Address 01: DTCs cleared

The S4 has a mild stg1 tune (14psi peak) and a catback exhaust. Brakes are stock HP2s. battery connections & fuses are good, as is voltage.

The ABS & ESP lights have been coming on and every time I clear the codes the lights will return after about 10 miles of driving. I spoke to my tuner and he directed me to the ABS control module. I purchased another ABS control module out of another '01 S4 tiptronic (part #s identical, build date about a month prior to the one in my S4) hoping swapping them would solve the problem, but i haven't been able to get that one to work and neither of the modules will take coding or the workshop code.

Here are the coding & wsc from an earlier scan w/the original ABS module:
Code:
Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 8D0-907-389.lbl
   Part No: 8D0 907 389 E
   Component: ABS/ESP allrad D56
   Coding: 04397
   Shop #: WSC 06435

Then about two weeks ago i was driving the home in traffic and the brakes completely locked up. Luckily I was in slow traffic and was able to pull off the road. After having the engine was off for about an hour waiting for a tow, i started it up and the brakes were free again so i drove the mile or so home and parked it in the garage where it's been ever since. I started it up last night in a bid to calibrate the steering angle sensor to see if that would allow me to set the coding/wsc, but the brakes were completely locked up again.

This is a snapshot from group005 with my foot off the brakes
Code:
                Address 03: ABS Brakes (8D0 907 389 E)

21:43:43 Group 005
  -12.5° Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
  0.00°/s Rotation Rate
  51.43 bar Brake Pressure
  -0.19 m/s*2 Transverse Acceleration

When I login & attempt to set the coding/wsc, I will get a message in the coding field reading "ad D56". The D56 part i recognize from the ABS module (also on both ABS module stickers) but I haven't found an explanation yet, made a little harder b/c both "ad" & "D56" are too short a term to be used in the search.
ABS_after_failed_login_1.png

Additionally, I'm wondering if there should be something else in the component field for the ABS module instead of "allrad". Asked my tuner about the issue but he just directed me to the ross-tech coding how-to.

I know that was a lot to read through and if you've stayed with me this far, THANKS! Anyone have any idea where to start on this one?
-Could I have two bad control modules?
-I read another thread for an S8 with an ABS issue and one of the suggestions was to fix the wheel speed sensor first in order to get the coding/wsc to stick, could that work for me as well?
-is there a way to relieve the brake pressure even if I haven't sorted the module? I'd like to at least be able to move the car out of the garage.

Any help is much appreciated,
Imran

Excellent first post, just about all the info we need and CODE tagged. Welcome!

The "ad D56" is just spillover from what's displayed in the Component field in your screenshot. Part number "8D0 907 389 E" and Component field "ABS/ESP allrad D56" from your Auto-Scan got split into "ABS/ESP allr" followed by "ad D56". Allrad is short for AWD in German.

As for why it's displayed like that, that's an excellent question. I don't think the part number should be repeated in the Component field, and you should see your coding in the Soft Coding field instead of overflow. You're also not showing the workshop code. I wonder if that's a VCDS issue. My Phaeton with Bosch 5.7 doesn't show up like that, similar interface and VCDS release:

No fault code found.

I don't have immediate access to a Bosch 5.3 vehicle right now to check if it behaves the same way. Yours is Bosch 5.3 and uses KW1281 instead of KW2000 so it's definitely possible for it to show different behavior than mine above. I'm not sure if this is a cosmetic-only problem, or if it could affect your ability to use VCDS to code the module. That would be a question for Ross-Tech. They might need some debug info.

Whenever odd problems with ABS/ESP crop up, we like to make sure you've got the right unit installed in your car, validated by VIN/PR-code lookup in the genuine VW spare parts database. You'd be astonished how many people get the wrong secondhand controllers installed and end up with inexplicable problems. You took the VIN out of your Auto-Scan above, so I can't check that for you. Would you be willing to provide the VIN in this thread? Or, if you can't do that, you PM it to me.

