    2014/15 MK7 Golf, MQB, ACC system faults

    Car is September 2014 build and 2015 model MK7 Golf Estate, GT spec, with loads of options & UK market, & has never had these faults before & never had any faults with the Radar unit, since I bought the car new 3 1/2yrs ago.

    This thread is a tricky one to start as the fault codes have been caused by an aftermarket device IMHO., & based on before & after scans & observation. The whole info on this bloody awful mess is mainly posted on the MK7 Golf forum here in this thread where I am under the user name "golfdave":-

    Be warned there is a bit of "pre-amble" to the current situation so without re-posting here please read the above post. But to put it as succinctly as possible:-

    Car scanned all ok no fault codes.
    Autopolar unit fitted, go for drive, ACC & front assist (as both use the Radar) "Not available". Return home.

    Currently the car has one fault code which will not clear even after a 10 mile drive to shops, park, then drive 10 miles back.

    I have googled various references to the ACC unit & I know about the full dealer laser level, box, domino boards etc. However after web looking etc I found threads on here & Audi forums about the resetting procedure for some of the values which does not involve the domino boards etc..however they refer the older version of VCDS....

    As I do not have an image account I have posted screen shots of relevant options in the "13" Auto dist. reg" module on page two of the MK7 Golf thread mentioned & linked to above.

    Vertical & horizontal deviation are both below the 0.5 spec...so ok...but the misalignment angle is -2.62deg & the "fast" version is -2.89deg...with the vertical dead adjustment -4.250deg!!....


    Help!!...

    P.S. the fault code "Address 17: Instruments" was created because the Autopolar unit shows in the MFD in the OEM "Audio" screen ..so you get no display of "Audio" title etc in screen...all buttons work on MFSW

    So after loads of Google-foo, reading the ERWIN manuals, & digging out what I learnt when I did surveying & using laser levers, EDM systems etc...I have a good theory...just need to carry it out when the weather is dry!

    Basically the radar unit like a good self levelling laser/EDM system needs to set up "roughly level" then the unit itself can fine tune internally/calculate for.

    So the complex bit is getting the Radar unit in the correct position on the car in relation to the road & the cars driving position. This is why there is a complex method of having the car on a level ramp/four post lift, wheel alignment to check the front & rear axles are aligned with each other (Thrust angle), then making certain that the measuring board is correctly square/parallel to the car & lift, then bounce laser (set up at precise location on jig parallel with car) off mirror on Radar unit, & reflection of laser should hit the board in a pre-determined spot.

    All the above does is allow you to then adjust the three levelling/bolts/screws/legs of the Radar unit, until the laser beam is reflected onto the correct spot. Thus the Radar unit is correctly mounted square/parallel & will be pointing its beam at the correct angle onto the road.

    Once the beam is correctly set up you basically "tell" the unit that its current position is "zero" (like "tare" on a weighing scale), & to store this as "Zero point" so it can then work from this, no matter the cars position on the road, which it will get from the rear level sensor, & the gyroscopic sensors (used for the ESC etc) mounted on the central tunnel behind the gear stick.

    Now after this complex "calibration" process the unit does what it wants & self learns, & will compensate/adjust internally/calculate/fine tune. This internal process, reading the links & using logical sense from what laser/EDM surveying systems do is "re-settable", i.e. if the actual physical position of the Radar unit on the car is as per the last "full calibration" then the unit needs to told to erase the current "learnt values" & go back to "zero/tare" & re-learn new internal "fine tune" values.

    So how to do this?
    Firstly you need to make 100% certain that the Radar unit is physically back where is should be, clean, cover correctly clipped in place, etc., etc.. Then using VCDS:-
    you enter the module [13-Auto Dist. Reg],
    then go into [Advance Measuring Values],
    & what you want to read are:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle
    IDE01785 - Vertical angle deviation
    IDE01786 - Horizontal angle deviation
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment

    The physical position of the Radar unit readings are "85" & "86" & apparently should be between -0.800 and +0.800. If your readings are outside of this, its a dealer job as the whole "zero point/tare" needs to be reset as the unit is physically "out".

    Mine is currently showing +0.109 & -0.394 so well within spec.

    However my:-
    "84" is -2.62,
    "23" is -2.89,
    "06" is -4.25,

    Apparently the units will re-learn on a drive. So I did a 20mile drive but it did nothing! Why? I realised afterwards & from reading the other links above that I had only done 10miles then parked (ignition switched off), then 10 miles back again. You need to do 20 miles in one go & you need to be following a car at varying distances with the ACC turned on (so the warning light on dash will be lit). I only had it "ON" for the first journey, & there was NO traffic as late evening, so no cars to follow!

