I am fighting an issue with a 2005 Passat with a 5hp19 transmission. Flex pipe had broken and was being driven for about 2 weeks like that. (16 year old's car solution was to turn up the radio) When check engine light came on, pretty sure transmission also went into limp mode. I took it to the only "real" VW shop and they said the check engine light was a bad catalytic converter. Recommended fix was almost $2000. I said just fix the flex pipe and see what happens. Flex pipe was fixed, but still have CEL. Brought car home and used a ODB2 reader and only found solenoid errors. I replaced the bad front motor mount and did a transmission filter/fluid change. Old transmission fluid was dirty, but didn't fixed the errors. Got a VCDS cable and am getting the following code after clearing code and just starting the car.
18238 - Pressure Control Valve 4 (N218): Short to Plus
P1830 - 003 - Mechanical Failure
If I run the transmission through the gears, the following codes come up.
18238 - Pressure Control Valve 4 (N218): Short to Plus
P1830 - 003 - Mechanical Failure
18227 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P1819 - 003 - Please Register/Activate

I have tested the solenoids by checking resistance and they seem okay. I visually checked the TCM and didn't see any obvious water damage and checked the harness from the transmission to the TCM for continuity. I am trying to figure out my next step: find a used transmission and change it, replace solenoids, or try a different TCM.
Looking for anyone who might have some experience before I just start throwing parts at this.
Thank you.
