Does anyone from Ross Tech knows why those fields are disabled?

Maybe because of security access?

I just checked Adaptation in 19-CAN Gateway on my US-spec MQB (which has a different gateway from yours) and the fields were populated and able to be changed. In fact, I saved that value as "not installed" and got a fault code for :

8782089 - Controls in Steering Wheel
U108F 00 [008] - Implausible Signal

KAG9nEh.png

Dunno if it's related but you have an equipment number with more than 5 digits. You may want to try going into Options then User Interface and enter the following for WSC, Importer, and Equipment

54321
444
54321

Then Apply and go into 19-CAN Gateway then Installation List and Save coding without making any changes. That should cause the module to have plausible values stored.

Hey Andy,

thanks for the quick reply.

You gave me a hope, but nothing. Just came from the car, without success. It's still disabled.

img7101.jpg

Not sure what else to try, except replacing can gateway to high, if that is possible.

In theory, like my MF steering wheel doesn't have power, because there is no light for the buttons. But I guess it's because there is no communication with can.

Just a guess, maybe it's not possible to select new value because there isn't an old value. Whatever reason, maybe the gateway being low version.

Possible, but that means gateway is coming with predefined values?

Does anyone know when I replace can gateway, and if something goes wrong, I can always roll back to my default gateway and all values will be there?

Thanks

Andy: as indicated in my previous post, that adaptation channel channel has the same value in my Golf. But we both have the slave control module for the CAN Gateway fitted to our cars.

Just from a logic perspective, if milos' car is missing the multi function unit control module unit ( i.e. Subsystem 2), doesn't the observed behaviour suggest that access to this adaptation channel (and channel (5)- I'm guessing) is dependent on the slave module being fitted? Or am I missing something (which is entirely possible).

Like I know, MF unit control module is tied by default in MF steering wheel. It's not separate like on Golf MK6.
But seems I can't enable it until I get new can gateway. Who knows, hard to say. Trying to compare all auto scans from MK7 with MF and everyone has that Subsystem under CAN.

I will be more than happy to resolve this puzzle and contribute with the success result.

Milos: OK - my apology Andy, I had assumed that the slave module was a separate item-like the mk6. You're probably correct about having to buy the "mid" CAN Gateway, but as the multifunction unit is already installed, is there any chance at all of "tricking" your existing CAN Gateway into seeing the slave module? I have no idea whether this will work, but as a totally uneducated suggestion could this be done by changing the coding string in address 19?

Do any of the VCDS Gurus here know whether this is even possible? Does recognition of a slave control module (like the multifunction unit) require an actual physical connection, or is it done through a software link, or both?

Anyhow, if there is a remote chance that the CAN Gateway can be "fooled", I provide the following byte comparison for the CAN gateway module for your mk7, and a number of other mk7 vehicles (including my 103TSI Highline) that have MFSW fitted. This data is sourced mostly from auto-scans on this forum and stuff that was given to me from VWWatercooled folk. There's some valuable stuff on both forums - all one needs to do is realise its potential and to find it!!!

6tahKp3.png

As you can see, I've listed the type of CAN Gateway installed for each vehicle. I've highlighted the two Bytes that are the same for all vehicles that have MFSW fitted and where these Bytes are different to yours. Note that for both Bytes, the active Bit is Bit 0.
Logic suggests that Byte 1 and Byte 13 are the two potential enabling Bytes for the multifunction unit - if your CAN Gateway module can be tricked, then one of these are the two Bytes (or, both Bytes) might be the key!

I repeat again, I don't know whether this suggestion will (or even if it can) work. But as we "traders" say - this is a free option which you may be able to exercise at (hopefully) no additional cost! On the matter of "cost" - is there a down-side?

DV52, I appreciate all your support in this thread, you are amazing.

I tried enabling those bytes, but that didn't help. While driving, I got message "only declutch below 1300rpm", so I assume I enabled some notification and it's not related to MF.
Before that, I never got such message.

