When i use the VCDS to scan the car engine module i inevitably get the following error which returns immediately upon clearing:

16985 - Internal Control Module
P0601 - 001 - Memory Check Sum Error - MIL ON

first of all - my MIL won't ever illuminate. i suspect this is due to the MTM chip installed as i do recall seeing it when the stock chip is returned and key in ignition. However, the error remains even when stock chip is re-installed.

my question is twofold - is there a way to fix this error short of a new/refurb. ECU (i.e. can it be repaired by myself?), and also, would this error prevent me from cycling the ABS bleed procedure?

when i try to start the ABS procedure with the 'start' button in output tests, it just does nothing and forces me to hit 'done'. the ABS system has no errors, it's 5.7 and the system operates fine. i've tried the generic login and also the soft codes version. Neither avenue helps in activating the ABS pump. Nor did trying to activate it w/ brake pedal depressed or car running.

I can run the test just fine on my audi a6 2000 with the same cable and laptop, so i don't think they're the problem.

Any/all insight greatly appreciated. i think i have a pretty good grasp of the car as i've removed the engine (twice...), replaced fuel tank, rebuilt the turbos, alternator, replaced an intake valve and master cylinder amongst other frustrating procedures. So don't hesitate to suggest solutions that seems too deep in the weeds, although simple solutions are obviously preferred. ;-)

I would imagine there are people who could probably fix that, but I don't visualize it as a DIY project.

Where are you seeing a bleed procedure for this ABS that calls for the use of a scan-tool?

We generally appreciate users posting a complete Auto-Scan, which often contains valuable context.

Most likely your problem with ECU internal fault is you MTM chip.Second hand ECU can be install , but If you put used ECU , it has to be programed , it is not plug and play.
Is the chip mounted in ECU our like plug to ECU harness?

For ABS like UWE said post autoscan .

Out of curiosity , why you want to bled your brakes if your working good like you mention?

I had a brake pedal that would fall to the floor if pushed with enough effort. I solved the problem - which i'll discuss in another post as it may help others in my situation - but until then I had assumed there was air in the ABS pump/module.

so, for the bleeding procedure that calls for a scan tool I went to ABS brakes (3), output tests (3), and start/next. as soon as I hit that button I get output test sequence complete. there is no activation of the ABS pump whatsoever. thanks!

You may be right w/ the internal fault source, but i did ship the ECU to the original installer who bench-tested it. he found the chip slightly dislodged, but otherwise it passed his tests - for whatever that's worth. he then returned the ECU to me along w/ the OE chip. that's why i said when i swapped chips and continued to see the check sum error i felt it was the ECU at fault. the chip is mounted onto the ECU board's pins, not plugged into the harness, if that helps.

brakes are working well now solely b/c of the recent bleedings. over the course of 2-3 years the brakes got new pads/rotors, new brake lines and i put in a new master cylinder. so obviously i introduced air into the system. long story short, the solution i found was to retract the pistons fully then power bleed. i had bubbles hanging out within the calipers' piston bores. This was hugely magnified due to fact the front calipers have 8 pistons each. So now with the vacuum assist purged post-shut off, the pedal play is limited to the movement within the brake booster itself and not much more.

until i discovered this trick myself, i had been resigned to thinking air must be within the ABS pump and because i couldn't activate it i was going to have to live with it. thanks.

Hello , if I am right this car has ME 7.1.1. ecu. This dtc I saw several times on remapped me 7.1.1 cars. But mostly a tuner can fix it. But it's really strange that the problem remains when ecu is put back to stock.

As far as I know the mil lamp on does not affect driveability of the car, but when light is always on, you won't notice other issues.

Best regards

John

thank you John. i believe you are correct ME 7.1.1. i mailed the tuner my ecu with the MTM chip (after i noticed the Check sum error) and he was unable to see the error, which confounds me.

As for the MIL lamp, it's not so much drivability, it's the fact it NEVER comes on - even when a scan shows a code indicating "MIL on". Nor does it appear when i initially inset the key before start-up. Yet i know the MIL lamp itself works as it does briefly show up on start-up w/ the stock chip reinstalled. So is this a known manifestation of the MTM chip mod? In hindsight i'm led to believe MTM was not the best choice for chipping the RS6, but i'm not about to cry about spilt milk.

Is there a definitive answer in terms of the repairability of the ecu (via flashing?)? And if the answer is that i'll need another ECU, is that a simple plug and play or is there a dealer intervention necessary?

I gave you answer in Post #3,
no it is not plug and play. But do not need to go to dealer . I can do programing if you need it.
Also it does not have to be new ECU, you can get used ECU as well and it can be programed.

I program my ecu's for identity transfer "free".............. ;)

I bet I can make you a backup of that shitty chip to CD file.

Then you can get that POS soldered tower out of that ECU & load the file to an off road unit with no VIN number for race track.

you're right, i mis-read your point to mean aftermarket chips being plug/play.

so you're contending the only solution with an ECU check sum error is replacement (used or new)?

In other words your programming and/or dealer flashing won't solve the problem because the unit itself is faulty?

thanks for all the feedback. long story short - i mailed the ECU to MTM in germany. they sent back a generic ECU with a soldered MTM chip on it. that eliminated the ECU check sum error code. 2 ECU repair shops previously passed on fixing this unit.

i'm still not able to cycle the abs pump, but i think now it's more of a function of the ABS hardware that came with the car. The check sum error had permanently turned off the MIL light and failed to notify of secondary air injection issues. and that's just what i was able to catch.

so thanks again. this ticks off a box that really bothered me. with all the work i've done (turbos, fuel tank, oil cooler, valve, suspension, etc.), i'm down to replacing a few squeaky poly bushings with stock ones - which is a nice problem to have vis-a-vis past issues.

(headlight error was just due to disconnected range finder)
