Horsefeathers. There's only so much efficiency to be had in heat engine, and practical engines are limited in how close they can get to the theoretical (Carnot) efficiency limit by other pollution regulations, specifically those limiting NOx production.

Yes, car makers could produce cars that had a fleet average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, but they know damn well that very few people would want to buy the shitboxes they'd have to produce in order to achieve that.

"Gas" = methane (i.e. natural gas).

And..

The GasOn project has not yet dealt with the exhaust gas treatment of such an engine; there is still need for further research, due to the lean combustion process.

Lean = lots of NOx, just like a diesel.
