Hi, I have this early 05 Passat being driven by my 81 year old friend.
It wont pass inspection because the anti-lock lights are on.
I have used Vag con in the past to remedy auto trans issues. Upgraded recently to clear codes on Daughter in laws car.
I am half way versed in automotive mechanics.
All sensors seem to be good because they register same speeds on Vagcom while driving.
Have not ohm tested them
It used to state that the front right sensor was the problem but since I adjusted the air gap and hardwired a connection that was doubtful, it only reads pump problem now.
I found the forth fuse from bottom missing. (had read where failed ABS could make throttle not respond, so ppl remove fuse.) Installed 15amp fuse, started car-the abs lights came on then went off, back on, back off, all the time heard clicks from under hood coinciding with lights going on and off. It stopped with no lights on, so I test drove- lights came back on.
REVISION Found pic of another fuse box-no fuse there. Even tho there is power at both sides, I believe none should be there.
I had previously found good power at the two big leads to the controller. Have not done load test
Controller was rebuilt 9 months ago. Car sat since.
Cleared codes numerous times to have them come back on as soon as I start driving.

I am trying to post the log and pics of the fuse box and the vin, but cant find anything other than a place to paste a URL! Can someone help me with any of these issues?
Thanks,
Gary
Does anyone know what the electrical connection to the aluminium with the all the fluid piping and what could be a pump motor block does. Looks like it has two leads.

Hello,

We have a Ross-Tech wiki page for this fault code, click on this to go to the fault code page ---> 00301 - ABS Return Flow Pump (V39)

I would suggest posting an Auto-Scan, that way we can see all the details.

You can post pictures that are hosted in other places. Do an internet search for 'free image hosting site'.

Next time I have time, I will get the cover off the computer box and check those fuses.
Thanks to Jeff for telling me about the secret screw access hole.
If only I understood what the other 2 lead electrical connection to the aluminum block was?
Does anyone know?

So the Electric connection to the aluminum ABS block has 3 leads, but too hard to test for power at this time.
Wiggled the connection and retried. Am getting a good clicking sequence coinciding with the ABS lights going on and off. Red brake light flashing and on too.
Battery seemed to go dead while doing these tests. I wouldn't be surprised if alternator was going bad. Its a new battery.
The Brake booster throws a code too. Could this be causing my problems?
Anyone have any thoughts?

There's been a lot of screwing around with the ABS controller in this car. I think you may have wrong or bad parts somewhere.

It used to state that the front right sensor was the problem
Ah, our old friend 00285 that likes to show up when the wrong ABS controller is installed. Check out the Special Note in that Wiki article.

Interesting that you got it to go away:

but since I adjusted the air gap and hardwired a connection that was doubtful, it only reads pump problem now.

And according to your Auto-Scan, you have controller 4B0 614 517 G installed, which looks to be valid for your VIN according to PartsLink24.

Controller was rebuilt 9 months ago. Car sat since.

But since the ABS assembly has clearly been touched, and come back from a "rebuilder", and you've historically seen codes that imply mismatched ABS hardware, and you're currently showing one that might mean mismatched hydraulics... let's get some Mark I Eyeball on the problem.

Here's a picture from my dearly departed 2004 Passat GLX. It's going to have a different part number from yours, but this should illustrate what we need you to look for. Can you check and report back exactly what part numbers you see on both sides?

Never sent pic before so this is a test
Thanks for your help!
This shows the numbers and the dash lights. The red BRAKE is flashing.
Like I said, I hear something going on like a clicking and i feel it in one of the pipes going to master C.
Thanks,
Gary

I am the one who took the wrapping off the wire bundle to the controller. It was nice and untouched neat before I examined it

Yeah looks like you're having trouble. Google Photos doesn't seem to allow direct references to shared photos, only the landing page which doesn't work for this purpose. I dug the links out of your post source and tried IMG linking directly to the photos themselves with no joy, it looks like they're doing some Referrer filtering.

Here's a link with instructions on how to use Imgur instead of Google to share photos here: https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?95-How-To-Post-Pictures

In the meantime, here's some clicky links other members can follow instead for your photos:

https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=S1pZWjV6V0lOSTB2NXFBYnZuRkFQYUJVNExQOHV3

I'll respond to the problem itself in a follow-up post.

Thank you JYOUNG!
From reading other posts, could it be that some recoding needs to be done?
And if so, can the VagCom do it?

If not, I was thinking about going to junk yard and trying to find the complete unit and swapping it out. (I know it is a major job with all the bleeding )
I think someone told me once that if I find the same part?? number, I could?
And if I do all that, will some recoding be necessary?
Thanks!