One thing is worried me, as we are discussing about coding and maybe I don't have wire between MF and gateway, which is hard to check.
When I bought MF, I expected to see buttons light with disabled buttons, but that's not happened.

Maybe I didn't say so far, but when I asked VW dealer, they said MF is not possible to add, without explanation.

(4)-Multi_function_steering_wheel_control_module Coding Value-development_1 active
Can you try to change this to not-active and see if that is going to stop your MF and change coding:28000? If you don't want to play, no worries, I understand.

Milos: No problem - they are quick changes to do.
When I changed the setting for "4)-Multi_function_steering_wheel_control_module Coding Value-development_1" to "not active" as you suggested I got some strange behaviour on the steering wheel buttons (some didn't seem to work). Put the setting back and all OK. I also changed the setting on the slave control module from Hex28000 to Hex29FFFF (Some of the auto-scan reports that I used for my previous post had this coding string). Everything seem to work OK, but I restored the setting to its original value.

Given your observation, it sounds very much like something else is needed. Perhaps the MID level CAN Gateway is necessary for the MFSW to work. The problem is that if you spend more money to buy the new CAN module and it still doesn't work - what then?

Well, I can buy on ebay for around $100 mid or high gateway, which is not too expensive, but like you said there is a good chance it won't work again.
But that's the part of retrofit, you don't know if you don't try and there is no people who tried already since the car is still new.

I am going to order one, I guess that's the last thing I can try and if nothing, possible I will rollback non-mf steering wheel :(

I also changed the setting on the slave control module from Hex28000 to Hex29FFFF

Where is this setting located? Under adaptation?

Milos: OK -I wish you all the best with the ebay purchase.

No, you don't use the adaptation channel facility to change the coding string for a slave controller. You access the slave module through the master control module. I don't have a pic of how its done for address 19, but I did make a screen-shot of how to access a slave control module of the BCM. I used the screen shot below for my instructions on VWWatercooled for the Auto RainClosing tweak. It's intended to describe how to access the coding string for the RLFS which is a slave module to the BCM. It's exactly the same for the Multifunction unit. When you get the screen for 09-Cent Elect, just press the box next to the red arrow in the center of the screen as shown

Good Luck and it has been a pleasure discussing this project with you - I've learnt much that I didn't know before our conversations

Thanks man.

Just tried that and I didn't pay attention on it so far. It's disabled on my side, so you can't select slave module in gateway. It's editable through BCM like on your screen shoot.
Definitely going to order highline version, I will keep you updated.

Then we can continue to discuss and learn something new ;-)

Stay well

Milos: Here are the two screen shots that you should see if the multifunction unit is operating correctly:

Hi Don,

thanks again. That's exactly what I am missing and hope so it will be shown when I switch different gateway. Definitely that's the place for MF
Just ordered them on ebay, hopefully it will come within few days. Until that, I will investigate what I can.

YGM, milos. I ran a controller channel map on my MQB and every adaptation channel shows SOMETHING even if it's "Mode not active " or "not active" etc.

Hi Andy, I understand it's different on your side, but I don't have answer why it's disabled on my side.
Plus I can't see my MF control slave module, it's disabled as well.

I will send debug file within hour.

Thank you for the debug file. That channel is denied a read with the error "No response from subnet component". Sounds like your gateway is missing something somewhere :) I have modified VCDS to recognize this error and properly disable the controls to avoid future confusion.

I am waiting for a new gateway, then we will see.

If everything goes well, we will have success story ;-)

Thanks for quick update.

Hi Guys,

I hope so someone is here to help me, since I am writing from car.
I just installed new can gateway, I have new MF slave module, I can see MF buttons light (so everything what I wanted), but the car went to the component protection mode, and I am not sure how to fix that.
Basically, I tried to clean errors, without luck. Car is working. except instrument cluster is blinking and radio is also in protection mode.

Any help would be more than welcome. Thanks!
