2010 VW CC Won't Start

Hi all,

I've hit a wall and I need help. I'm hoping someone can provide me some clues on what to do next.

The PO had had the coils changed out shortly before I got the car, so I didn't want to start there. Looking through this and other forums, it seemed like the J37 cam adjustment valve was a decent place to start. I swapped that out and, in addition, checked all of the fuses and checked all of the ground wires.

Now the car won't start.
It turns over, seems to be getting fuel (smell, pump is working, didn't do pressure), won't catch.
The battery was 5 years old and had low voltage, so I got a new one. I tried starting some more, no dice. The battery did, however drain down significantly, although I don't know if just from starting or from some other drain while sitting for a few days.
The starter runs even when the key fob is not depressed, so I'm wondering if the ignition switch is an issue. I cannot find anywhere if it is normal for the starter to continue to operate if the engine has not started even with the fob not depressed.

I should note that the battery is at 13.7V+ with a voltmeter, even with the readings above. I don't know what to try next. The ECU control module fuse is ok, as are all the other fuses. I hate electrical gremlins, don't know what else to do.

Have you removed the ECU supply relay and starter relay for direct testing to see if a trigger pulse is coming or if stuck?

OP: FYI.... I am an asshole, but I wouldn't leave you to die in no ditch either, so get back to the collective & so we can solve this mystery, because information is still missing!

Do you see RPM signals for G28 and G40 in VCDS blocks and what procedure did you follow to install the adjuster + are you sure the timing is set correctly?

When you say Voltage that's great, but do you have ( Force/Amperage/Current ) or "FAC" ?

One strand of copper will get you Voltage with no "FAC" , did you know that?

thanks for responding. No worries on damaging my fragile ego or anything.

I realize now that I skipped ahead in the story to start, so I apologize for that.

I replaced the N205 valve (not J37, don't know where I came up with that...) because I had a P0011 and P052A fault code when I did a scan when I did an oil change on the car a couple of months ago. Bad on me that I let this go for so long after reading the codes. The car was still running fine at that point, and I had competing priorities so... Not a great excuse or even an excuse, but that's how it happened. Replacement of the N205 valve is a basic 'take it out, put the new one in' operation per the service manual (4-Cylinder Fuel Injection Engine (1.8L and 2.0L Engine, Chain Drive)), and I didn't find anything about having to reset timing along with this, so hopefully I didn't make a $$$$ mistake there. The first scan in the original post is where everything was at a couple of months later, when the car was taking a long time to start and not running so good anymore. Here's that scan from the oil change:

I had hoped that the new troubles might be fixed by correcting the error from the oil change scan above (replacing the N205), but I think I can safely say we're well past that now. This was decidedly more in the hope than the logic camp. Because of all the new codes, I went through and pulled all the fuses to check, and all are good. I have also checked the J271 relay, and it is operating correctly. I checked the J906 starter relay today, and that is good as well. I took out all of the grounds I could find (block to frame, battery to frame, ??? to frame (under airbox)), cleaned everything up (it all looked clean, but I still wire brushed everything off), and put everything back together.

I had not seen the FAC testing before, so that is a huge help! I'll have to get some stuff to get that going.

I'll have to look up testing the ignition switch. Haven't figured that out so far. I should add that, after trying to start the car and taking the key fob out, the throttle body will cycle and the CD player will also actuate with the radio off. I'm guessing this from the noises from the radio, at least. Many gremlins seem to be at work. Or, it's all normal stuff that I just never noticed before. Not sure which.

I'll keep everyone posted on progress. If nothing else, maybe my mishaps/mistakes can save someone else.