VCDS could change it if needed, but your current coding of 4277 is appropriate to your car:

Code:
0?xxx: Chassis
4 = Audi A4 (8D) / VW Passat (3B)
6 = Audi A6 (4B)
8 = Audi A8 (4D)
0x?xx: Brakes
1 = C54 (Lucas) [PR-1LZ]
2 = FN3 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LB/1LE/1LF/1LT/1ZC] (verified you have PR-1LE using PartsLink24 lookup of your VIN)
3 = FN2/HP2 (Dual-Piston) [PR-1LX] & Brembo [PR-1ZL]
4 = FNRG-60 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LA/1LG]
0xx?x: Engine
5 = 4/6/8 Cyl. Diesel
7 = 4/5 Cyl. Gasoline
9 = 6/8/12 Cyl. Gasoline
0xxx?: Transmission
3 = Manual with Low Range (only Audi A6 Allroad)
5 = Manual
7 = Automatic (01L/01N/01V)
9 = Multitronic (01J)

If not, I was thinking about going to junk yard and trying to find the complete unit and swapping it out. (I know it is a major job with all the bleeding )

Sure. And I think that would be my next step, if this were my car. Some repair info sources for other VW/Audi makes indicates there's some electrical troubleshooting that you would want to do, and I had wondered about that 3-pin connector you mentioned. However, the Bentley repair manual specific to this model-year-range Passat says you skip straight to condemning the hydraulic assembly. Mmmkay!

Printed output from Scan Tool VAG1551 (ST) Possible cause Corrective action
00301 - ABS return flow pump V39
Malfunction in hydraulic control module
Erase DTC Memory 05 Erase DTC Memory (function 05), End Output (Function 06).
Switch off ignition.
Switch on ignition
If malfunction occurs again, replace hydraulic control unit.

There are some reasonably priced units on eBay if you are okay with used. I would get the entire assembly, not just the electronics, because the pump in question is part of the hydraulic side. PL24 indicates you may use 4B0 614 517 G (your original), 4B0 614 517 P, or 4B0 614 517 J. Avoid all other variants, they're for different powertrain configurations.

And if I do all that, will some recoding be necessary?
Potentially. When you install the new module, scan the car and see if it's already coded to 4277. If so, you're good. If not, there's some instructions you need to follow, it takes a little more than "just" setting the coding to 4277.

Thank you very much for your help!
I will take your numbers and look on Ebay and at my local junk yard.
Awfully nice of you to help me!

I hope these pictures show.
So, I looked on Ebay to find ambiguous listings or very expensive 1000.00 units. Became confused and discouraged. Will continue to at least understand what may or may not work from ebay and online.
Went to my local junk yard. They had 3 passats but none of them had the config with the 3pin connector to it. See pic of mine and junk yards.
I tested the 3 pin connector and think (quite sure!) I found the red to be the ground and the other two to have 4.5 volts.
I found this posting on another site and found it very interesting. https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4733455-00301-ABS-Return-Flow-Pump-(V39) by Reiddy
From this idea, I loosened the housing< like it said, and it did feel stuck. Put it all back together, cleared codes and road tested-no joy.
Even tried removing fuse from computer and tried to activate the pump but could not, and could not understand how Reiddy was telling me to.
I wonder if there is a wiring schematic showing the wiring going into the ABS Module, so I could test just the motor?

Thanks for any help.

Looks like they did not show.
The instructions says to paste the url between tags, but when I click on "Post image" I get a bar telling me to paste into!

Hi,
The link to Wiki refers to a Bosch 5.3 whereas my unit is a Bosch 5.7.
I have worked with the Wiki for 05 Passat with no luck yet. The code showed a letter then several spaces then 4 odd numbers. Not the code! Couldn't make the steering procedure work as the video shows.
I think I tried the 4277 for the code but am still unsure about the log in. The Wiki asks about a Passat W8. Not sure? Also- the engine- not sure? Probably 7??
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Passat_(3B)_Brake_Electronics_(Bosch_5.7)
So these are the things I am researching now.
Any help would be appreciated!

My brake code is ILE, so would it be 5, (the only line with ILE in it.
I did find that mine is a 4 cylinder so not the W8

I do now see on my scan that the code should be the 04277. But what would the login be? I wonder if I should try the redirect of the 5.3?
Am a little concerned about an error message I saw once "Incorrect coding could render unit inopperable" ?

If you know the coding, you can work backwards to derive the login.
CodingMeaningLogin
4Passat (not W8)9
2PR-1LB/1LE/1ZC Brakes5
7PR-T0B/T10/T6V/T0D/T0F Engine7

Thank you for your responce!
I have tried that set and just tried that set again. I got them off the Audi, redirect Bosch 5.3 Wiki page. I always get "t 3428", which I suspect is the original code to the item/unit/component.
When I try VW 3B Passat Wiki, using 9-reg passat, 5-ILE brakes (as I have), 5-engine-only one that has ILE in it, and 7- for auto trans. for log in
4257 for code......still get t 3428 in the pane.
