Hi All,
Hoping that I can :
1) introduce myself
2) get verified - (and I sent off a reg form)...
3) post my question -- and get some feedback
4) understand VCDS and my car a bit better.

I've had a few Audis over time and invested in VCDS cable VIA Ross Tech's UK RESELLER ilexa..
I just traced the order back to Oct 2015!
Looking at the pages its a HEX-USB+CAN = HUC.
Anyway I've used this on a A4Avant b4 v6 and then its replacement a C5 S6. Its been useful to autoscan and fix simple issues and clear codes down. I've only used the auto-scan function so far to do simple checks (sporadically) and between services/oil changes etc and this has pointed me in the right direction for basic repairs/garage mechanic instruction. I've never used this in anger so to speak..and herein lies the issue as I need to use VCDS in a more intense and investigative manner.

So to my post/problem.

I've recently noticed a slight hesitation sluggish/shudder often at low-ish revs when wanting to accelerate at low idle speeds which was occasional and I didnt really think much about it - under load it seemed to disappear and I put this down to perhaps poor fuel or some built up (as I do little mileage and often in town (limited speed) trips.) I'll take it for a quick dual carriageway/motorway blast and no real issues.
But then more recently this developed into what I can describe as a noisey exhaust (like a possible flexi crack/downpipe which I had on the V6 2.8 A4)) accompanied by backfire/misfire under slight revs.. an ignition/timing problem?. The car sounds "off" in terms of timing and judders slightly. I got the car up on a ramp and checked (quickly) for exhaust blows/joints cracks/holes..as this was what its sounded like. Nothing doing there - it seemed fine.

So began reading/searching -(I've got some concerns after all its an 18 yo car.. and despite its relatibely low mileage (136580km-84866mi) its still in the range for things to start going wrong...) Having said that I've done regular maintenance and changed all the usual suspects..including :
regular (yearly oil / filter /air filters)
new battery (initial one failed)
brake fluid + disks/pads
the major cambelt / aux belts /water pump/ tensioners/thermostat sender + otherbits (fuel pump) + Spark plugs (Jan 2017).
Coolant + Expansion tank.
The fluids in the ZF box - changed ATF fluid + filter/etc..in early 2016 when I first got the car

So ran a AutoScan today:

Some points..
A little concerned that the 01119 - Gear Recognition Signal came up as not seen this before.

Not so worried about these..seen these :
01592 - Air Quality Sensor (G238)
32-00 - Resistance Too High
01592 - Air Quality Sensor (G238)
37-00 - Faulty
need to clear/check the area..

All the central locking errors 've seen before and is a bit odd but not overly concerned..
as also TV Tuner CD/ - I had a aftermarket touchscreen satnav/media player installed in lieu of the old Nav..seems some circuits are still open.

So I decided - despite some "minor" errors above to try to access Control Module.
And Selected 01 Engine
The car was idling - and I was able to get into this.
But the values in groups 10-19 weren't showing...
I couldnt see if any of my 8 cylinders were missfiring.

I'm suspecting either a faulty spark plug (not likely as ALL 8 were OEM spec NGK and replaced Jan 2017) or a COIL PACK..more likely..but I'm trying to see if VCDS can support/indicate where/which one to look at ...I'm not fancying taking ALL 8 off if I dont need to!
Or could the MAF be at fault here? Would this give such behaviour?

Any pointers? - Am I using the right file/VCDS options/useage?
Its a 4B Audi A6/S6 C5 platform for sure but is there something I should be doing differently?
Why can't I see cylinder missfires? How can I validate / check this?

Thanks in advance for your patience/ help and any pointers.

UK guy in France..

Hello and welcome to the VCDS community. Good TS, no lack of info there... How many kilomètres have you done since last service January 2017? Air filter has been replaced?

I suspect your ECU does not support misfire recognition/detection. This was required in the US market, but not in the EU at the time your car was new.

-Uwe-

PS: Thanks for registering. I've flipped you to Verified and I'm moving this to the Car Repair section.

iichel -thanks for the quick reply..

I'm due to change the Air Filter/Oil + filter.. its probably about 10-12k..
{I have the replacement MANN (air) Filter ready to drop in..waiting for the other pieces to turn up}

Why - do you think this might cause the lumpy/misfire?

OK
So nothing beats getting the covers off...
Was thinking I'd start with checking the state of the air filter - as suggested above.
I was able to see immediately as soon I as I had got the engine covers off..

The linkage arms (manifold intake) were shot / both broken. This explains a bit.. now how to sort this all out!
I think I'll be ordering some from the US .. Any suggestions/advice - and how do I know if its 1" or 2.25" short or long arms.. the middle section is broken!
(Gruven or Delrin??)

Thanks

If you're in France and you can get some stuff fro Germany, that's probably by far the cheapest option, i.e. eBay.de, kfz-teile profis, VW/Audi dealerships.
If you're in need but a seller doesn't ship to France, I'd be happy to relay it to you from Germany.

Thanks iichel

I bought the bullit..well I paid for the Gruvenparts..
I cant believe there are no European distributers of these (somewhat overengineered) linkage arms..
http://www.gruvenparts.com/audi-vw-4-2-v8-intake-manifold-linkage-arms/

FWIW - I relooked and had a fiddle with the old...to check if the levers(sprung) actually moved.. if they didnt I reckon I had more issues than just replacing these linkage arms. They were fine. So I looked at them in "normal" postion with inflated vacumm pod..and could see they are 1" type. So I'll be waiting for a few days whilst these wing their way from the US.

So mini update - I'm still awaiting delivery of the Gruven (Aluminium/Delrin) linkage arms.
It's part of the issue - not convinced if I replace these that all my engine (sluggish/lumpy/exhaust)..But I will wait to fit these and see what changes.
I'm concerned that these have been like this for a while - especially cold start up - thats the SAI valve set up / Motronic subsystem with stage 2 and 3 intake manifold flaps.
The danger/risk is that the fuel/air mix has been wrong..and that I've got CAT damage - misfire/backfire exhaust noise.

So I took the chance to change the AIR Filter - it was due and will save me a job later. Bit mucky but I've seen way worse.
In doing so I took the opportunity to clean the intake box and also removed the central pipe work with the MAF attached to clean the housing/pipework to the MAF. Havent touched (ie MAF itself) this - no evidence this is "wrong". Refitted and put in new AIR Filter (MANN). In refitting the Airbox / filter housing theres a lower airpipe (i noticed a rubber 0 ring had perised) and it seems this will be needed for a seal/tight fit.
I may have to customise something here. I dont want to buy the whole pipe! Cant seem to find a 30mm radius x 2 mm rubber ring locally. I'd like a good seal on this return pipe so can discount any Vacuum issues.
I'll rescan after fitting everything when it turns up!
May need some advice/tips on what to scan / look for in coilpack behaviour...

Thanks