    Anyway to be 100%, the best way apparently is to re-set the learnt values to tell the unit that "zero point/tare" is OK & thus ok re-learn again so:-

    So again using VCDS:-
    you enter the module [13-Auto Dist. Reg],
    then go into [Basic Settings],
    & from the drop down menu select:- IDE02163-ENG114972-Reset misalignment angle

    Then go on a 20 to 30mile drive with traffic, preferably with long straights at various speeds, following cars in front & with the ACC switched on showing the warning light. This will go out after it has re-learnt the "fine tune".

    As it is raining here it is not the best situation for the Radar to re-learn,, dryer weather forecast tomorrow & the day after...so here's finger crossed!!

    Normally you only need to do a radar basic setting making sure that your car is parked close to 1.2m from a suitable perpendicular surface (ie brick wall) when the calibration is run.
    In O**S there are 2 calibration routines - static and active. Static is just up against a wall and normally is enough to calibrate the radar.
    Active requires driving for some time, at speeds below and above 60km/h (I think?) and ideally with a vehicle in front at some point for the radar to find.
    But the important part is having your car parked 90 degrees to a wall at close to 1.2m distance from the radar module in order to perform the static test.

    Not talking about ODIS...I'm talking about VCDS & what that program extracts from the modules & what you can do with that programme to address the ACC issue. If you look at the thread I linked to on MK7 Golf Forum in my first post, I posted up screen shots of what VCDS shows in the various options of the "13 Auto Dist Reg" module...

    This are the procedures which others have tried on other VAG cars & in older versions of VCDS..pre the "IDE" prefix that we now have.

    So did the "reset misalignment angle" as above...it will ask for Security access, so go back & enter it & the balloon gives two codes depending on test/function..for this test its the 14117 code. Then switch ignition off, lock car, wait for 5mins then went for a drive.

    So had the ACC/front assist active so the icons in dash were there but greyed out to start with for first couple of miles as in town..then decided to actually have the speed cruise set at 60mph on 60mph roads & actively following cars in front....so it then brakes if they are going slower....I had the distance set mid to long & to start with & it was getting way too close (as its learning)..so I had to step on the brakes, which "stops" the ACC...more like "pause"...I suppose.

    Anyway after 24miles I parked did some shopping, the AC was not too bad before parking. Anyway 40mins later drive 2 miles back home & driving around some bends with the ACC on& active it was getting way too close so had to step on the brakes....& then the dash threw up "ACC not available" & the warning light on dash also lit up.

    Get home run autoscan, both of the fault codes in the "13 Auto Dist Reg." were there...so the "vertical misalignment" fault came back....& the "horizontal misalignment" stayed there..

    However looking at the measurements it had tried as
    "84" is -2.26 (was -2.62)
    "23" is -2.77 (was -2.89)
    "06" is -4.131 (was - 4.25)

    I'll give it another two goes with the reset procedure..then its dealer time & I'll be billing the UK importer of the Autopolar unit....

    P.S. do you think I ought to drive the car /reset procedure with the ACC on , but not active...eg in "pause" mode with the dash icon greyed out?...will it learn like this or does it need to be actually following the cars & active eg actually acting a cruise control???

    Solved!! & future watch points for all ACC units!

    OK so pushed the car out of the garage to give me loads of room to have yet another close inspection of the Radar unit. Clean, yep, remove cover, & wiggle the unit is it firm?...yep...have another look, do the adjustable bolts/screws look ok & do the brackets all look fine?...yep!...So very close inspection of the two adjustable screws (top left & bottom right as top right is a non-adjustable fixed plastic leg)....bolts appear to be closer to the bottom left prongs in the plastic captive nut which the bolts sit in.....Hmmmmm.......so the unit must be leaning towards the bottom left...so grasp the unit with left hand & left thumb on top right of unit....now wiggle unit...& it moves slightly!!...AARRGGGHH.....so wiggle the unit & it goes back in with a nice "click"...double check everything!..& wiggle in every direction...NOW its totally firm!!. Basically the top right non-adjustable leg was "out" of one set of its prongs but still partially held firm & looked all ok & "in"!!

