P0346 CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IMPLAUSIBLE SIGNAL INTERMITTENT (G163)

Hello

I own a Touareg 2012 V8 4.2L Fuel engine and I am having trouble with the camshaft position sensor.

It has been replaced the two sensors (g163) and (g40) and the fault is still present.

Also it has been inspected the sensor 3 plug cables and they are working as it should with the 6 volts.

The fault code appears only when you start the engine, sometimes you can hear a knock sound 2 seconds when starting, the fault frequency can appear many times before you clear again the code.

I am thinking that the knock sound is because of a loose cam adjuster or time change misaligned?

The strange sound only appears once in a while you start the engine and not always.

The condition of the oil is good.

It was changed 1,500 miles ago.

The correct engine sound term is (rattling when starting).

Prepare for mechanical tear down and check adjuster for oil feed & or damage if noise evident!

Also check that wiring and ECU is in proper order with no water ingress.

I have already checked the ECU wiring and is fine, the water drain holes are clean and tested.

Rafa, going to open myself up to criticism which I am okay with. Not familiar with the subtle nuances of the Tourage but the voltage here is only 11.75 @ idle. I have no idea if the tensioner is all hydralic, or both that and electrical, but voltage here is insufficient IMO.

This eng is chain driven. Correct oil is extremely important. Tensioners are hydraulic.
No other fault codes logged, then maybe the Central electrics made the alternator charge less at that specific rpm/load from other consumers.

Sorry for my late response but you are right, I will first check why there is only 11.75V if it should be like 14V at idle.

I keep updating the results obtained.

The oil level is correct, not yet revised the chain and hydraulic tensioners.

I will check with a multimeter the battery charge and if the alternator is charging correctly the battery and if there is a voltage drop using the vehicle.

Let you know what happened with this test.

You are right indeed, have already fixed the problem after long investigation.

The resolution was when the engine oil change was required I added the correct Castrol 5W30 and after a while it was tested and used, finally the code never appeared again. The rattle sound was caused by the incorrect oil type.
So my recommendation first before you attempt to dismantle the engine inspect the oil level & correct oil type.
