    End-------------------------(Elapsed Time: 02:56)--------------------------
Symptoms are that while driving in particularly cold weather ( for the UK ) after approx 10 mins of driving having the left the car parked in a small blizzard for a few days, I got a flashing warning saying do not exceeed 2500 rpm and the glow plug warning light started flashing. I could not rev past 2500 rpm and the car was in a sort of semi-limp mode with slightly reduced power. I stopped the car, after approx 30 mins, engine off for a few minutes, started off again. Warnings disappeared until I went past 2500 rpm whereupon the warnings came back. Oil level was fine so I just drove on for another 30 mins.

Drove back an hour or so later, no warnings and car drove normally. Scanned and found the attached.

This seems to be very similar to my experience: http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f4...ion-56577.html

Is there a measuring block value where I can check the switch position for each of the engine oil pressure switches? There appear to be at least two which are designated F22 and F1/F378. The latter two are perhaps two on the same pipework but I am not sure- it seems to depend on engine code. F22 is on the front of the engine next to the water pump, the other(s) are on the back of the engine behind the V400 electric coolant pump for the EGR cooler.

I'm fairly sure oil pressure is no issue or I would be simply crying already- so I want to test the oil pressure switches while increasing/decreasing the engine speed hence the question above.

I can access the switch direct if needed, but it's simply awkward.

If there is anyway way to know which of the pressure switches the code pertains to, that would also help.

I'll replace F22 regardless as they appear to be cheap enough- but either way a VCDS switch function check would be valuable to make a comparison.

    thanks

You should never drive a vehicle with an oil light, even with a reduced speed advisory.
Oil pressure and volume should be checked at each respective oil PSI zone & to prevent damage by isolating needed repair condition.
If in doubt which sensor is bad or a track, get a meter and tone out to identify in WD and induce an advisory to see what does what.

One of them is in the Instrument Cluster, MVB 001.3
That should be the 1.2 bar one; I would think that's the one car cares about above some threshold RPM.

I don't see anything for the other one.

The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

thanks Jack- indeed and I agree- only took the chance as it was my own car. And I was late to meet the boss! Hopefully I won't pay the price....

I ordered a genuine F22 pressure switch for the front of the engine. Audi could not advise which of two options my car had for that sensor switch. The choices were: a single pin grey or a double pin green. Mine is the latter. Given there is two options, experience suggests the part number could be the same for both so others beware.

Pressure switch part number 059919081G arrived. Cost 17. Looks like this:

    Sensor replaced. Problem remains....

I searched for 'oil' in the engine module under advanced measuring blocks and found various MVB's which appeared to be relevent.

After F22 oil pressure switch was replaced, I put a new genuine filter in and replaced oil with new genuine 507 grade 5W30 oil which I always use. The old oil had done around 6500 miles in less than 6 months.

I then ran the engine and watched the values shown in the following image:

To start with i.e. with cold oil, the second line down changed from all zeros ( as shown) to ending in a 1 at around 1200 rpm. I assume this to be the F22 oil pressure switch responding to the increase in oil pressure as engine speed increases. All was fine so far...

As oil temperature rose, 30 to 40....degC the rpm threshold for the switch to activate also rose. It was changing from zero to 1 around 2100 rpm by now.

As oil temperature rose to around 65 deg C the rpm threshold was very close to 2500 rpm. Still no errors.....and then....bingo, oil pressure warning again.

I stopped the engine, cleared the codes and started again. I could re-create the problem by trying to hold the engine at just under 2500 rpm at which point I could hear a very slight rattle ( as if oil pressure was low, chain tensioners or perhaps hydraulic valve gear?? ) and then almost immediately the same oil pressure dash warning appeared.

All the above was with the car stationary.

The last line item in the advanced measuring blocks appears to change from a 1 to a zero when the engine speed has increased. Does anyone know if this is the N428 regulation valve activating?

My next move will be to replace the N428 oil pressure regulating valve.

I do not understand how the oil pressure regulating valve works- I read in one SSP of a similar engine that it might increase oil pressure at higher engine speeds i.e. above about 2500. From my rudimentary testing it appears this may not be increasing oil pressure fast enough or sufficiently close to 2500 rpm, or it is allowing oil pressure to momentarily drop which triggers the oil pressure warning.

It could also simply be that the oil pump is failing...

Any advice on the advanced MVB's and what they pertain to from my image above would be much appreciated.

Any advice on the exact function of the N428 in the context of this CCWA engine and how I might test it would also be much appreciated. Even if I replace the N428, I would still like to ascertain it is working properly or in a different way to what I can see at present.

    thanks

Here is the current flow diagram showing where the N428 connects:

That makes sense. Oil b Pressure Switch High Pressure. Oil thins out as it heats up and pressure drops as consequence.

That sure looks like "Oil Pressure Switch Valve Control" to me. At what RPM, or under what conditions does it change?

    Or even a clogged screen.

Another random thought: Does the oil pump system in this vehicle also have an excess pressure relief valve? One of our cars with a totally different engine, there was some mechanical damage to one of the chain sprockets, resulting in some some FOD getting stuck in that valve, keeping it from closing all the way, resulting in low oil pressure.

Have you actually checked oil pressure using a gauge? At this point, I think that would be the next step, to get a real feel for what's going on when, before you replace more parts.

Change the other oil PSI sensors after verifying mechanicals are correct!

    Dynamic oil PSI cross check!

If persists still, change engine ecu after verifying the harness integrity.