    So using VCDS carry out the "reset misalignment angle". Then exit VCDS & switch ignition off & key out, close door, wait for MFD to go out. Then go back in with VCDS & now you can clear the hard DTC codes in the "13 Auto Dist. Reg." unit & VCDS actually zeros the following lines:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment

    Went for a nice long drive (110miles), had to do 15miles to get to the main dual carriageway road which I mainly use the ACC on as its 60 & 70mph & with average speed cameras!! So did about 80miles all told on 60 & 70mph roads following trucks at 50mph & cars at other times doing 70mph. Even had some emergency stopping to do due to idiots...ACC & front assist all work 100%!!

    Got home did full autoscan....NO FAULTS!!

    Went into module [13-Auto Dist. Reg],
    then go into [Advance Measuring Values],
    & again read:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle (now -0.06)
    IDE01785 - Vertical angle deviation (still 0.109)
    IDE01786 - Horizontal angle deviation (still -0.394)
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm (now -0.12)
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment (now 0.211)

    Basically well within spec!! It appears that the "IDE01785 - Vertical angle deviation", & "IDE01786 - Horizontal angle deviation" are not the actual readings of the unit on the bracket in "live time". BUT the actual reading of the unit on the bracket when the last full calibration was carried out! ..ie how the unit was left!

    So how does this leave me -vs- the Autopolar unit? Well I have apologised & explained to the UK importer re the ACC as its so coincidental its not true! Even he couldn't believe it! Anyway it does not remove the facts that the Autopolar still creates:-

    This is due to the fact the Autopolar unit "breaks" into the Audio screen in the MFD to display the Autopolar info gained from the CAN Gateway. Also the fact that they have totally messed up the screen display compared to either the MK6/MK6 Golf units (PF03) they made & compared to the OEM VW telephone contacts display in the MFD. Instead of having the description writing tabbed to the left of the screen & the numerical values tabbed to the right of the screen & all four parameter lines having same size...they have each line self centring in the middle of the screen & expanding evenly outwards left & right as the numerical values alter. This is very distracting when you have several parameter which constantly alter rapidly eg power/boost/nm...& the whole lot looks like an accordion playing! Also the top two lines in every screen have smaller writing than the bottom two lines...not slightly, but by quite a difference!

    So what have we learnt? Check the radar units VERY closely & grasp it in different ways! In my case NOTHING had hit it to dislodge it from the bracket & NO damage as like new. However what I think is the only explanation is that the unit is bolted hard to the car, so every pothole, speedbump etc. is passed through those mountings...I recon that over time it was being "bounced" out of the mounting & by pure chance the final "bounce" happened when I had the Autopolar unit on the car...& this final bounce was enough to throw up the ACC fault codes!!

    As I can't edit the above post I'll post this for extra clarity as having re-read this section its not 100% clear:-

    "So using VCDS carry out the "reset misalignment angle". Then exit VCDS & switch ignition off & key out, close door, wait for MFD to go out. Then go back in with VCDS & now you can clear the hard DTC codes in the "13 Auto Dist. Reg." unit & VCDS actually zeros the following lines:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment


    Should read as:-

    So using VCDS:-
    you enter the module [13-Auto Dist. Reg],
    then go into [Basic Settings],
    & from the drop down menu select:- IDE02163-ENG114972-Reset misalignment angle.

    Then exit VCDS & switch ignition off & key out, close door, wait for MFD to go out.

    Now I decided to investigate further (you don't need to do this):-
    Went into module [13-Auto Dist. Reg],
    then go into [Advance Measuring Values],
    & again read:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle (now 0.000)
    IDE01785 - Vertical angle deviation (still 0.109)
    IDE01786 - Horizontal angle deviation (still -0.394)
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm (now 0.000)
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment (now 0.000)

    So VCDS actually zeros the following "learnt values" lines:-
    IDE01784 - Misalignment angle
    IDE02523 - Misalignment angle: fast algorithm
    IDE09906 - Vertical deadjustment

    What you need to do next is go back into the [13-Auto Dist. Reg] module with VCDS & now you can clear the hard DTC codes in there as you have effectively carried out the "reset to zero of learned values" so there are no values outside of spec to trigger an immediate fault code.

    Now you need to go on a suitable drive (as before discussed above) of at least 30miles with the ACC active for it to re-learn those three values which have been "zeroed".

    Your radar sensor is different. ACC BOSCH MQB H04 0194 / ACCBOSCHVW48X vs. ACC Bosch MQB H05 0304 / ACCMRRBoschVW372.

    The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.