Additional followup:

-Could I have two bad control modules?
Improbable, but possible.

-I read another thread for an S8 with an ABS issue and one of the suggestions was to fix the wheel speed sensor first in order to get the coding/wsc to stick, could that work for me as well?
Not seeing evidence of a wheel speed sensor in your scans or listed concerns. What brings a wheel speed sensor to mind for you?

-is there a way to relieve the brake pressure even if I haven't sorted the module? I'd like to at least be able to move the car out of the garage.
That might be a thing. Some ABS/ESP units have a Basic Settings feature to run the ABS/ESP pump in Basic Settings to bleed it of air, but it's unclear if you have that feature available, or if that feature would actually release the existing line pressure you seem to have. Pop open Basic Settings and see what you see. Ultimately, you might have to (carefully! with hand and eye protection!) crack open the bleeder screw in each caliper. You observed 51 bar (740 PSI) of remaining pressure, that's to be respected.

Thanks! glad to be here and definitely appreciative for the responses and help

Thank you! I was worried that the tune i'm using had a field incorrectly coded for an Allroad vs the S4 and that might cause a mismatch.

As for why it's displayed like that, that's an excellent question. I don't think the part number should be repeated in the Component field, and you should see your coding in the Soft Coding field instead of overflow. You're also not showing the workshop code. I wonder if that's a VCDS issue.
I luckily had the earlier scan that showed what the coding was before it became all zeros as it is now.
Code:
Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 8D0-907-389.lbl
   Part No: 8D0 907 389 E
   Component: ABS/ESP allrad D56
   Coding: 04397
   Shop #: WSC 06435
there are only the 5 digits available to enter in the WSC field (i believe, not the 13 digits as in your Phaeton/Bosch 5.7), and whenever I attempt to set the coding/WSC as above after logging in, i'll get either all zeros still or the aforementioned repeated part numbers.

Is there something I can do to facilitate that answer? Like figure out how to prepare the debug info and send an email to support@ross-tech? I can dig into this after work.

No problem, my VIN: WAURD68D01A125434

I have no doubt that part mismatches happen all the time. I found a local guy that was parting another 2001.5 (post "facelift") S4 and if I am not mistaken myself, the ABS control module part numbers are identical (I can verify over lunch in a couple hours) except for what i believe is the manufacture date portion of the sticker, which shows that the one I purchased is less than a month older than the one that was in my car.
I can email the guy to see if he has and old scan of the car saved some where in order to pull the WSC if you think that would be helpful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you again for the help. It is very much appreciated.

you're correct, I was conflating wheel speed sensor (from previous unsuccessful attempts to diagnose the problem) with steering angle sensor that needs to be recalibrated after setting the soft coding/WSC is set.

That might be a thing. Some ABS/ESP units have a Basic Settings feature to run the ABS/ESP pump in Basic Settings to bleed it of air, but it's unclear if you have that feature available, or if that feature would actually release the existing line pressure you seem to have. There are three drop down options in the basic setting for the 5.3 version, one of which is to bleed the system. In my previous attempts to address the issue i have clicked on that & I can hear what sounds like a pump working for a second or two, but the brake pedal remains stuck as it is now. If I end up having to do it manually, I will make sure to take precautionary steps as noted!

PartsLink24 shows 8D0 907 389 E to be legitimate for your ABS/ESP controller, post-VIN split in 2001.

I'm still really wondering how you managed to get in a hydraulically locked-up situation. Can we have you eyeball the hydraulic half of the ABS pump? Its part number won't show up in a scan, and it needs to be compatible with the controller. Not knowing the history of the car, I wonder if the a wrong/used one got in there at some point. It's happened before.

abspumpparts.jpg

The VIN split makes this really confusing in PL24, but I think we want to see one of 8E0614111T, 8E0614111AA, 8E0614111AS, or 8E0614111AT.

I have to get back to work myself. I'll reply to the rest later tonight.

