I am always in pursuit of learning and constantly look up words to ensure the correct meaning.
For decades an enormous tome sat on my desk - The Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary.
The current edition of 2,264 pages weighs in at almost 4 kilos.

Once in a while I run across some unusual words and thought it would be nice to share them so we can all learn.
Purposely the definitions will not be posted - you have to spend to gain.
Take some time to look them up, and understand the proper usage instead of expecting the internet to do all the work :D

Three I've been saving:

  • rubric
  • circumbilivaginate
  • invigilator

Please post new words you find interesting or under-utilised.

Oh, but seriously, I work in academia. The most over-used word in most accreditation reports is pedagogy, with rubric being a close second.....

Jake: I would seriously question your proclivity for learning new words. This madness might be OK for now, but the practice is bound to become problematic in years to come.

As a man of considerable age, I have to warn you that at some stage, the brain box will become full! Having reached this point some years ago, I can advise that when this happens, the memory process becomes LIFO. That is, to fit-in a new word, you have to lose an old word.

So my plea to you is this - choose which words that want to learn from the Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary very carefully!!

fettle - as in fine fettle, or fettled up

Side note: I'm actually running into these words every day and writing them down!
I guess if I hit a dry spell I can pick something at random from the dictionary...

Schadenfreude.

What Elon Musk probably has just a bit of at the moment. My guess is his net worth just increased by 8 or 9 figures, at least on paper. :D

conflagration

I just watched the press conference on NASA TV. Given that I don't think the rocket went up more than a few hundred meters, I'm thinking that they will find significant damage to the launch pad area when the sun comes up and they can send people out there. The only feedback that NASA could offer is that their remote pressure gauges in the area are all reading normally, and that they have sealed the area until daybreak.....
