So, my cute little Polo Bluemotion is perfectly fine except for that it's broken in a very annoying way.
It has decided not to waste anymore energy on power steering. Not the best thing to happen with 215 wide tires. 01288 and 00566 DTCs.

It all started when the fire nation attacked of course. But yesterday, during a normal drive, I suddenly lost power steering on the highway.
No light, no notification, just failed. I pulled over and checked the fuse in the battery compartment for the thick wire and the fuse for Terminal 15. Both were OK.
Switched off the engine and restarted, but no effect. Tested steering angle sensor; static cornering lights were OK. So, the problem was hereby isolated to the power steering pump system.

Today I took some more time to pull off the connectors and inspect them for water ingress. Nothing special to see, no copper green discolouration and verified resistance and voltage with multimeter.
CAN, power, GND, all good. Battery voltage is well above 12V, and engine starts and runs without any hassle. Generator produces a healthy 14.4V as well.

I was able to enter the pump with VCDS and interrogate the advanced measurement values.
+15 was OK but +30 was 1.86V, rather less than the 14.x V measured at the connector.
So I gave both ends of the connector a quick squirt of WD40 and a good wash with a cotton swab.

Did some googling for 01288 and this is mostly pointing to fuses and battery. I connected the wire to a different fuse of 200A and still no regain of function.

So I'm now with my - very muscular- hands in the proverbial hairs (this joke works better in my Dutch mother tongue, forgive me).

scan, the errors in 09 and 55 are due to the headlight being removed for acces to the SA pump.

Sounds like a conductor (or contact?) inside the pump has failed?

Have you got some way of measuring current being pulled by that terminal 30?

Well my multimeter only goes up to 10A. After that, I'll have to settle for a 5A gap while burning fuses (15A 20A 25A 30A 40A)

Somehow, I doubt it's drawing much, if anything.

But as a general trouble-shooting technique: You can use a fuse as a current-measuring shunt. Put a known load on the fuse (e.g. a headlight bulb). Measure voltage drop across the fuse (millivolts). This will allow you to calculate the resistance of the fuse. Then replace the known load with the unknown load and measure voltage drop across the fuse again. Since you know the resistance of the fuse and the voltage drop across it, you can easily calculate the current being drawn by the unknown load.

I'll first give it a shot with a regular 10A fuse. If it survives, it's safe for the multimeter.
But as you say, it probably won't draw a lot of current, the pump motor is certainly not powered.

Hey iichel............ ;)

Run an additional heavy ground strap to the unit pump motor directly and see if it helps.

Hi Jack! Thanks for thinking along with me. Ran a new 16mm2 wire to GND point and additionally, cleaned the GND point and all the other wires on it, without any result.

It was worth a shot .......

I have had good luck cleaning up the pump motors internally & when they die due to corrosion making way inside, if power/ground is actually at the module and pump.

Not one so far couldn't be revived other than collision damage cars.

Will do Jack. First I'll get my hands on some hydraulic fluids and a spare pump that can be returned, if not needed.

Here in the USA we use the Pentosin 202 or if me anything you can find if it is my own just to see if it causes destruction.... :p

So far ATF of all types tried here works fine, with exception in cold weather below 10 degrees F is slightly noisy but works and noise subsides if engine is warmed up so who cares I figure.

Jack, I'm calling defeat on this pump. I'm afraid there is no way of reaching its electrical guts.
The upper part with the pump mechanics can be opened but the lower part is sealed off.

Another update. Is anyone still reading? Probably, yes. If not, too bad, you're missing out on great stuff...
So I put the pump back and there is still the Terminal 30 and Steering Assist operation DTC as before. So I haven't been able to repair the pump so far, that's a bit of a pity.
I suspect corrosion damage since there was indeed some water ingress.
But I can only reach one side of the PCB so I'll have to find a trick to get to the other side.

For now, dealing with the situation and I'm looking into fitting an oil-less system in the passenger compartment, nice and dry.
But that will take some time since I'm running into some G85 issues. But as soon as the time is there' I'll put some effort into doing that properly.

I put the car back together now without the pump and took the opportunity to re-organise some wiring in the front left for the new headlights, twin tone fanfare etc.
So I guess that's the positive. Tidying up wiring always makes me happy.

FYI, you've got a rare(-ish, at least as far as we're concerned in the US) module that uses TP1.6 (probably 1281, which is even rarer) for diagnostics with that pump. I'd keep it and put it on a bench to talk to scan tools, if you don't have space constraints :)

Don't give up man.... Pull pin/clip if supported and it pulls
Right out. Heat with heat gun!
The shaft can be tapped with plastic punch or brass.
I am skilled with the air hammer and they pop right out.
Eric will vouch he has seen me be nimble with wiper arms at lower windshield with mini butane torch and use the vibrations to get penetrating fluid in.
Shove the whole unit in ultra sound tank with oven cleaner and water or CLR.

Hi Jack, yes, I already came this far. The thing is, I can't to the bottom of the PCB, on the other side.
Technically it's the top and I think that's where any moisture could stick and corrode. I'm afraid this has been the case.
I can't get a proper clean of the top unfortunately. I can't see how to get of the PCB off the pump body.

Very good!

Now tap hit it out from the reverse side.

Spray the pins and soak them in the plastic plug to board with fluid so they extract easy.

If afraid soak the whole thing in oven cleaner and aerate the water in bucket then dry out with heat gun and give it a try.

or

Muscle fuck it and extract everything with brute force & so you can see how to do it for the future as a training lesson!
