    Yes they are. They know that the retrofit scene on VAG cars is BIG. So, why make it easier when you can sell the same part twice or even three times with much bigger premium There are always people who will want to do the retrofit before used parts are available so they need to buy brand new parts. That is money for VAG.

    I'm pretty sure that it ain't a small amount of money that they get from aftersales.

    Then having bought the new part the retrofitter discovers in an increasing number of cases that VAG have made it a swap function, so they can't do the retrofit anyway - without going the firmware hack route.
