and the coding of the wiper motor control unit -J400 are first displayed. If the control unit is not coded, the coding value "255" is shown here.

3. Next choose the selective control element "wiper upper reverse point". Press -Next- to move the wiper to its upper reverse position. Now the distance from the A-pillar to the hinge of the windscreen wiper on the driver side must be measured.

Be sure to fit the wiper as per the Workshop Manual, so as to avoid faults arising from incorrect fitting.

After about 15 seconds the wiper moves back to the lower reverse position. Only when the windscreen wiper switch -E22 is operated (e.g. single wipe) does the wiper return to its parked position.

4. In the test program the wiper motor control unit -J400 is then recoded. For this, the measured value between the A-pillar and the hinge of the windscreen wiper must be transmitted to the control unit. When the coding is read out again, the new value is displayed and the previous one in brackets after it.

(The coding of the distance is only accepted if a - Move to upper reverse position - control element test has been performed beforehand.)

5. If the displayed coding value does not match the specification of 36 ± 2mm, the value must be re-measured with another control element test and the coding then repeated or corrected as appropriate.

System limitations:

After 5 coding attempts no more coding values are accepted. Coding can only be resumed following a terminal 15 reset (ignition off and back on).

If no control element test was performed (move to upper reverse point) the coding is also not accepted.

Then use Output test as described before Coding test(s).

Specification for 4E2 910 113 is "30 mm", 36 ± 2mm is for 4E2 910 113 B/C

I had a quick look in 4E0-910-279.lbl too - but couldn't find any reference to the wiper. It's great that we have NEtech on board.

Also, the other part of the "Setting Distance" procedure is to enter your measurement and send it to the Control Unit. Normally, the only usual way of inputting values like this is via an adaptation channel. But does the [Subsystem] coding value really represent 30mm in this case?

So when I worked with the semi-smart wiper systems, before I tried to put the arms on, I'd cycle the ignition on then off, then bump down on the wiper stalk. This tells the wiper motor to go into a service mode where normally the wipers are raised to end of travel then stop.

Now with the wiper motor stopped in a known position, I would just refit the wiper arms, lining up the blades with the etched dirt pattern on the windshield. Torque the nuts down to secure the arms onto the wiper unit. Turn the ignition back on and bump the wiper stalk to return the wipers down to the normal park position.

Good news, it works as described by NEtech, many thanks! I added the line to the labelfile, performed selective output test then afterwards J400 would accept a coding change that does represent the measured distance.

I also found 15 output test numbers while interrogating the module before I had to stop as the A8 threw an energy management warning... I was testing for about an hour and got to about test 3200, so I really do need a battery charger connected before doing any more. Sure is a power hungry car!

My focus is now on the Central Electric J519 module in general and expanding the documentation. Here are the test numbers so far. I just need to double check they follow in order the test descriptions as in my earlier post then I'll update the labelfile with these and with measuring blocks.

Thanks. I subscribed to this thread as a reminder to revisit that label. So, between Niels and I one of us can get those added after they are identified.

Even if you find it difficult to label each one, and decide to abort on the project, please bump this back up so I get an email. Likewise, if I locate something to make labeling and testing easier I'll report back.

@mattylondon, you are documenting a "security access" code in your label - per my resources that control module simply doesn't support adaptation. Having looked at my archives, we are missing control module maps from that specific BCM. May I ask you to create maps (if truly applicable, make sure to use the security access code there as well) and send them to us?

I was updating my 4E label using the 4F/4L and adjusting as I go. I left the SA code until I try the labelfile, which I havn't had time yet. Hence it's only partly complete. I'm sure the documentation you have is correct as the Ad map is empty. So the final labelfile only needs measuring blocks, basic setting for steering column, coding and selective output tests.
