ACC radar adjustment on 2017 A3

Anyone know the meaning of these 5 measured values in attached pic? For example, does "misalignment angle" mean the angle the ECU has measured as an offset error? The 3rd line states "performed adjustment...". Does that mean that was the adjustment made at the factory that the ECU recorded?

I ask because my ACC stopped working. I get the yellow triangle warning symbol in the dash and I get the below error code C110300. I did a rough alignment check of the radar alignment mirror that's bonded to the radar surface (square block unit in center, front, lower grill) and I calculate the mirror to be near perfect normal to the geometric vertical plane of the car and pointing .33 degrees too high to the earth level horizontal plane. I measured the mirror to be near perfect normal to the vertical car plane. I'll post the procedure separately if it makes sense to do so - if my measured offset of .33 deg is correctable and ACC starts back up.

If the ACC has lost its alignment and needs recalibration then the dealers or a specialist ADAS garage with the kit would need to do it.

Uh, I was not subscribed to this thread so I never go notified. Anyway, I'll post a scan tomorrow. It appears there is no calibration possible in VCDS. It provides measured values only. Is that correct? I understand that the VAS6430 aligns itself to the driving axis of the car so that the radar puck can be then aligned to the tool. This person did this... http://www.audi4ever.com/v2/blog/de...ruise-Control--A4-A5-Q5--Distronic/index.html and I've been able to a similar alignment but with a cross-hair laser. I can post that procedure but even I adjust the radar unit perfectly to spec how do I tell the car it's aligned? And what is the spec? Normal to driving axis? I imagine horizontally it should be but vertically it might be off normal per design. There's a lot of data but no spec for it it seems.

What has happened for the radar to lose it's adjustment? Have you done something with the bumper? Lowered the car etc.? It does not lose that without being physically moved.
There was another similar issue on different thread and there the reason was that the radar unit was knocked out from one of the fixings. OP from that thread just clicked the fixings in place and voila, misadjustment issue gone. So check those first before doing any adjustments.

I removed the bumper and removed the radar unit from it's attachment to the bumper. The same bumper was put back on. Radar unit mounts to a pin-slot repeatable arrangement on the bumper. The bumper was installed at the same elevation (markings where bolts attach were used to verify).

Also, I do not see anything in basic settings except checking the heating function.

That's how Audi provides a low risk and robust procedure to get repeatable calibration results from users who purchase and are trained on that system. It is not the only way to do it "properly". ....IMO. At the risk of making an inaccurate assumption the radar mirror can be aligned orthogonaly to the geometric center of the car. If you assume the center of the mirror, the center of the front facing camera, and a 3rd point that is plumb to earth define the vertical plane of the car the mirror can be aligned to that to establish its horizontal spec. Level earth can be used to align vertically. Using a cross-hair laser I found the horizontal alignment near perfect and the vertical alignment pointing down a few tenths of a degree.

What is the software tree required for that alignment system in the video? It's not ODIS, or is it?

Provided you have adjustment screws on the radar base to physically change its alignment. I just swapped the front bumper on my tiguan (which involved removing the radar unit behind the VW emblem) and it clicks into the grille without any alignment screws present (the seat of the radar is part of the grille). Aligning is done with the same setup as in the video, but purely involves changing parameters of the radar. No static alignment possible. And if I remember correctly, a radar unit that does have alignment screws to change the physical position of the radar also needs to be calibrated afterwards just like the non-adjustable units like in my tiguan. So IMO, you’re still half-assing it by only doing a static adjustment.

I would consider "low-risk, robust, and repeatable" to be essential when it comes to a system that can fully control the car's throttle and brakes.

I've driven thousands of miles with ACC engaged in two different cars and have always been amazed at the system's ability to differentiate between vehicles that are in my lane vs. vehicles that are not in my lane, even on very curvy stretches of highway. This has also made me aware of the potential consequences if the system did not do that correctly. Personally, I would be very reluctant to use ACC on a car that had been calibrated willy-nilly, i.e. without following the correct procedures using the correct equipment.

One of the things people seem to miss is that the centerline of the car is not what matters to here, but rather the centerline of the car's thrust angle. This is why a wheel alignment is considered a mandatory part of the procedure. We know the car you're working on has been crashed. Has the wheel alignment even been checked post-repair?

