Golf 7 BCM and GATEWAY upgrade tips and tricks

I need to upgrade BCM from MID to HIGH to retrofit heated seats and I need to upgrade Gateway from MID to HIGH to have the extended CAN bus for direct TPMS.

I already have the modules and I know that I need the dealer to remove component protection once I swap them.

I know that coding/adaptations need to be "copied" from old modules to new ones.

I was wondering if the dealer would be able, once component protection is gone, to program the modules with all the parameters that my car had from the factory. Please note the HIGH modules are not new, they come from wrecked cars.

The dealer I go to is a very small shop, there is one person only working on ODIS, who is completely unaware of retrofits, and sometimes gives me the idea he also has a limited knowledge of ODIS as well.

I also remember, reading around, that the new Gateway could possibly need to be resent all the parameters and, again, it would be better if I could give as much insight as possible to the dealer.

They are willing to help, just unaware of any out-of-the-ordinary procedure.

Last thing, does anybody know if the parking aid module goes into component protection as well? I will swap that to upgrade from park pilot to park assist, I might as well carry it with the other two if needed.

I am essentially in the same boat, I am going to swap out a new CECM for my MK7 GSW and would also like to know if I need to take the vehicle in to the dealer for this or if I can do everything at home with my HEX+CAN and VCDS.

I am going from 5Q0-937-087-Q to 5Q0-937-087-R --a used part of course!

Any insight to this would be appreciated!

In retrofits the dealer cannot do anything for you except remove component protection. You would need to manually update all of the adaptations and coding yourself manually as these modules are not for your car.
The module for parking (10) does not have component protection and you can easily swap that.

I have done all of the retrofits you mention and would strongly advise you NOT to ask the dealer to try and code re-provision the modules for your car. They are not designed for your specific module so would fail in paramterisation.

This is exactly what I needed to know.

I am just afraid of missing something, the admap for the BCM is over two thousand entries and some of them only exist in the original one, while some others only exist in the new one.

I guess it will be lots of trial and error.

You can.
The only effect component protection has is restricted functionality so it may appear that some functions are not working, hence it is better to have component protection removed first!

Take comments with a grain of salt.

First of all the gateway IS the proper one for your car. It actually states under AM that it's also used for 5Q0 907 530 AL.
The BCM is a very old version and is not for your car. The proper replacement for your car would have been CJ. Doesn't mean the BCM isn't going to work fine though.

Keep in mind that your current modules are not available from VW. They normally only keep HIGH versions of modules with some exceptions. If they kept all the low and MID versions in stock their warehouse would be insane.
So generally when you go to replace modules like gateways BCM's and even mounting brackets you get high versions most of the time.

That being said an authorized shop CAN reload your parameters and options if you have any installed such as Mode select, cruise and weariness recognition on the gateway you have. They can also check the gateway to see whats already active before loading if they know how.
Parameters can't be loaded on to the BCM as it's the wrong version for your car.

You may not need any of this done as long as the car the modules came from have your basic option set. This was a real issue in the past on PQ35 where a car has keyless entry and the replacement didn't. I could change the eeprom directly on those to enable it though.

You just need to be careful when you replace a module like a gateway or BCM. The gateway is more critical. If you wanted to buy a SWaP code later to activate a feature it wont work if the equipment in the car isn't correct. During the programming of the SWaP code the online server programs the modules required for the feature. If the modules are not correct it will error out saying it can't create a paramerterization for the vehicle.

All in all though you should be good for what your doing. You can of course do all your coding and adaptations ahead of time.

the Gateway I bought comes from an Audi A3 so I bet my ass it won't be plug and play.

I have Drive Mode Select, Cruise Control (regular) and not sure what other features are considered SWAP.

if you could offer any more insight that I can report to the dealer on how to proceed with ODIS, I would be grateful. I feel like their only knowledge is resetting SRI, they never did any retrofit.

I wouldn't want to end up like other two guys who needed to reach out to some Polish guy who remotely parameterized the Gateway. I don't even have a 5054A interface.

if it makes any difference, I am not planning on adding more SWAP things later on, the only thing that comes to mind as available is vocal commands for the radio, which I couldn't care less.

ah, I also have App Connect, which I don't use/care, and actually just does not connect to my phone, for whatever reason. should I lose it, so be it.

for the BCM, CJ is what I already have as stock, it's missing the heated seats pins.
all the pics of CJs available for buying online show those pins as missing too.

the AJ I bought comes from an Audi A3 as well, lots of adaptations need to change but it should be good. when I got it months ago I was not aware I should have paid attention to HW and SW versions.

if I had to get another now, based on all the autoscans I read, I would get a CG or a CP, with the CP as 2nd choice because it's not HIGH but MID+

btw, my parents have Skoda Octavia with a CP as stock and it came with heated seats as stock.

I am honestly confused between all versions, why the hell are they so many?

I had been told VCDS would not be able to recode/adapt when Component Protection engages.

since this is apparently false, I will put in the AJ tomorrow and with patience change all adaptations. then I will drive to dealer to have CP removed and to learn the keyfobs.

before swapping the Gateway I need more insight. I need to know if I should buy a 5054A "just in case". I need the High Gateway just for active TPMS, which can wait.

Sorry the proper BCM is CL, was hard flipping back and forth to the messages and I just typed the wrong one.
The gateway may work as is, some modules are very picky about parameters and working in the proper car. Just not sure if the gateway is one of them. A camera from a VW into an Audi will not show the proper lines or give the proper camera options, a PLA module from a VW wont show the PLA screen on an A3......

I don't have screen shots or recall exactly off hand the screens for doing SWaP reloading. I spend most of my life on Audi's and every few months a VW. There is a function in the tests though to read and load activation's. If I'm in there again soon I will try and make note. I have a car rescheduling every week that I need to use those functions on but I can't guarantee next week will be his week.

The TPMS is cool. I did a 9.2" MIB with VC, ACC and TPMS on a 2013 Golf. Love the TPMS in VC.

Don't worry so much about the gateway, it's the proper part for your car. They can load the coding and parameters using online. They can try and use the replace module function which I think will load everything in for them. Not sure if it will do SWaP automatically though.

Unfortunately this is what I do for a living so I can only point you down the path. I can't walk it with you. My employer would be non to happy if I was giving away all the trade secrets online

today I replaced BCM and Gateway.

after going to dealer I still have errors I cannot clear.
Cruise Control does not work anymore.
Drive Mode Select does not work anymore.
I have EPC warning on in instruments panel.
I have a new "Personalisation" menu in the infotainment with a driver's name, the menu was not there before.