As I understand it, Audi added ESP in the post-VIN split and consequently the parts changed for the ABS hydraulic unit. The control module that sits on top of the hydraulic unit failing in the the pre-VIN split models is a common problem, but that is less of a problem for my model b/c they moved the control module to under the rear bench and there are only solenoids attached to the hydraulic unit which rarely fail (according to module masters https://modulemaster.com/rebuilds/wp-content/plugins/WooCommerce-car-filter/include/product_filter.php?make=1&model=43&syear=345), but maybe that's the problem in my case, esp. considering the hydraulic lock up.

Part No: 8D0 907 389 E <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< NEIN!

Nein repair kit!
8E0-614-111AT Nein E! You have ESP
"1AT"
I think you're looking at the wrong thing...

* The E-suffixed hydraulic+control complete assembly 8E0 614 111 E (which would indeed be wrong, current part is 8E0 614 111 AT with older superseded variants as I laid out earlier).

* The E-suffixed control unit 8D0 907 389 E (which is what's in the scan, and probably okay for his ESP car, but see below)

Normally PL24 tells you exactly which components belong, by PR code, but PL24 makes a total hash of representing which equipment is right for OP's car. I had to dig around a bit when I was looking earlier. Looks like maybe ETKA does better.

In retrospect, OP's comments about the hydraulics and electronics being physically separated in a mid-year change does illuminate the situation a bit. No "repair kit" for the 8E0 614 111 AT assembly now makes more sense, since it's now a fully separate module.

That said, PL24 makes it very unclear which of the three listed ESP control modules are definitely correct. All three are listed under 927-000-15 for the physically separated control module instead of (1) for the repair kit, PL24 grays out none of the invalid matches as it should, none of them list PR codes, and the two with VIN splits don't match his VIN characters.

I saw no compelling evidence that 8D0 907 389 E is wrong, other than no match on the VIN split, and apparently it's what his car and at least one more came with. If no match on the VIN split is meaningful here, it's possible he needs 4B0 907 389 instead of what he's got. Perhaps you could look to see what ETKA says?

OP states.........

Yes Jason indeed you are correct but both of you ref you are showing is for the ABS pump/controller in your picture or wording not the actual ESP controller...........until now you are... :)

The ABS controller and ESP module are two separate modules.........

FYI based on VIN break the A is the correct ESP module not the E

I wasn't aware that they were physically separated on this model-year (or any other Bosch 5.3) so that was educational. Rest of it still stands though, whether the electronics-to-hydraulics distance is 1.5 meters or 0.0 meters. Need to make sure they're both a compatible match and correct for the car.

X is before Y if I remember correctly.......
True, but neither "X" nor "Y" are a "1":

WAURD68D01A125434

So neither >>8D-X-400000 nor >>8D-Y-000001 match, unless my education is incomplete in the matter of interpreting mid-year VIN splits, which is certainly possible. Feel free to educate me.

Apologies for the misnomers, here are the pics:

Both controllers (?), the one plugged in is the original and the other is the recently purchased one.

You're okay Jason
On further reflection, that X/Y may be their only way to express a mid-year split where they restarted the VIN numbers from zero. That "1" reflects the model year, so they obviously can't change that part mid-year. So you might be onto something with that X before Y. ;)

I seriously hate all mid-year facelifts and VIN splits.

Thanks! 8E0 614 111 T is definitely valid for your car.

so if I'm reading the above correctly, I should be replacing the smaller ESP controller-module-thingy (technical term) instead of the ABS controller....AND FODing
I think (Jack, feel free to jump in) we've concluded that 8D0 907 389 E is valid for your car as well. But seriously, screw VIN splits. :banghead:

I'll reply to the rest of your earlier questions later tonight.

FUN STUFF HUH?

X = >1999
Y = >2000
01 = >2001

Everything says to me because 2.7T APB I would be looking at the 4B0-907-389 but maybe we should go check other 2001 auto-scan's on the web & because data on the Etka and the Link are kind of shitty in this quadrant.

We should be investigating the virtual further......... start finding scans guys.

Be back later........