As Uwe has said the system is integrated into the car's throttle and brakes. This is why you won't find 3rd party aftermarket ACC or similar ADAS products and I don't think you ever will.
I don't think any 3rd party company could take the risk of a software error and manslaughter charges. Some things you can't avoid paying through the nose!

Your response is unhelpful. I've never stated I want to change the alignment parameters of the ACC system. I want to align the radar unit to the parameters of the ACC system. That has nothing to do with car throttle or brakes - that is embedded in the system parameters. If it works it works. If the radar is out of alignment it stops working. ...like mine. I want to find what the alignment spec is, what my out-of-alignment is, and then turn the tip/tilt screws on the radar unit to get it working again.

For example, if I can determine which measured value is telling me how far out the horizontal angle is I can easily find how many degrees of screw turn gives so many degrees of angle change. Same with vertical.

My car has tip/tilt adjustment screws on the center radar unit. It is attached to the reinforcement bar, not the grill. If there are only 2 adjustment screws how am I "half-assing" it?

This cannot be correctly/accurately done without the use of specialist equipment. Due to the safety nature of the unit's purpose, i.e. Accelerating and braking when a vehicle is in front of you, the parameters have to be set/aligned by proper equipment.

My car has tip/tilt adjustment screws on the center radar unit. It is attached to the reinforcement bar, not the grill. If there are only 2 adjustment screws how am I "half-assing" it?

I clearly stated that if there are adjustment screws, its still only one step in the 2-part calibration proccess. The second part is what you’re completely ignoring if you only align it using the screws.

Perhaps you are right but that conflicts with what I've read online of other people's similar issue wherein they make an adjustment to the tip/tilt and the system turns back on. Maybe VAG has changed the design for this model year and changed that wherein the system shuts down and losses its alignment completely. If that latter is correct that also conflicts with measured values that show measured angles. I think that if the system can measure itself, output alignment parameters, and turn itself off when it measures something that is out of alignment, then it must know what the alignment needs to be.

What about non OEM targets and racks?

If you wanna play with human lives then get a backstreet job.
As Uwe has said the system is integrated into the car's throttle and brakes. This is why you won't find 3rd party aftermarket ACC or similar ADAS products and I don't think you ever will.
I don't think any 3rd party company could take the risk of a software error and manslaughter charges. Some things you can't avoid paying through the nose!

Is there liability to anyone other than the driver of the car?
Is the driver tasked with paying attention and not relying on the ADAS in the operations manual?
Does that relieve equipment manufacturers and repair facilities from prosecution?

We have been trying to wrap our heads around ADAS for awhile now.
The market interest is keen, yet it seems like most all are rushing down a path that we are not convinced is the best way forward.

People are spending thousands of dollars on systems that we think are highly questionable.
Shops are using systems that are not OEM for these calibrations.
Aftermarket companies are resizing the targets and moving them closer!
They are proposing new locations, putting them on the windshield to align these systems!

We think you are borderline crazy doing this with anything other than OEM systems and targets, legally acquired from Bosch.
I am not a lawyer, but I have heard others question if there is any legal co-operation between USA and China.
The company that I see is selling more of this then anyone is based in Shenzhen, China.
I think the Hella Guttman choice is a better one, at least they are an OEM supplier.

I watched a dealer technician setting the lane assist on a Subaru last month.
The target was located carefully with instructions from the Subaru Select Monitor 4.
The car was in the learning mode. I did not see him put it into learning mode.
It did not acquire the target where it was set.
The tech went to the target and bumped it with his hand!
Now the car was happy.

That left me wondering.

What are you all thinking?

Wow, so much ignorance. I got my ACC working over a year ago, soon after I posted here. The design intent of the system is that the puck up front is aligned to the thrust axis of the vehicle. All anyone has to do is put a 4 foot x 2 foot sheet metal target bonded to a flat particle board panel a few feet in front of the vehicle and geometrically align it to the car. The ekta manual describes set up. Then run Odis to calibrate. Unless your vehicle is grossly out of alignment this is not an issue. The whole $10k alignment rig is ridiculous. Home Depot rig does same thing for $10. Use firewall for datum reference, measure angle car is resting on, etc... your adjusting in tip tilt the target to be normal to the thrust axis of the car.
